‘We all have emotions’ – Bellerin offers Xhaka support after Arsenal captain tells fans to ‘f*ck off’

0

The Spanish right-back has taken to social media following his skipper’s clash with Gunners supporters in their game against Crystal Palace

Arsenal defender Hector Bellerin has posted a message of support for team-mate Granit Xhaka after the captain told fans to ‘f*ck off’ during the Gunners’ 2-2 draw with Crystal Palace at the Emirates.

Unai Emery’s side raced into a 2-0 lead inside the opening 10 minutes after centre-backs Sokratis and David Luiz scored following corner kicks, but Arsenal allowed their opponents back into the contest.

VAR ruled that Calum Chambers had fouled Wilfried Zaha in the box and Luka Milivojevic duly converted the penalty, before Jordan Ayew restored parity with over half an hour left to play.

Following Palace’s equaliser, Emery substituted Xhaka for young winger Bukayo Saka, a decision met with cheers by the home faithful.

Xhaka, recently named Arsenal captain by Emery, appeared to take the fans’ reaction to his substitution poorly and walked off the field slowly, prompting boos from the Gunners support.

The midfielder then cupped his ear to the crowd and swore at them as he reached the sidelines, before ripping his shirt off and dropping it as he went straight down the tunnel, further inciting the crowd.

“[Xhaka] is wrong,” Emery said in his post-match interview.

“He is wrong, but we are going to speak [internally] about that situation. I want to listen to him and also to be calm, but, really, he was wrong in this action.”

Right-back Bellerin has since posted a message of support for his team-mate on social media that reads: “We are all humans, we all have emotions, and sometimes it’s not easy dealing with them. It’s time to lift each other up, not to push each other away. We only win when we are together.”

It remains to be seen if Emery will strip Xhaka of the captaincy following the incident, but if he does, Bellerin will be among the names to replace him.

The Spaniard is one of Emery’s ‘five captains’, alongside Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Alexandre Lacazette and Mesut Ozil, although Xhaka was chosen as the main captain of the five.

Ozil is in the process of being frozen out by Emery, having played just twice this season, which leaves Bellerin, Aubameyang and Lacazette as the leading contenders to take the armband.

Court of Appeal reserves judgement on Ekweremadu’s election

0

The Court of Appeal, Enugu Division on Monday reserved judgment in a case filed by Mrs Juliet Ibekaku-Nwagwu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) against Sen. Ike Ekweremadu.

Ibekaku-Nwagwu is challenging the declaration of Ekweremadu of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as the winner of the Feb. 23 Senatorial election for Enugu West.

The National and State House of Assembly Elections Petitions Tribunal in Enugu had in its judgment on Sept. 9, 2019 affirmed Ekweremadu as duly elected.

At the resumed hearing, counsel to the appellants, Mr Henry Bello, said that the notice of appeal contained 17 grounds of appeal.

Bello said that the appellants also formulated eight issues for determination in the appeal.

He said that the crux of the appeal was based on non-compliance to the Electoral Act by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in declaring the first respondent as the winner of the poll.

The counsel said that the election was conducted on Feb. 23, 2019, adding that collation started on the same day and had continued until Feb. 24.

He however, said that while the collation of the Enugu West Senatorial election was still going on, the third respondents announced the result in defiance of the provisions of the electoral act.

On a preliminary objection brought by Mr Anthony Ani (SAN), counsel to the second respondent, the PDP, Bello urged the court to strike it out for being academic and lacking in merit.

“We adopt our replies to the preliminary objection and the three briefs of the appellants in argument of this appeal and urge the court to allow the appeal set aside the judgment of the tribunal,” Bello said.

News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Ani had earlier drew the attention of the court to a House of Representatives appeal which he said was reserved for judgement.

The SAN said that the case with appeal number CA/ E/ EAPP/ 15/2019, which affected three out of five local government areas involved in the instant case had similar issues.

Ani said that they filed a preliminary objection on the current case which they incorporated at page three of their brief.

“The appeal is incompetent and a mere academic exercise. We urge the court to strike out the affected paragraphs and the appeal and affirm the decision of the tribunal,” Ani said.

Counsels to the first and third respondents, Chief Justina Offiah (SAN) and Mr Emeka Udeogba respectively after adopting their briefs, urged the court to dismiss the appeal and affirm the decision of the tribunal.

Thereafter, the Chairman of the panel, Justice I. M. Saluwa reserved judgment on the matter on a date that would be communicated to the parties. (NAN)

FG to Introduce Three New Types of Visa

0

The Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) has said it will soon introduce various categories of visas for the country as part of its visa reform.
The Comptroller General of Immigration (CGI), Mohammad Babandede, disclosed this in an interview with News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Benin, Edo State.

Babandede said that the visa categories being considered were visa for tourists, visa for retirees outside the country who wish to retire in Nigeria and visa for incentive/investors.
According to him, “If you have money, genuine money, we are encouraging visitors who have intellectual capacity to assist in building capacity in Nigeria.
“If the visa is not going to break national security, good economy, we would encourage it to be delivered in a transparent way to cut corruption. “We will ensure that Nigerians realise that there is reform based on the anti-corruption strategy of Mr President.”
He told NAN that the 2019 Comptroller General of Immigration annual conference did a lot of group work towards achieving the various reforms in the Service within the shortest possible time.

He added that there were some quick wins that could be done immediately, noting that one of such was in the area of passport.
“As a quick win, we promised to make the prices of passport available to the public to see and read the price and pay for it.
“One of the quick wins we have done is to standardise the operations of the passport, we want Nigerians to know the process of getting passport and visa on the passport.
“So its not just the reforms, but what is in the reforms is for greater service delivery.
“The important thing is that in each reform we do, we consider national security,” he said.
Babandede said that the current “Operation Swift Response” under the supervision of the office of the National Security Adviser was intended to tackle border insecurity.

He said that the present borders’ closure has helped Nigeria to curtail not just the people who enter, but also Nigerians who take the bush paths to travel without passports.
He disclosed that a month ago, the NIS records showed that not fewer than 11,000 persons have been prevented from travelling out through illegal means.
The CGI added that the service also deported persons who were not supposed to be in the country.

Similarly the Comptroller, NIS, Edo command,  Kayode Eniolorunda, said that the CGI conference was the most important event in the calendar of the service.
Eniolorunda said that this was because far reaching decisions and reform strategies were usually conceived and adopted during the conference.
He said that the state command’s hosting of the 2019 conference was in view of the theme which has to do with migration management and the role of NIS.

He noted that irregular migration like human trafficking and smuggling in persons thrive and was very rampant in the state.

He, however, said that e-registration would commence in the state before the end of the year as equipment and facilities needed were already on the ground.

News EFCC arraigns developer over Maitama alleged property fraud

0

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has arraigned Joseph Idakho alongside his company, Zamtrac Management and City Investment Limited
for alleged conspiracy, forgery and criminal breach of trust.

The duo were made to appear before Justice D. Z. Senchi of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, High Court, Jabi, Abuja.

He allegedly defrauded one Hajiya Halima Babangida in a real estate development transaction that went awry.

EFCC spokesman, Wilson Uwujaren said this in a statement in Abuja.

Uwujaren explained, “Babangida alleged in a petition to the EFCC that she entered into an agreement with the defendant’s company for development of six units of detached houses of five bedrooms each, including boys quarters, at Plot, 2398 AO6, Cadastral Zone, Maitama District, Abuja, with her contribution being the land, while the defendant was to bear another cost of development.

“She claims that they had agreed to share the property equally at the end of development but discovered, to her chagrin, that the defendant commenced sale of the property even before completion without her knowledge or approval.

“Irked by this development, she allegedly probed further and discovered that Idakwo and one Aliyu Dasuki conspired and forged her signature on the documents which they used in selling the houses”.

Count one of the five-count charges read: “That you, Joseph Idakwo and Zamtrac Management and City Investment Ltd sometime in October 2017 in Abuja within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court entrusted with dominion over the landed property at Plot 2398 A06 Cadastral Zone Maitama District, Abuja committed criminal breach of trust in respect of the said property when you sold part of the property to Suleiman Mohammad Chiroma in violation of paragraph 3.2.6 of the Property Development Agreement made on 20th January, 2017 between Hajiya Halima Babangida and Zamtrac Management and City Investment Ltd and you thereby committed an offence contrary to, and punishable under Section 312 of the Penal Code Law”.

But after the charges were read, the defendant reportedly pleaded not guilty to all the charges.

The prosecuting counsel, Offem I. Uket, asked for a trial date and prayed the court to remand the defendant in Nigerian Correctional Service custody, pending the commencement of trial.

However, the defence counsel, J. A. Atanawhemera, moved an oral bail application for his client.

In his ruling, Justice Senchi granted the defendant bail in the sum of N1, 000,000 with two sureties, who must have landed properties in Abuja, with Certificate of Occupancy.

He also ordered that the sureties must be residents of Abuja, and adjourned the matter to January 16, 2020 for trial.

US officials carpet Donald Trump, say withdrawal of troops from Syria complicated operation that led to killing of ISIS leader al-Baghdadi

0

President Donald Trump has been accused of complicating the operation that led to the killing of World’s Most Wanted Terrorist and Islamic State leader, Mr. al-Baghdadi following his abrupt decision to pull forces from northern Syria.

The US President was also accused of knowing that the Central Intelligence Agency and Special Operations commandos were zeroing in on the location for Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, the Islamic State leader as he was kept apprised of the hunt for months.

New York Times reported that Security officials said Trump’s abrupt withdrawal order three weeks ago disrupted the meticulous planning underway and forced Pentagon officials to speed up the plan for the risky night raid before their ability to control troops, spies and reconnaissance aircraft disappeared with the pullout.

Two US officials also disclosed that the information about the Islamic State leader, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi’s general location which is in a village deep inside a part of northwestern Syria controlled by rival Qaida group, came following the arrest and interrogation of one of al-Baghdadi’s wives and a courier this past summer.

The CIA worked closely with Iraqi and Kurdish intelligence officials in Iraq and Syria to identify al-Baghdadi’s more precise whereabouts and put spies in place to monitor his periodic movements, allowing U.S. commandos to stage Saturday’s assault in which President Donald Trump said al-Baghdadi died.

FG earns N52.7bn from solid minerals in one year

0

The solid minerals sector contributed N52.75bn to the revenue of the federation in 2017, a 21 per cent increase on the N43.22bn contributed by the sector in 2016, the latest report on the industry released by the Nigeria Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative on Sunday stated.

According to the report, the information and data followed an independent reconciliation of company payments and government receipts in the sector as carried out by NEITI.

From the sector’s total revenue contribution of N52.75bn, payments to the Federal Inland Revenue Service accounted for N49.162bn, which was about 93 per cent of the total revenue realised during the period under review.

Payments to the Mines Inspectorate Department, and Mining Cadastre Office amounted to N1.59bn and N2.08bn or about three and four per cent respectively of the total revenue from the sector.

NEITI, however, stated that except for revenue from MID, there was significant increase in revenue from all other streams in 2017.

It said, “A trend analysis of the revenue flows showed that there has been a very remarkable increase in revenue accruing to the federation from the solid minerals sector from 2013 to 2017, though 2016 witnessed a decrease of 31.02 per cent compared to 2015.”

Other revenue flows from the solid minerals sector include sub-national payments. These are direct payments to states and local governments as a result of national laws, contractual obligations or local regulations which are disclosed as unilateral disclosures by the extractive companies.

“The total payment was N2.877bn, representing about 5.45 per cent of total government revenue from the sector,” NEITI stated.

On production, the report disclosed that 35.33 million metric tonnes of minerals valued at N32.78bn was produced in Nigeria during the same period.

It stated that the production data was based on minerals either used or sold during the year.

A breakdown of the production showed that Limestone, Granite and Laterite accounted for 85.72 per cent of the total minerals produced with Limestone alone contributing about 55 per cent of the production volumes.
