– According to the presidency, frequent overseas travels made by President Buhari, Shehu said given the president has outdone all of his predecessors put together Nigeria’s presidency on Monday, November 4, said that former president always asked for tips and kickbacks before awarding contracts to different contractors.

The senior special assistant to President Muhammadu Buhari on media and publicity, Garba Shehu, said President Buhari in his tenure has abolished the old days when kickbacks and tips superseded any major contract within the country.

Also reacting to frequent overseas travels made by President Buhari, Shehu said given the president has outdone all of his predecessors put together.

He also noted that with the emergence and internet speed and technology, any leader can function from any part of the world.

He said: “For one thing, President Buhari’s travels have not been excessive by the standards of this country’s past leaders and those of his counterparts in other countries. Given advances in modern travel and technology, a leader can maintain communication and govern from the air, on the road or at sea.”

“Given the advances made with satellite feeds, a leader needs not to be tied to his desk to make important decisions,” Shehu said.

He added that the days of frequent travels by leaders is the new norm as it is not something that will go away irrespective of the number or level of criticism dished out by the opposition.

Senate confirms Justice Tosho as CJ Federal High Court and justice Kanyip as the president of national industrial court

The Senate on Tuesday confirmed the nomination of Justice John Tosho as the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court.
The Upper Chamber also approved the appointment of Honourable Justice Benedict Bakwaph Kanyip as the President of the National Industrial Court (NIC) of Nigeria.

These resolutions of the Red Chamber followed the presentation of the report on the screening of the nominees by the Chairman, Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele on the floor.
Senator Bamidele recommended the two Justices to the Senate for confirmation “having screened the nominees and being satisfied with their exposure, experience, performance, qualifications and competence.”

The Senate unanimously approved the confirmation of the nominees when put to voice vote by the Senate President Ahmad Lawan.

Lawan in his remarks said the National Assembly will work with the executive to ensure a conducive working environment for the nation’s judiciary.
Lawan said: “The judiciary in Nigeria is supposed to be a very active one. We need to also have better capacity for the judiciary.

“They have so many cases to handle and they are overwhelmed. I think this National Assembly should work together with the executive to create a better working environment and of course to create a situation where they would have more hands so that they are able to deal with the numerous cases that we always go to the judiciary for.

“But at the moment, I think they are overworked, they are overwhelmed and they need our support.
“We need to look for more resources to ensure that our judiciary is properly oiled to function,” Lawan said.

JUST IN: Nigerian govt withdraws corruption charges against Pinnick, other NFF officials

0

The Federal High Court, Abuja Division, on Tuesday, struck out the case of fraud brought against the President of the Nigerian Football Federation, Amaju Pinnick.

The court made the decision following an application by the federal government to withdraw its case against Mr Pinnick and others accused of mismanaging money gotten from the Federation of International Football Association (FIFA).

The federal government had in May arraigned Mr Pinnik and four others on 18 counts for allegedly diverting the sum, which was given to the NFF as fees for appearing at the last Russia 2018 World Cup.
The five officials, including the NFF Secretary, Sunusi Mohammed; the 1st Vice-President, Seyi Akinwumi; the 2nd Vice-President, Shehu Dikko and an Executive member, Yusuff Fresh, were accused of misappropriating N4 billion without the approval of the NFF.

They were also alleged to have contravened the law by failing to declare their assets.
They were arraigned by the Special Presidential Investigation Panel for the Recovery of Public Property (SPIP).
The panel, then led by Okoi Obono-Obla, has since been dissolved by President Muhammadu Buhari. Mr Obono-Obla is himself wanted for allegedly forging a WAEC certificate.

“The prosecution withdrew the charges against the defendants. And so we asked that the case be withdrawn. The court invoked section 355 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act to withdraw the charges,” a lawyer representing the NFF officials, Mohammed Katu, said on Tuesday.

The section quoted empowers the prosecution to withdraw its charges against the defendant where necessary.
This trial is, however, separate from that being conducted by the anti-graft agency, EFCC, against Mr Pinnick and others.

However serving an update on same platform, the US Politician said he got to know the baby isn’t his after paying for the baby shower and sending out invites. Fred Green admitted that he is hurt and prays he heals with time.

He wrote “On April 25, 2019 The girl I was dating told me I was going to be a Father. I was nervous and scared at the same time, we wasn’t sure what we was going to do. In all honesty either of us wasn’t ready for a baby. However, we decided to accept the fact that we were both grown enough to make the baby so we have to take responsibility and we decided to have the baby.

I’ve been to every doctors appointment, I’ve heard the baby’s first heart beat, I was there for the ultrasound and it really excited me. I couldn’t wait, I was overwhelmed with joy to be having my first child. On August 15th we found out it was going to be a boy! I couldn’t believe I got a boy on the first round.

I told my family and friends, 2 of my good friends and business partners immediately agreed to pay for the baby shower and started planning it right away. As of today everything has been ordered, delivered, and paid for. I announced to the world I was going to be a daddy and the love and support hasn’t stopped. I’m so thankful to have so many people excited and happy for me.

I sent out over 200 invitations, went to the store with my childs mother to be and did 3 different registries, got everything done and was all set for the baby shower to take place. I rearranged my house and began to prepare my life around a new baby. Here I am, excited, ready and can’t wait for my son LeAngelo to enter the world. I’ve been to every doctors appointment, planned a whole baby shower, told thousands of people I’m expecting my first child, and supported her through her whole pregnancy. Fast forward to October 25, 2019 at 10:27am she text me and said, the BABY IS NOT MINE!!!

I’ve never been so hurt in my life, at that very moment it felt like I was shot 10 times in the heart. I couldn’t believe what I had just read through a text message. I’m hurting because I really was looking forward to being a father, I began to change my whole life around in anticipation of a new baby. Time heals all wounds and this too shall past. I’ve received a number of gifts and I know people have already purchased gifts off of my registry. I’m sorry to inform you that the baby shower is canceled and I’m not having a baby”

Oscar disqualifies Nigeria’s Lionheart film

0

Nigerian film director and actor Genevieve Nnaji has protested against the disqualification of her film, Lionheart, from Oscar’s Best International Feature Film category.

The Academy dropped the Nigerian comedy “for having too much dialogue in English”, which violates its rule that requires entries in the international category to have “a predominantly non-English dialogue track.”
Lionheart, which is Nigeria’s first-ever submission to the Oscar, is largely in English, with an 11-minute section in the Igbo language.

The film, which has earned strong reviews and is currently streaming on Netflix, had been scheduled to screen for Academy voters in the international category on Wednesday.
Its disqualification was announced to voters in an email on Monday, according to The Wrap website.

It was one of the unprecedented 29 films out of 93 originally submitted this year that were directed by women.

The Director Genevieve Nnaji, who also stars in the film, protested against the disqualification on Twitter saying the film “represents the way we speak like Nigerians.”

She added that; “This includes English which acts as a bridge between the 500+ languages spoken in our country. We did not choose who colonized us. As ever, this film and many like it is proudly Nigerian.”

Top Hollywood director Ava DuVernay tweeted in support of Lionheart asking if the disqualification meant “barring” Nigeria from ever competing for an Oscar:

News Fani-Kayode ‘calls out’ Osinbajo as Abba Kyari takes Bill to Buhari in London

0

Femi Fani-Kayode, a former Minister of Aviation and a PDP chieftain, has joined many Nigerians in criticizing President Muhammadu Buhari government over the recent signing of the amended Deep Offshore Act in London.

Buhari signed the bill on Monday in London, stating that the amended Bill will generate at least $500m additional revenue for the Nigerian government.

The Chief of Staff to the President, Malam Abba Kyari, was with him when he signed the Act.
This did not go down well with some Nigerians, as they posed questions about the function of the office of Vice President, Osinbajo.

According to them, Osinbajo should have signed the bill, rather than have Abba Kyari take a trip to London.
Fani-Kayode, speaking on the development queried Osinbajo for his loyalty to Buhari despite being ‘sidelined’
He wondered why Buhari cannot handover to Osinbajo whenever he is not in the country.

On his Twitter page, Fani-Kayode wrote: “How do you describe a VP that insists on remaining in office after his boss refuses to hand over power to him when he goes on leave and instead gets his Chief of Staff to fly over to London to sign legislative bills into law?
“If your boss can’t trust you, why are you still there?

NDDC crisis: Why I’m being attacked – Buhari’s Minister, Senator Akpabio

0

The Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Senator Godswill Akpabio, has said that those who are opposed to the forensic audit of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) are behind the attacks against him.

According to him, the same people are also behind spurious allegations being made against him.

Akpabio, according to the Nation, said that instead of taking up issues with those behind the attacks, he would remain focused to deliver on the mandate given him by President Muhammadu Buhari, “who ordered the forensic audit”
The former lawmaker assured the people of Niger Delta that President Buhari would make a huge impact on the region in the next four years and urged them to continue to support the current administration.

The former Akwa Ibom State Governor pointed out that he had always carried out any assignment given him with seriousness, adding that this will not be different and recalled his strides in Akwa Ibom state as governor where he transformed infrastructure.

The Minister denied the insinuation that he collected money from the former Managing Director of NDDC Nsima Ekere or any other individual for that matter.

He described the allegation as “spurious and part of the conspiracy of those who have been milking the resources meant for the development of the Niger Delta for the past 19 years.”

He said it is part of their effort to frustrate the forensic audit of NDDC accounts.

Akpabio described the attacks against him “as a case of corruption fighting back because they have not thought that a forensic audit of the accounts of the commission could ever be ordered.”
