NIPR Urges PR Practitioners to Place Reputation Over Visibility

0

… As Institute Welcomes 421 New Members

The Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR) has urged public relations practitioners to prioritise reputation which it described as a capital asset over visibility, warning that virality without context becomes a weak asset.

These were the words of the President, Chairman of Council of the Institute, Dr. Ike Neliaku on Thursday when he formally inducted 421 new members into the body in Abuja. “In today’s media environment, visibility is not victory. You can be visible everywhere, but you are not victorious in your context. Eloquence without credibility is a fragile asset”, he stated.

Dr. Neliaku who spoke in reference to a recent Al Jazeera interview by the Special Adviser to the President on Policy Communication, Daniel Bwala, emphasised that while procedures, processes and structures of doing things must be followed, he insisted that those who speak for Nigeria must also wear the badge of reputation ambassadors.

While arguing that the strategic management of Nigeria’s reputation requires a strong character of credibility, he said that irrespective of how strong a message could be, it can be corrupt and undermined by a weak messenger, which could affect the expected outcome. “Credibility goes before content. It is who you are that will speak for you even before you come into the room. That is why we talk about reputation”, he noted.

The NIPR boss therefore called on the new members of the Institute to build a credibility that stands the test of time, noting that credibility overcomes charisma.

In his goodwill message, the Secretary General of African Public Relations Association (APRA), Dr. Omoniyi Ibietan told the new inductees that every behaviour is a communicative action subject to any interpretation, urging them to be cautious of their conducts.

Delivering his induction orientation lecture, a Member of NIPR Governing Council, Comrade Ini Ememobong called on the new members of the Institute to adopt creative means to contribute meaningfully in the leadership process in their respective organisations as against being mere announcers of management decisions.

NDDC Trains 500 Niger Delta Youths On CNG Autogas Conversion

0

A total of 500 youths from the nine states of the Niger Delta region have graduated after a six-week training programme on Compressed Natural Gas, CNG, Autogas Conversion, sponsored by the Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC.

Speaking during the graduation ceremony at the Dakkada Skills Acquisition Centre in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, the NDDC Managing Director, Dr Samuel Ogbuku, stated that CNG was a cleaner, safer, and more cost-effective alternative to conventional fuel.

He declared, “We want to make the Niger Delta the hub of engine conversion, which can also be outsourced to other parts of Nigeria. We are taking that bold initiative that will engage most of our youths.”

“We understand the challenges facing our youth, such as unemployment, limited access to skills training and economic uncertainty. The NDDC remains committed to turning those challenges into opportunities,” he said.

The NDDC boss noted that implementing the CNG policy would create jobs and enable local technology transfer for youths and women by supporting auto manufacturing, retrofitting, conversions and production infrastructure.

He said further: “The more we train our youths in energy conversion facilities, the more youths we train to make them gainfully employed and financially independent. We want to make the Niger Delta the hub of CNG technicians in the country.”

Ogbuku recalled that the Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative, PCNGI, and the NDDC had signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to facilitate the implementation of the CNG policy in the Niger Delta region.

In his goodwill message, the Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, commended the NDDC for keying into the CNG initiative, noting that his state was also working on the programme.

The Governor, represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Prince Enobong Uwah, observed that the CNG initiative would help transform the Niger Delta region.

He remarked that the Niger Delta had long been the backbone of Nigeria’s energy economy, noting that the future of energy was evolving. The global shift toward cleaner and more sustainable energy solutions presents new opportunities.

Also speaking, the NDDC Executive Director, Projects, Dr Victor Antai, noted that the Commission was created with a vision to facilitate the rapid, sustainable development of the region into an economically prosperous, socially stable, ecologically regenerative and politically peaceful area.

According to him, the training, which was organised in two batches of three weeks each, was designed to equip participants with practical skills in CNG vehicle conversion, system maintenance, and safety standards, in line with global best practices.

Antai highlighted some of the benefits of the CNG initiative, including the development of a more reliable and sustainable transportation sector, which would directly stimulate economic growth through job creation and increased demand for autogas specialists, thereby further reducing harmful emissions in line with NDDC’s commitment to environmental conservation and sustainability.

In his own remarks, the NDDC Executive Director, Corporate Services, Hon Ifedayo Abegunde, said the Presidential Initiative on CNG fully manifested President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s vision of leveraging Nigeria’s gas resources.

He noted that the CNG Initiative was a component of the Federal Government’s intervention to provide succour to Nigerians.

From his perspective, the Managing Director of the Nigerian Education Loan Fund, NELFUND, Mr Akintunde Sawyerr, commended the NDDC for its forward-looking approach and alignment with the Federal Government’s vision for clean energy. He described the initiative as futuristic and praised the Commission for advancing the CNG agenda in the Niger Delta region.

Speaking in the same vein, the Technical Assistant, Presidential CNG Initiative, Omoh Imuokhuede, stated that the Presidential initiative on Compressed Natural Gas and Electric vehicles is a flagship programme of the Federal Government of Nigeria, launched in 2023 under the Renewed Hope Agenda.

The Training Consultant, Mr Tunde Rena, highlighted the gains from embracing CNG, noting that the initiative would stimulate investment in Nigeria’s abundant gas market, develop sustainable local gas markets, and grow the economy while expanding the government’s revenue base.

He observed that as Nigeria expands the adoption of CNG-powered vehicles, there is a growing demand for skilled professionals who can convert petrol and diesel vehicles to CNG, maintain systems, and manage related technologies. This is where the CNG Conversion Training Programme becomes critical.

The NDDC Director of Commercial and Industrial Development, Mrs Lyna Okara, affirmed that the CNG training was in line with the NDDC’s mandate to build human capacity and enhance Skills Development in the Niger Delta Region.

Nigeria: NAFDAC Sounds Alarm Over Fake Cancer Drug

0

By Ebi Kesiena

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has warned Nigerians about a counterfeit breast cancer drug, Phesgo 600mg, circulating in the country.

The fake drug, with batch numbers B2346B16 and C3809C5, poses serious health risks as it doesn’t meet safety and quality standards.Investigations revealed the counterfeit product has incorrect packaging, wrong batch numbers, and fake barcodes.

NAFDAC advises Nigerians to source medical products from licensed suppliers and verify authenticity before use.

Phesgo 600mg is a medicine used in the treatment of breast cancer. It works by killing cancer cells and slowing down their growth.

Roche, the legitimate manufacturer of Phesgo, stated that only pictures of the samples were made available for investigation, as physical samples were not provided. Despite this limitation, the images were carefully examined and compared with genuine retained samples.

The company identified several differences that confirmed the products were falsified, including a batch number that does not exist in its database, incorrect text, wrong variable data, and a Global Trade Item Number (GTIN) barcode that does not match any genuine product.

It also noted the absence of a tamper-evident label and visible differences in packaging when compared to the original product. Chemical testing could not be carried out because the physical samples were not submitted for analysis.

“Only pictures of the complaint samples were sent to Roche by the complainants for investigation. Although a complete investigation was not possible, the pictures provided were scrutinised by Roche and compared to genuine retained samples. The investigation identified the following significant differences between the complaint sample pictures and the genuine materials, which confirmed the falsified status of the suspected counterfeit batches.” NAFDAC said

NAFDAC warned that the illegal production and distribution of counterfeit medicines pose a major threat to public health, as such products do not meet the required standards of safety, quality, and effectiveness.

”The illegal marketing and distribution of counterfeit medicines risks people’s health, as they do not guarantee the safety, quality, and efficacy of the products due to non-compliance with regulatory standards,” NAFDAC stated

Details of the suspected counterfeit products show inconsistencies in manufacturing information, with the stated production site not clearly identified in the images reviewed. The genuine product, however, is manufactured by F. Hoffmann-La Roche Limited in Kaiseraugst, Switzerland.

In response, NAFDAC has directed all zonal directors and state coordinators to intensify surveillance and remove the counterfeit products from circulation across the country.

Importers, distributors, healthcare providers, and caregivers have been advised to remain cautious within the supply chain and avoid dealing in unverified products. The agency stressed that all medical products should be sourced only from licensed and authorised suppliers, while their authenticity and physical condition must be carefully checked before use.

“All medical products must be obtained from authorized/licensed suppliers. The products’ authenticity and physical condition should be carefully checked.” NAFDAC stressed

Healthcare professionals and members of the public are also encouraged to report any suspected sale of fake or substandard medicines to the nearest NAFDAC office. Reports can also be made via the agency’s toll-free line, email, or official reporting platforms.

Similarly, patients and healthcare workers are urged to report any adverse reactions or side effects linked to the use of medical products.
