Why we Choose to Reopen schools – Oyetola’s SA on Education

0

Governor Gboyega Oyetola’s Special Adviser on Education, Jamiu Olawumi on Wednesday revealed that the state government could reopen schools any time soon.

Jamiu disclosed this after a virtual meeting by the Development Agenda for Western Nigeria known as the DAWN Commission, in collaboration with the forum of South-West Education Commissioners, Special Advisers on Education and the State Universal Basic Education Board.

He said the meeting was convened following realisation that the COVID-19 pandemic might not go anytime soon.

It’s was reported that Six South-West states are ready to reopen schools for students, to sit for the 2020 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).

“We have been doing our job. On Monday the Federal Ministry of Information sent us guidelines for reopening of schools. we’ve fulfilled it; even without anybody prompting us. Osun is up to the task.” Jamiu said

According to him, the Osun State submission at the meeting was gathered through information and was data-driven.

He said that the state ministry of education is awaiting the Governor’s approval to give a date on resumption.

“We are pulling together all the stakeholders within the education sector, to let them understand our policy on reopening of schools, and as soon, we collate our papers, we shall present to the governor for approval.

“We want to assure the people of the state that the Governor will not act outside what is in their best interest. So, we have done our due diligence, and before now, we have been teaching our students – within the syllabus and they are ready to write the exam any day.

“So the issue of the day of reopening is not the issue, but the issue is when are we going to reopen – which I know the Governor will accommodate other interests including WAEC, NECO and all other examination bodies.

“Osun is up to the task. We have realised here that COVID-19 is a pandemic that will not go in a hurry. Hence, we have been doing our job.

“We have three exams around the corner, WAEC and BECE JSS3 which is an internal examination that only the government of the state can organise and conduct and the Primary 6 examination. All these are examinations conducted by the state ministry of Education. He added.

JUDGMENT: Court Sets Aside Judgment on Restraining State Government from Sacking ALGON Chairmen

0

The Court of Appeal has set aside the judgment of Oyo State High Court which restrained the state government from sacking the All Progressives Congress, APC, Association of Local Government of NigeriaALGON, chairmen.

The Court based its judgment on the fact that the High Court judgment was based on speculation which could not be taken for the cause of action.

The judgment read by Justice Haruna Tsammani said the case was premature with no facts to establish the intention of the state government.

Counsel to ALGON, Niyi Akintola SAN, also said his client will determine whether the matter will go to the Supreme Court or not.

Recall that the sacked Council Chairmen under the aegis of the ALGON dragged the Seyi Makinde-led administration to court and sought to take control of the council secretariats by relying on a letter written by the Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami (SAN), and another by the Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Adamu.

[JUST IN]: Federal High Court Discharges Order of Forfeiture Against Saraki’s Property

0

A Federal High Court sitting in Lagos has Discharged the Order of Interim  Forfeiture Against Senator Olubukola Saraki’s Ilorin Retirement Property.

The Court also Dismissed the application filed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for Final Forfeiture of the  Said Property.

Recall that the EFCC through its counsel Rotimi Oyedepo Esq. had filed an application in Suit No. FHC/L/CS/2163/2019 for the forfeiture of Senator Saraki’s property at Plots 10 and 11 Abdulkadir Road GRA Ilorin.

EFCC contended that the property was acquired illegally with funds belonging to Kwara State.

Senator Saraki through his counsel Kehinde Ogunwumiju SAN raised a preliminary objection to the forfeiture action and filed a substantive opposition to it. Arguments were taken on the 27th February 2020.

In delivering the ruling of the Court today 16th July 2020, Hon. Justice Aikawa of the Lagos Judicial Division of the Federal High Court while dismissing Senator Saraki’s objection held that the Court had jurisdiction to entertain the case.

His Lordship further held that the evidence before the Court was to the effect that the property was substantially financed with money paid to the ex-governor in line with the Kwara State Governor and Deputy Governor Payment of Pension Law which provides that a two term governor is entitled to a house within the state upon completion of his second tenure.

His Lordship further held that the contention of EFCC that the property was acquired by illegal funds was based on mere suspicion and therefore the Court could not proceed to order final forfeiture of the property since EFCC had an obligation to prove its case on the preponderance of evidence.

Consequently, the Court discharged the interim order for forfeiture it had earlier granted in favour of the EFCC on 2nd December 2019 and then dismissed the substantive application for final forfeiture.

We’ll Give Bandits Two Cows In Exchange For One Rifle – Zamfara Gov

0

Bello Matawalle, governor of Zamfara State, has said the state will give bandits two cows for every rifle they surrender.

Matawalle made the announcement when he hosted the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Mohammed Adamu; Director General, Department of State Security Services (DSS), Yusuf Bichi, and other heads of Intelligence Units of military and police.

The governor said his government does not want to give money to the bandits, so that they will not buy new weapons.

He disclosed that the state government has informed repentant bandits to disband all their camps in the forest.

“For every rifle submitted by a repentant bandit, there would be compensation of two cows,” he said.

“We don’t want to give them money, so they wouldn’t use the money to purchase new weapons.

“We said we will compensate them with cows, they are Fulani and they need the cows to advance their economic interest.

“We also told the repentant bandits that all “Dabas” (Camps) in the forests should be disbanded. We won’t accept a situation where the bandits will disarm and then go back to the forest and be staying in these camps or Dabas .

“We asked them to either come to town and be reintegrated into the society or be given economic empowerment where they are, so that they would start a new life.

“Most of them are residing in forests under the shades of trees and inside caves. That is why we came up with RUGA policy to help them.”

The governor, who described the state as the epicentre of armed banditry in the country, stated that the whole North-west and the country in general will be safe, if security operatives can deal with the menace.

I’m Safe With Wike At Government House — Ex-NDDC MD

0

Joy Nunieh, the immediate past acting Managing Director of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), has said she is safe with Nyesom Wike, Governor of Rivers State, at Government House in Port Harcourt, the state capital.

Nunieh stated this at the Government House while narrating her ordeal after police operatives laid siege to her Port Harcourt residence on Thursday.

Governor Wike had rescued Nunieh after he drove to her residence and ordered the police officers who had surrounded the building to vacate the area.

Nunieh explained that she called the governor and Senator Magnus Abe, a former federal lawmaker, to inform them about the invasion of her residence by policemen, noting that the operatives wanted to arrest her without an approved warrant.

She stated that the policemen tried breaking the security door to her residence before Governor Wike arrived and ordered them out of her premises.

She said: “Senator Magnus Abe called me after a while that the CP in Rivers did not really know about it and that the CP was going to reach me. The CP did reach me and said he was not aware of what was going on.”

“The CP asked that I send him my address and which I did and then I saw the cars come in. So, I asked if that was the CP, and they said no. Fortunately, I was just wise enough. I stayed by the door, and they wanted to drag me, so I just banged the door, so they can’t come in.”

“So, I now left the front door to call my governor to tell my governor that this is what has happened, and he said no, I should not go anywhere that he was on his way. They kept trying to pull down the door and then I asked them for a warrant of arrest and I said I can’t go anywhere without a warrant of arrest.”

“I needed to see the warrant. We are not in the Banana Republic. So, as they were still trying, my Governor came and sent them out that why would they come to arrest a woman like an armed robber that they should leave the compound.”

“The Governor then said I should enter the car with him. So, I am safely here with my governor in Government House, Port Harcourt.

“I really want to thank the Governor. I really don’t know what to say but my Governor is a man. He is a man. He didn’t just say it that nothing should happen to me, he came to my rescue. I want to say thank you to my Governor,”

Nunieh was to appear before a House of Representatives panel investigating allegations of corruption in the NDDC on Thursday.

The Senate panel is investigating alleged misappropriation of N40 billion by the interim management committee (IMC) of the NDDC.

The ex-NDDC MD said she was preparing to go to Abuja to give her submission to the House Committee on NDDC before the police invaded her house.

Police Siege At Ex-NDDC MD’s House, An Attempt To Abduct, Kill Her – Fani-Kayode

0

Femi Fani-Kayode, a Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain, has reacted to the siege by police at the house of Joy Nunieh, former managing director of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC).

Men in police uniform on Thursday, at about 4.00am, invaded the Port Harcourt residence of Nunieh, who was supposed to appear before the House of Representatives panel few hours later, regarding the ongoing probe into the alleged  financial misapproprition in the commission.

Reports say she was meant to connect a morning flight to Abuja from the Rivers State capital.

However, she could not leave her house, until the state governor, Nyesom Wike, arrived the scene to rescue her.

In a tweet on the saga, Fani-Kayode said the invasion of Nunieh’s residence by the police was an attempt to kidnap and possibly kill her.

The former aviation minister described the action of the police as illegal, saying the invasion was done without a warrant, and was not authorised by the Inspector General of Police.

He praised Wike for the role he played, in ensuring that the woman is safe.

He wrote: “Gov. Wike saved Joy Nunieh’s life today. The police raid on her house at 4.00am was illegal & was NOT backed by a warrant or authorised by the I-G. It was simply an attempt to abduct & possibly kill her. Wike arrived on the scene, broke the siege & saved her life. I commend him.”

Hospital Owner Arrested For Issuing Thousands Of Fake COVID-19 Test Results

0

A Bangladesh hospital owner has been arrested, after he was accused of issuing thousands of fake negative coronavirus test results to patients at his two health centres.

Mohammad Shahed, owner of Regent hospital in Dhaka, the country’s capital, was arrested on Wednesday, following a nine-day manhunt, over allegations he issued fake certificates to patients, that they are virus-free without even testing them.

Police say he was apprehended while trying to flee to India in a burqa.

The 42-year-old is one of more than a dozen people detained by authorities in connection with the scam.

A well-known doctor and her husband were also arrested by the police, and accused of issuing thousands of fake virus certificates at their Dhaka laboratory.

“He was arrested from the bank of a border river as he was trying to flee to India. He was wearing a burqa,” Rapid Action Battalion spokesman, Colonel Ashique Billah, told AFP.

“His hospitals carried out 10,500 coronavirus tests, out of which 4,200 were genuine and the rest, 6,300 test reports, were given without conducting tests.”

Shahed is also accused of charging for the certificates and COVID-19 treatments, despite agreeing with the government that his hospitals will provide free care.

His arrest comes one week after Italy suspended flights to Rome from Bangladesh, after several passengers arriving from Dhaka tested positive for the virus.

According to Shakirul Islam of migrant rights group, OKUP, some of those who tested positive in Italy were allegedly carrying negative coronavirus certificates from Bangladesh.

Bangladesh has reported over 193,000 cases, and 2,457 deaths from the disease so far.
