Pilgrims Arrive Makkah Ahead of Hajj

0

Pilgrims started arriving in Makkah this weekend as they prepare for a very special hajj this year.

The first group to arrive was flown in from Qassim province to Jeddah’s King Abdulaziz International Airport on Friday before being transferred to a hotel in Makkah.

They were followed by more arrivals from Madinah, Riyadh, Abha, Tabuk and Jizan on Saturday.

This year Hajj is like no other due to the global COVID-19 pandemic, which has forced Saudi govt to cut the number of pilgrims to only 1000 to curb the spread of the deadly virus.

In order to protect pilgrims, Saudi officials applied new measures including special spacing, temperature measurement, and using technical thermal cameras.

Khadija, a Bulgarian expatriate, was overcome with joy when she heard she would be performing hajj this year, Arab News reported.

“I didn’t expect they’d accept,” she said. “I’m sure this year’s Hajj will be an exceptional one in all respects.”

Abdullah Al-Kathiri, an Emirati and a recovered COVID-19 patient, postponed his hajj last year because it coincided with his marriage.

“I’ve heard from many who’ve performed the pilgrimage in past years that it was always a smooth process, even with the massive numbers,” he said.

“So you could imagine how it would be with the limited number of pilgrims this year. Surely it will be a great experience.”

Dr. Haifa Yousef Hamdoon, a Tunisian physician in Qassim, did not expect to have a chance in this year’s limited hajj.

“When I received confirmation of my request, I was overjoyed and couldn’t believe it,” she said.

Hajj 2020 will commence on Tuesday, 28th of July 2020 and will continue till Sunday, 2nd of August 2020; in the evening time.

NNPC Officials Stole 48 Million Barrels of Oil – Firm

0

An oil trading firm, Samano Sa De CV, has written a letter to the Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, Mele Kyari, demanding five per cent reward for exposing the diversion and theft of 48 million barrels of crude oil.

At the current price of global crude oil which is $43 per barrel, the stolen oil is expected to be worth $2.06bn by today’s standard.

The alleged theft took place in 2015.

The allegations are contained in a letter signed by lawyer, Gboyega Oyewole, on behalf of the whistleblower dated July 23, 2020.

The letter is titled, ‘Formal Request for the Payment of five per cent Whistleblower Compensation For Information Furnished In Respect of Crude Oil Stolen from the Federal Republic of Nigeria’.

In the letter, it was stated that the Group Managing Director of the NNPC, Mr Mele Kyari, the late Chief of Staff to President Buhari, Abba Kyari; and Mr Umar Mohammed were all informed of the stolen crude and were expected to take action.

A subsequent letter written to the President by the whistleblower, was, however, prevented from getting to him.

The whistleblower said in October 2015, the stolen crude was moved from China without the knowledge of President Buhari and sold illegally by some government and NNPC officials with the proceeds not remitted to the government’s coffers.

When the whistleblower pushed for the agreed five per cent cut of the sale of the crude for exposing the theft, its officials were harassed and issued death threats.

The letter read in part, “Sequel to this policy, our client, being a reputable and credible company, promptly brought to the knowledge of the Nigerian Government, information as to criminal activity involving the NNPC and the stolen product.

“This information was given to high ranking officials of the Nigerian government to wit; Mr Mele Kyari, the Managing Director of NNPC; Mr. Abba Kyari, the then Chief of Staff to the President; and Mr. Umar Mohammed.

“Consequently, it was agreed that an investigation into the stolen product should be made to ascertain the veracity of the information and garner more facts as to the fraudulent activities.

“It was also agreed that if the information is found credible, the perpetrators of the offence would be apprehended and that compensation due to our client for the information brought forward would be awarded.

“Further to the above stated discussions, our client through its Chief Executive Officer, Mr Jose Salaza Tinajero (its representative) wrote to President Muhammadu Buhari notifying him of the stolen products as advised by the high ranking officials.

“The said letter was delivered to Mr Umar Mohammed, who to the surprise of our client, failed to deliver it to the President.”

Attached to the letter were several documents including bank transfers, names of vessels and their captains to show that the stolen products had been illegally sold by some top government officials in connivance with the NNPC. The firm also attached chats between some of the principal players.

When contacted, NNPC’s Group General Manager, Group Public Affairs Division, Kennie Obateru, said the oil firm was aware of the accusation but would not respond now.

“We won’t respond to it now, but at the appropriate time we will make our position known to the public,” he said.

[Opinion]: Men Who Should Not Contest In Osun 2022 by AT Oderinu

0

The leadership of the kingdom of rats called a conference of rats, to seek lasting solution to the incessant harassment of her members by the bullies called cats.

A lot of their members had lost their lives to these crazy felines who seem sworn to deplete the kingdom of rats and possibly get them extinct. Something urgent had to be done, otherwise, the cats were going to succeed in their mission of exterminating all rats.

One brilliant rat rose in this conference and said, “I suggest we put a little bell around the neck of all cats around our kingdom, the sound of these bells will alert us when they make a move on us.” Brilliant suggestion, but faulty, considering the difficulty of execution.

Which of the rats could walk up to any cat and tie a bell around its neck? Who will bell the cat? Any rat that tries this will get viciously harassed and he will only be lucky to get out of the situation with his life.

So, who will bell the cat?

Like the rats, there are truths that need be said in Osun today, but no one is willing to say, for fear of attacks, victimization and termination of patronage, especially for those who have political ambitions.

One of these truths, is that there are men in Osun today, who should forget about contesting in any other Governorship election, starting from 2022. From age, to capacity, to acceptability, there are several reasons why these men should perish the idea of running for Governor ever again.

I am hoping to start off a chain of conversations, that will help Osun properly envision the kind of person it needs at the helm of affairs and dump rhetorics.

A quick caveat. The thoughts reflected here may not be acceptable to all persons; it is in fact not written to be accepted, but to ignite discussions that will help us make the right decisions.

Dr. Akin Ogunbiyi should perish the thought of contesting for Governor in 2022. At the mention of his candidacy, a lot of enmities spring, swearing to make sure a “mole” is given no chance to run on the ticket of the PDP.

While he has capacity to govern, given his track record as a successful private sector player, the ready-made enmity that his name attracts makes a Governorship project with his name on it, closer to failure than success. Again, while his enemies are not tired, he has also not appropriately ‘maintained’ his friends in the last 2-3 years. This ‘maintenance’ in political parlance is all the difference between success and failure.

Alh. Fatai Akinbade is a man I love and respect so much. I have no doubt about his capacity to deliver people-oriented leadership if given the chance to govern. But, he has contested enough and it’s time to take a deserved rest.

The politics of Nigeria has become heavily monetary, leaving the chances for victory open to only people who have very thick financial war chest and are willing to squander. With due respect to the fine Ogbaagbaa man, he does not have these resources and must not allow our present-day moneybag politics to empty his personal reserve.

Aside the above, Akinbade is tending toward 70 now and it will be a clear expression of disbelief in the capacity of younger men and women, if he chooses to run for Governor again. There are much younger men and women who share his vision and he can support for Governor.

Sen. Iyiola Omisore should please forget contesting again. Chrisore as he is fondly called, is a politician of great stature. Governor or not, his profile in Osun politics today cannot be underrated by anybody.

But, he has also contested enough. His ambition has caused division a number of times, particularly in his former party, the PDP. It is however time for him to rest that ambition, so that he can join hands with other political leaders to support a worthy candidate who will deliver the leadership Osun needs.

Alh. Moshood Adeoti is a good man and I can attest to it. Aside being kind and humane, I also know his grassroots-friendly kind of politics mean he will probably run a populist government. This is not bad, as it puts the people first.

But, Adeoti’s dilly-dallying in the past two years may have painted of him, the image of an unstable politician. Aside the image, his return to the APC also means he must now be willing to play by the selection method of the APC that he frowned at in 2018. This method will not make a Governor out of him, so he is better off perishing the idea from now.

Dr. Peter Babalola is another man who should stop adding to the number of aspirants. He runs all the time, only to end up not getting to the field of primaries. He is now older than this perpetual aspiration and should just be a stakeholder in 2022.

I believe there is a generation of younger politicians who have also made their mark in politics and industry, and are capable of governing a State like Osun.

Where the incumbent Governor is fully expected to fly the flag of the APC in 2022 for a second term, the aspiration of any other man or woman within the APC appear dead on arrival. It means that in addition to Adeoti who is now a full Member of the APC and Omisore who is bonded to the APC by a yet-to-be-understood coalition, every member of the APC who is interested in the Abere seat must wait beyond 2022, except there are plans to pull the rug from under the Governor’s feet.

I almost forgot Sen. Ademola Adeleke. He should ordinarily not be running for Governor. Aside the question marks on his capacity to provide true leadership, there is also the question of whether or not he is even familiar with the true State of affairs in Osun.

While he campaigned in 2018, he made no definitive policy statements that showed he understood the situation on ground. Yes, he danced and entertained Osun people, not forgetting to also use the “I won’t withhold salaries like Aregbesola” cliché, but that was all there was to it. Osun needs a man with a clear plan for our macro and micro economies. Except he has ‘grown’ into that description in the last two years, he should not really bore us with his campaigns.

I say again, there are men and women in the slightly younger generation, who have proven capacity in politics and industry, to drive the State forward. We should be looking in those directions.

The names we have been hearing in Governorship contests since democracy began 21 years ago and the names that strike the wrong chords in people, should let us breathe and listen to other people.

After all, life na soldier go, soldier come.

LASG Rolls Out Modalities For School Reopening, COVID-19 Preventive Measures

0

The Lagos State Government has disclosed the modalities that would be used for schools resumption after a sudden closure to prevent coronavirus spread in the state, saying, a staggered method will be adopted for student resumption.

It stated that the method would allow teachers to have a grip on coordinating and monitoring students’ activities towards strict adherence to coronavirus guidelines within the school premises.

The Commissioner for Education, Folashade Adefisayo, through a statement released by the government, said that efforts were ongoing by Babajide Sanwo-Olu led administration to ensure schools remain a safe place for students to learn without contracting coronavirus.

“The Commissioner also mentioned that the State Government will adopt a staggered method for the resumption of students to allow their teachers to have proper coordination while monitoring the activities of the students”.

Part of the strategy to ensure schools do not aid COVID-19 spread, Adefisayo said was the ongoing school inspection to find out the infrastructural needs and the intervention required by the schools from the government ahead of resumption.

The commissioner stated that the visit became necessary in view of the ongoing deliberations on modalities for school resumption, especially in respect of the forthcoming West African Senior Secondary Certificate Examinations (WASSCE) and how to ensure the safety of the participating.

While underscoring the need to educate schools in Lagos on how to safeguard students and teachers, she emphasised that necessary safety measures should be available before resumption, amidst the prevailing COVID-19 pandemic.
Adefisayo explained that each school must have running water with soaps and sanitisers at its entrance and at other strategic locations within the premises to encourage students and teachers to wash their hands regularly in addition to the compulsory use of face masks.
According to her, the sitting arrangement of students in a standard classroom must not be above 20 for physical distancing and in order to allow the teachers to have unhindered movement around the classrooms.
The commissioner meanwhile, commended commitment of the Tutor-General/Permanent Secretary, Education District II, Anike Adekanye, for visiting the 106 schools under her supervision within the short period of her redeployment to the District to familiarise herself with the officers to provide a lasting solution to their challenges.
She urged the Principals and School Authorities in the District to ensure that the school environment is conducive for learning, assuring that proper safety measures would be put in place before WASSCE commence.
Among schools inspected were Isawo Senior Community Grammar School, IsawoGberigbe Senior High School, Gberigbe, and Elepe Senior /Junior Grammar Schools.

Consider Reopening Private Varsities Before Public Ones, Afe Babalola Tells FG

0

Afe Babalola, founder of Afe Babalola University, Ado Ekiti, has urged the Federal Government to consider reopening private universities before their public counterparts.

He said this in a goodwill message at a Zoom meeting of the Pro Chancellors of Private Universities in Nigeria on Sunday.

Babalola said this is “on account of the moral and physical discipline, quality and functional education, hygienic and safe environment, predictable academic calendar, absence of trade unionism, committed teachers, modern teaching equipment and laboratories, and adequate preparation to prevent COVID-19 as well as fully residential status of private universities.”

“Private universities are fully residential for both the students and staff. As a result, the students in private universities are better disciplined, better and easier to control, better mentored unlike their counterparts in public university 80 per cent of who come from home in public transport. Most, if not all, of the private universities, have their campuses fenced with full control over who comes in and who goes out.

“I believe that most private universities have complied or are in a position to comply with the provisions required by the PTF before the universities can reopen. I, therefore, suggest that the Pro-Chancellors should ask any university that has all the requirements to apply for inspection of the university and where a university has all the equipment and materials, it be given approval to reopen.”

Educational institutions across the country have been shut since March due to the outbreak of COVID-19. While the country has since reopened some sectors of the economy, schools have remained shut.

DAVID SILVA ADMITS PRIDE AT CITY CAREER

0

David Silva has revealed that he is proud of his Manchester City career after making his final ever Premier League appearance for the Club.
The Spaniard was as creative as ever for Pep Guardiola’s side during the 5-0 victory over Norwich City at the Etihad.

The skipper came close to finding the net on a couple of occasions, only to be denied by some expert defending and goalkeeping by the visitors.

Silva has enjoyed a stellar decade at City, winning the Premier League four times and he was quick to express his pride at his achievements with the Club.

In an interview with silva, he said “Of course I am very proud,” he said. “To win so many titles and the way we won it. I am a lucky guy.

“I have had a lot of nice moments, and this one as well, the last one.

“I will miss everything – even the weather as well! I’m going to miss working every day with these amazing people.

“They have made my life much easier. It was emotional and I love all of them.”

Guardiola’s men still have a UEFA Champions League last 16 second-leg clash with Real Madrid coming up early next month, and Silva is determined to keep focused.

“This was the last one in the Premier League, but we have to focus on the Champions League.

“I hope we can win it,” he continued. “It’s a shame that we can’t play with the fans here, but of course, the safety of the people is the most important thing.”

As reiterated by Guardiola on many occasions, Silva will be given a fitting tribute by everyone at the Club when supporters are allowed back in stadiums.

Why I Dumped PDP For APC – Dogara

0

Yakubu Dogara, former speaker of the House of Representatives, has explained why he left the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

In a letter of resignation addressed to the Bogoro ‘C’ Ward Chairman of the PDP, Dogara cited failure of governance in Bauchi State, his home state, under the administration of governor Bala Mohammed, whom he helped install in 2019.

Dogara said he cannot ask questions about bad administration without being accused of disloyalty, if he remains in the PDP.

He argued that if he abdicates this responsibility of telling the truth in the state, having done same under the administrations of former governors, Isa Yuguda and Mohammed Abubakar, he will be the most irresponsible and unprincipled politician.

“Mr. Chairman, you will agree with me that I cannot raise these issues and many more questions without a charge of disloyalty levelled against me if I were to remain a member of the PDP,” the letter partly read.

“I cannot also fail to raise these questions now, having raised similar ones during the administrations of Governors Isa Yuguda and Mohammed A. Abubakar. If I abdicate this responsibility on the altar of partisan loyalty, I will be the most irresponsible and unprincipled politician in Bauchi State.

“Thus, by this letter, I have resigned my membership of the PDP to enable me keep faith with my principle of fighting for good governance in our Dear State.”

See full letter below

The Chairman

People’s Democratic Party,

Bogoro ‘C’ Ward,

Bogoro LGA,

Bauchi State.

LETTER OF RESIGNATION OF MY MEMBERSHIP OF THE PDP

Above subject matter refers.

I write to intimate you of my decision to resign my membership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

This became necessary because the same reasons why we fought hard in 2019 to effect changes in the Governance of our dear state are festering now.

I intend to bring these issues to the front burners once again as the fight to install decent

and egalitarian government in our dear state continues.

Specifically, I intend to ask questions about the following:

What has happened to LGA allocations since May 2019?
What happened to our campaign promise to conduct LGA elections within six months of the PDP government?
What happened to the N4.6 billion loan taken from a bank and paid directly into an private company’s account?
Why are we segmenting salaries and why is payment of salaries of state workers outsourced to a private firm as consultants?
Why are contracts inflated, awarded and payment of mobilisation done in violation of extant rules on procurement?
Why are our highly revered Traditional Rulers and Elders treated with odium contrary to the guarantee we gave during the campaign that such will not happen under a PDP government?
Mr. Chairman, you will agree with me that I cannot raise these issues and many more questions without a charge of disloyalty levelled against me if I were to remain a member of the PDP.

I cannot also fail to raise these questions now, having raised similar ones during the administrations of Governors Isa Yuguda and Mohammed A. Abubakar. If I abdicate this responsibility on the altar of partisan loyalty, I will be the most irresponsible and unprincipled politician in Bauchi State.

Thus, by this letter, I have resigned my membership of the PDP to enable me keep faith with my principle of fighting for good governance in our Dear State.

1000 Brazilian COVID-19 Patients die, 50,000 Tests Positive in 24 hours

Atleast 50,000 Brazilians contracted coronavirus and over 1000 others died after contracting the virus within 24 hours in the country.

The number of cases recorded was the third day in a row the South American country would experience a high number of people contracting the virus.

Following the statistics released yesterday, more than 2.3 million Brazilians were already infected by the virus in the largest and most populous country in Latin America.

The country’s Health Ministry released the statistics and stated that over 85,238 people have died after contracting COVID-19, the lung disease caused by the virus.

Meanwhile, health experts believed that the figures were far higher than the statistics brandished by the government due to insufficient testing in the South American country, which has 210 million inhabitants.

Brazil’s far-right populist president, Jair Bolsonaro, had initially downplayed the novel coronavirus and described it as flu that does not need any seriousness.

As gathered, the utterances of the presidents caused confusion among the population about the seriousness of the disease.

After downplaying the virus, Bolsonaro was not to have taken any containment measures for economic reasons and refused protective measures even after it became obvious that the virus had spread to Brazil.

Days after dispelling the virus, Bolsonaro tested positive for the virus, a development that forced the Mayor of Sao Paulo to announce postponement of the city’s major carnival celebrations earlier scheduled for February next year without giving a new date.
