FRSC deploys Traffic-monitoring Drones ahead Eid celebration in Niger

As part of the measure to ease vehicular movement during Eid celebration in Niger State, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), has concluded plans to deploy drones to monitor traffic in the state.

Aside from deploying drones, FRSC will also deploy at least 1,010 personnel to manage traffic during the 2020 Eid.

Confirming the deployment, Niger State Sector Command, Joel Dagwa, who disclosed this during an interview with newsmen in Minna, said that the command would deploy additional patrol vehicles, three ambulances, a tow truck, and power bike for road surveillance during the celebrations.

Dagwa explained that the deployment was in line with the ongoing Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) containment operations in the state.

The sector commander urged motorists to desist from breaching traffic laws and driving under influence of alcohol to avoid road crashes during and after the Eid celebration.

”We have since embarked on aggressive patrols at Mokwa, Magama, Rafi, Suleja and Paikoro Local Government Areas that share borders with FCT, Kaduna, Kebbi, Kogi and Kwara states.

“We will ensure that only qualified and duly certified drivers and vehicles ply highways during and after the festivities,” Dagwa added.

Eid-el-Kabir: Gbajabiamila Donates Food Packs To Constituents

Femi Gbajabiamila, Speaker of the House of Representatives, has donated food packs to his constituents of Surulere 1 Federal Constituency in Lagos State ahead of the upcoming Eid-el-Kabir celebration.

This is the second time in two months that Gbajabiamila has made such donation to his constituents, comprising residents of Akerele, Shitta, Bode Thomas, Adeniran Ogunsanya, Eric Moore, Games Village/Akinsemonyi, Iponri Estate, Alaka, Onilegororo, Barracks, Ojuelegba, Masha and Ogunlana axis of Surulere.

The contents of the food pack, as seen by one of our correspondents on Wednesday, include five plastics of rice, two sachets of tomato paste, a sachet of spaghetti and a sachet of sugar.

Gbajabiamila had distributed similar food packs as palliatives to his constituents in May during the total lockdown declared by the Federal Government due to the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

The period also coincided with the Eid-el-Fitr celebration, marking the end of the Muslim Ramadan fast.

The federal lawmaker, who was elected Speaker of the House of Representatives in 2019, has been representing his constituency since 2003.

In Afghanistan, the Taliban government have declared a three-day ceasefire on the occasion of Eid-ul-Adha starting from Friday.

A spokesman of Taliban, Zabihullah Mujahid in a tweet said that they have directed the Taliban not to carry out any operation during this period.

However, he clarified that if Taliban fighters come under attack from government forces, they will retaliate.

Meanwhile, the Afghan President’s spokesman, Sediq Sediqqi, has welcomed the ceasefire announcement.

The National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) has concluded arrangements for the commencement of registration of pilgrims for 2021 Hajj exercise.

The Executive Secretary of the State Muslim Pilgrims Welfare Board Alhaji Abubakar Babangida Tafida who is also a Tafidan Giade made the disclosure today while addressing newsmen in his office.

Alhaji Babangida Tafida said 9th September 2020 would be the commencement of registration of intending pilgrims as the commission’s portal would be opened for the exercise.

Babangida tafida stated that the refund of this year’s hajj deposit is on going, noting that 20-30% of depositors have applied for their refund.

He therefore used the forum to advise this year’s intending pilgrims who are withdrawing their deposited money with the Board to think twice as the exercise is fast approaching.

The Executive Secretary said the board will adopt first come first serve policy in the distribution of the 2021 Hajj slots to intending pilgrims in the state.

On the construction of Permanent Hajj Camp in the state, Alhaji Abubakar Babangida Tafida said work has reached over fifty percent completion, stressing that the contractors handling the project have assured their commitment towards the timely completion of the project.

While assuring the 2021 pilgrims from the state they will be the first people to use the facility, the executive secretary called on the people of the state to rally round the present administration of Governor Bala Abdulkadir Muhammad to enable it take the state to greater height.

Three die, Scores Injure after Gas Explosion in Lagos

At least three persons have been confirmed dead and over three others sustaining varying degrees of injuries when a gas explosion occurred in Ajao Estate, Oshodi-Isolo Local Government, Lagos State.

Also, several cars worth millions of naira were said to have been destroyed after the explosion occurred on Tuesday evening.

Equity News correspondent gathered that the explosion that rocked the axis occurred on Inua Mohammed Street, off Asafariogun street, leaving dozens of residents to scamper for safety.

An eyewitness at the scene told our correspondent that the explosion started from a shop in the community.

Prayer Rugs to be Distributed to Hajj Pilgrims Free – Saudi Government Agency

The General Presidency for the Affairs of the Grand Mosque and the Prophet’s Mosque has prepared payer rugs for pilgrims, as part of the eighth “We are proud to serve pilgrims and visitors” campaign.

The pilgrims will receive the prayer rugs in sealed and sterilized bags.

This comes as an extension of services being provided for pilgrims, emanating from the responsibility of the General Presidency for the Affairs of the Grand Mosque and the Prophet’s Mosque.

It also comes as a continuation of applying the highest precautionary standards and preventive measures to protect pilgrims.

JUDGMENT: Court issues warrant of arrest for ex-NASS Clerk Mohammed Omolori

Justice Suleman Belgore of an FCT High Court, sitting at Maitama on Monday issued a warrant for the arrest of the immediate past Clerk of the National Assembly, Mohammed Omolori.

Belgore issued the order following an ex parte application filed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) seeking an order of the court for the arrest of Omolori.

The EFCC in the application, marked M/8728/2020, filed before the court, alleged that the respondent had ignored its invitation for him to report to it’s office over an investigation of a petition.

The EFCC stated that it was investigating a petition, alleging diversion of 14 Toyota Hilux vehicles and 13 Peugeot 508 valued at over N400 million.

According to the commission, as part of its investigation activities, it invited the Secretary of the National Assembly Commission, Adamu Mohammed Fika, Mr Oluseye Ajakaye and others to its office.

It further stated that the invitees made revelations indicting Omolori, following this developing, letters were sent to him on Nov. 4, 2019, which Omolori failed to honour.

EFCC added that it sent another letter to him on March 16, 2020, which he still failed to honour.

In view of his failure , EFCC stated that it was left with no option than to approach the court for warrant of arrest to be issued against the respondent.

After listening to the counsel for EFCC, Mr S.N. Robert, Justice Belgore granted the order sought.

“I have considered the application, I averted to Paragraph 7 of the supporting affidavit and Exhibit EFCC 4 wherein the respondent was said to have ignored invitations to report in the applicant’s office without any justifiable reason.

“It is clear to me that Section 3 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA), 2015 can be invoked in the circumstances of this case in granting this application and I so do.

“Warrant of immediate arrest is hereby issued against Mohammed Omolori, the former Clerk of the National Assembly forthwith,” Justice Belgore ordered.

JUST IN: [JUDGMENT ] Appeal Court affirms Adeyemi as Kogi West Senator

The Court of Appeal in Abuja has dismissed the appeal by Dino Melaye, challenging election of Senator Smart Adeyemi as winner of the last election in Kogi West Senatorial District.

A three-man panel of the court, led by Justice Ibrahim Saulawa, unanimously resolved all seven issues, identified for determination, against the appellant (Melaye).

The panel upheld the judgment delivered on June 10, 2020 by the National Assembly Election Petition Tribunal, which affirmed the declaration of Adeyemi as winner of the election by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The appellate court, which struck out Adeyemi’s preliminary objection, awarded N50,000 costs against Melaye and in favour of the respondents.

The court also struck out the cross-appeal by Adeyemi and his party, the All Progressives Congress (APC) and awarded N50,000 cost against them.

24-year-old Farmer Arraigned In Court For Allegedly Raping 50-year-old Woman In Ondo

24-year-old farmer, Haruna Mohammed, has been arraigned before a magistrate’s court sitting in Akure, the Ondo State capital, for allegedly raping a 50-year-old woman.

The woman, whose name was not mentioned, was sexually abused on July 8, 2020 along Lalepa/Akinfosile Road at Igbotako area of the state.

Mohammed was arraigned before the court by the police in the state on a one count charge of rape.

Police prosecutor, Mr Augustine Omhenimhen, said the offence of Mohammed is punishable under section 358 of the Criminal Code CAP 37 Volume 1 Laws of Ondo State of Nigeria 2006.

He asked the court to remand the accused person in custody pending legal advice from the Department of Public Prosecution.

However, the plea of Mohammed was not taken in the court.

In her ruling, the Presiding Magistrate, Rasheedat Yakubu, remanded Mohammed in custody of the State Criminal Investigation Department pending legal advice from the DPP before adjourning the case.
