FG To Support Youth-based Businesses With N110 Billion – Minister

0

The federal government says the Nigeria Youth Investment Fund (NYIF) has been restructured with a capital base of N110 billion to support youth-led businesses.

The minister of youth, Jamila Ibrahim, stated this in Akure on Tuesday during a town hall meeting for South-West youths.

Ms Ibrahim said since the relaunch of the NYIF, it had received over 200,000 applications in less than two weeks.

According to the minister, the programme is designed to empower youths by making it easier to obtain loans for personal and entrepreneurial use.

“It is also to enhance their financial stability and ability to contribute to the economy.

“Additionally, we are establishing a National Youth Development Bank to provide financial support for youth-led enterprises.

“This institution will play a crucial role in empowering young entrepreneurs, enabling them to drive economic growth and innovation.

“President Tinubu has approved a 30 per cent youth quota in all government appointments, underscoring his belief in the potential of Nigerian youths.

“We are working on legislation to institutionalise this great legacy initiative, ensuring that youth representation in government becomes a permanent feature of our democracy,” she said.

According to Ms Ibrahim, the FG is also implementing robust reforms to enhance the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) experience.

Earlier, Gov. Lucky Aiyedatiwa of Ondo state had stated that youths were the backbone of society and emphasised the importance of their growth and empowerment for a prosperous future.

Mr Aiyedatiwa said his government was committed to creating an environment to foster innovation, creativity, and entrepreneurship, allowing young people to thrive and reach their full potential.

“We must invest in our young people, providing them with access to quality education, skills, training, and mentorship opportunities,” said the governor.

The governor expressed gratitude to the president for implementing policies under the Renewed Hope Agenda to address challenges such as unemployment, poverty, and inequality.

He commended the FG’s efforts to enlighten the youths and work toward a more inclusive and equitable society, stressing the moral, economic, and social imperatives of youth development.

“We believe in your energy, your creativity, and your passion. We believe that you have the power to transform our communities, our state, and our country,” he said.

Mr Aiyedatiwa also appreciated youths in the South-West region for rejecting calls for protests and maintaining peace and security.

“It is unequivocal to state that the CBN’s action is in accordance with the provisions of Section 42 (2) of the CBN Act, 2007. This arrangement is crucial for the financial health and operational stability of the post-merger organisation.

“Furthermore, it is important to emphasise that no Nigerian bank currently faces a precarious situation comparable to that of Heritage Bank, which was recently liquidated.

APC Summons Ndume, Moves To Reinstate Him As Senate Whip

0

The Dr Abdullahi Ganduje-led National Working Committee NWC of the ruling All Progressives Congress APC on Tuesday summoned Senator Ali Ndume to explain his recent utterances against President Bola Tinubu which led to the former’s removal as Senate Whip.

Speaking after the meeting, Dr Ganduje said the party was satisfied with Ndume’s apology and would convey same to the leadership of the Senate with a view to having it review its position.

Ndume was removed after the NWC wrote the Godswill Akpabio led Senate, complaining of the Borno senator’s utterances against Tinubu.

Speaking after the meeting at the national secretariat of the APC, Ganduje said; “We are quite satisfied with his apology. Like he said, we invited him and you know the party is the father of everybody. As a party, we are free to invite legislators, we are free to invite members of the executive, and we are even free to invite all the appointed party members in the government, so, that is why we decided to come.

“It is a family issue, we need to resolve it and we are writing to the National Assembly conveying what has transpired between Senator Ndume and the party and you know he apologized to the party and we will convey the same issue to the National Assembly, with the hope they can review their position”.

On his part, Ndume conceded that rather than raising some issues on national television, he should have complained to through the party leadership.

He said; “Yesterday, I was invited by the party and here I am to discuss family matters. Actually the national chairman is not just a national chairman to me but a father. With what has happened which you are all aware, it is not surprising that I was invited to hear my own side and we had family discussions and I actually accepted the mistake of not talking to the party as a last point and I promised the party that all my observations as a senior member of the family should have terminated or ended with the party. That is something that moving forward I will do but whatever I said or whatever I did was out of patriotism and those issues maybe said strongly but they are true but then I should have talked to the party as the last bus stop.

“My membership, I have not been expelled, even the party did not say we don’t want you here, because he is my father, the party is my father, the only thing the party said is that look if you don’t want this house you can go to any house. Where will I go? This is my house.

The President and the Senate have nothing to do with this. The President did not take offence, I didn’t insult the President, I didn’t say anything against the party but I left the party out of reaching it on issues and so, please I think that is all I can say”.

Hardship: Sanwo-olu Urges Agro, Food Processing Companies To Crash Prices

0

Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has urged agro and food processing companies to work toward reducing their prices during this time of economic hardship as a way of giving back to the society and ensuring food security in Nigeria.

Governor Sanwo-Olu made the call on Thursday during a courtesy visit by the Senior Management Team of Olam Agric Nigeria, led by its Managing Director/CEO, Mr. Anil Nasir, at Lagos House, Marina, saying that Nigerians were currently going through tough times; therefore, the need for private organisations, particularly agro and food processing companies to think about people’s survival and sustainability above profitability at this crucial period in Nigeria

Sanwo-Olu, who stressed the need for food security and support from every well-meaning individuals and organisations, said his administration had done a lot through several intervention programmes to cushion the effects of economic hardship on the residents of Lagos State, assuring that he would do more to continue to provide succour for the people.

“Agro and food processing is a critical industry because food security and food systems are as critical as people trying to safeguard either medical security or even sovereign security in times of war. There is no better security these days than food.

Today, being the first day of August, you can see agitation in some streets in Nigeria as a result of hunger. You (Olam Agric) are in a strategic position, and you have that structure and that capacity. At a difficult time like this, it shouldn’t be only the government reducing costs and providing avenues for people to buy things at a reduced price.

You must be able to tell your shareholders that you have been in this environment for such a long time, and today it should not be about profit-making. Let us go into this market and just cover our costs and let us pass on. Let the people feel the critical support.

“I want you to take this message back. The private sector needs to know that there are times when it does not have to be about value to the shareholders because of food security and the logistics nightmare that is happening everywhere due to the economic challenge. We are all joint stakeholders, and we need to slow down on shareholder returns. We need to be alive today to be able to make a profit tomorrow,” Governor Sanwo-Olu stated.

Speaking earlier, the Managing Director/CEO of Olam Agric Nigeria, Mr. Nair, commended Governor Sanwo-Olu for his leadership in the state in the last five years, especially in the areas of security and making Lagos safe for foreign and local investments.

He sought more partnerships with the Lagos State Government in the agriculture and food sectors, saying his company wqs ready to invest more in the state.

Governor Sanwo-Olu on Thursday also received the District Governor of Lions Club International District 404B2 Nigeria, Lion Tolulope Ayodeji Senbanjo, as well as the District Governor of Rotary International District 9112, Rotarian Olufemi Adenekan, and District Governor of Rotary International District 9111, Rotarian Oluwole Kukoyi, who paid him courtesy visits at Lagos House, Marina, respectively.

Speaking during the two courtesy visits, Sanwo-Olu commended Lions Club International and Rotary International for their humanitarian services in key sectors of the state, particularly in the provision of infrastructure in the areas of health, education, and transportation, among others.

He expressed his administration’s commitment to continue to partner with Rotary International and Lions Club International for humanitarian services to make life comfortable for Lagos residents in line with the THEMES+ developmental agenda, which aligns with the core values of the humanitarian groups.

US: Kamala Harris Clinches Delegates Votes To Be Democratic Party Candidate

0

Vice President Kamala Harris has secured enough votes from delegates to become her party’s nominee for president, Democratic National Committee Chair Jaime Harrison said Friday.

The announcement was made before the online voting process ends on Monday, reflecting the breakneck speed of a campaign that is eager to maintain momentum after President Joe Biden ended his reelection bid and endorsed Harris as his successor less than two weeks ago.

Harris is poised to be the first woman of color at the top of a major party’s ticket, and she joined a call with supporters to say she is “honored to be the presumptive Democratic nominee.”

“It’s not going to be easy. But we’re going to get this done,” she added. “As your future president, I know we are up to this fight.”

Harrison pledged that Democrats “will rally around Vice President Kamala Harris and demonstrate the strength of our party” during their convention in Chicago later this month.

The Democratic National Committee did not provide details of the delegate vote count, including a number or state-by-state breakdowns, during a virtual event that had the flavor of a telethon, with campaign officials keeping tabs on a delegate-counting process whose result is a foregone conclusion.

No other candidate challenged Harris for the nomination, and she swiftly solidified Democratic support in the days after Biden endorsed her.

Democrats still plan a state-by-state roll call during the party’s convention, the traditional way that a nominee is chosen. However, that will be purely ceremonial because of the online voting.

As Harris prepares to face off with Republican nominee Donald Trump, her campaign is reorganizing its senior staff and bringing on a coterie of veterans of President Barack Obama’s successful campaigns.

85 CSOs Carpets EFCC Over Reckless Shopping For Court Orders, Ask Justice Nwite to recuse himself of Kogi Corruption Cases

85 CSOs Carpets EFCC Over Reckless Shopping For Court Orders, Ask Justice Nwite to recuse himself of Kogi Corruption Cases, says Oricha is yet to be invited, queries need for arrest warrant

A coalition of eighty five registered Civil Society Organizations under the auspices of Coalition of Civil Society against Injustice in Nigeria have taken a swipe at the anti-corruption agency, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over what is calls reckless shopping for arrest warrant for individuals without due process and in manners that suggests persecution rather than prose of perceived corrupt office holders.

While accusing the agency of abusing processes, the group wondered why EFCC was in desperate search for an arrest warrant against the duo of Abdulsalamu Hudu and Umar Shuaibu, without extending invitations to them.

While Abdulsalamu Hudu served in the administration of the immediate governor Yahaya Bello, Umar Shuaibu Oricha is the Director General of Government House, Kogi State.

In a statement on Friday in Abuja, the CSO members numbering in their hundreds and led by its national coordinator, Dr. Benard Orji also wondered why EFCC has not been able to concentrate on one court to prosecute its case against the duo, but resorting to jumping from one court to the order in search of what it cannot get in a fair process.

He said the commission has demonstrated high level of desperation by seeking arrest of people that have not been invited for questioning for any perceived wrongdoing. The coalition says this action shows that the EFCC is persecuting instead of Prosecuting, an action it describes as politically motivated and putting the country’s fight against corruption in a bad light in the eyes of the international community.

He said, “It is on record that this leadership of EFCC has demonstrated an unassumingly disturbing level of abuse of both court processes, human rights and made mockery of whatever decency stands for.

“We must also remind the commission that it has continued to oscillate from one court to another, begging cap in hand what it knows will only be gotten in a skewed process. He argued that Justice Nwite of the Federal High Court is behaving as if he is on a mission alongside with EFCC different from what the law requires and what is obtainable in the fight against corruption anywhere all over the world.

“It is absurdity to deploy blackmail and intimidation in the so called fight against corruption. Most disturbing, it casts a big dent on our judicial system and how much it does to remain the last hope of the common man” the statement reads in part. The group thereafter asked the Judge to immediately recuse himself of all cases that concerns Kogi state as he has shown sufficient reasons why parties cannot trust any judgement flowing from his court again and therefore asked him to save the judiciary of further mess by withdrawing immediately from presiding over the matters that concern Kogi state. The group further called on the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court to reassign all Kogi cases before Justice Nwite to a neutral judge to protect the integrity of the judiciary before the public.

The group accused EFCC of deploying deceit, lies and manipulations to sway public opinion in order to curry accolades.

“The EFCC has accused the duo of making withdrawal of a whopping N46bn cash from the accounts of the state government. We dare ask, did the commission receive any letter of complaint from the Kogi state government to the effect that its funds are missing? Can the commission boldly tell us if the office of Director General of Government House and Director of Finance of same government house do not have the legal authority to withdraw money on behalf of government? Can the EFCC come out clean and trace the money was budgeted for or not?

“Has the commission also extended its investigation as to what the state government deployed the funds for? Has it also asked if the legacy projects dotted across Kogi, right from the immediate past government till this moment were executed at no cost?

“These are grand plans to call the dog a bad name just to hang it. It is clear to the blind and loud to the deaf that former Governor Yahaya Bello is their prime target.

“Why should EFCC not allow the wheel of justice grind to its logical conclusion after it has filed its case against Bello? Why does it have to resort to self-help out of sheer desperation”, the statement added.

It therefore called on the judiciary to be at the forefront of protecting the rights of citizens from flagrant abuse from agencies of government, instead of aiding their highhandedness.

It noted that the court should not be a super market where people shop for items placed on shelves, noting that it is inimical to the development of democracy.

Ijaw Youth Council Urges President Tinubu To End Weaponization Of Hunger, Poverty

0

The Ijaw Youth Council has charged the federal government under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to stop using hunger and poverty as a weapon to enslave Nigerians.

National Spokesman, IYC Comrade Berefa Bedford came out with this while speaking to newsmen in Yenagoa, the Bayelsa State capital saying the government has impoverished the people through the removal of fuel subsidy and the political gimmicks in the oil and gas sector.

Comrade Berefa noted that the government has not shown sincerity in governance as they have pushed the people to a state of extreme poverty which has led to the need for a protest which could have been avoided.

” They have taken advantage of the hunger in the land, they have automatically regulated the prices of food items, if they could do this, why did they wait until Nigerians decided to stage a protest before they could do this”

He emphasized that the government has been lackadaisical in handling the issues of the Niger Delta region hence the youths have also been forced to take to the streets to display their grievances.

” Now there is a conditional transfer of cash to over 10,000 persons by the NDDC, should they have waited till Nigerians come out to protest ”

The IYC Spokesperson called on the federal government to refurbish and revitalize the refineries as well create an enabling environment for artisan refineries to thrive in the region.

” We should be firm in oil and gas production in the country, the moribund refineries should be made functional, our systems should not be comatose, our systems should work”

He reiterated his call on President Tinubu to critically look into the issues affecting the Niger Delta people and strategically begin to proffer solutions for the development of the region which is also brings development to the country.
