It Is Not Subsidy: NNPC Explains Why It Sells Fuel Lower Than Landing Cost

0

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd.) says it has not paid fuel subsidies to anyone in the last nine months.

The Chief Financial Officer of the company, Alhaji Umar Ajiya, made the clarifications on Monday in Abuja.

Ajiya said NNPC Ltd. was only handling Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) importation shortfalls between the company and the federation.

In the last eight to nine months, NNPC Ltd. has not paid anybody a dime as a subsidy; no one has been paid Kobo by NNPC Ltd. in the name of subsidy.

No marketer has received any money from us by way of subsidy.

What has been happening is that we have been importing PMS, which has been landing at a specific cost price, and the government tells us to sell it at half price.

So the difference between the landing price and that half price is a shortfall.”

And the deal is between the Federation and NNPC Ltd., to reconcile, sometimes they give us money, so there is no money exchanging hands with any marketer in the name of subsidy,” he said.

He stated that credit lines are prevalent in downstream businesses based on the worldwide commercial system. He added that the company was in an open credit agreement with PMS suppliers in the past, with term-line contracts for payment.

Also, Dapi Segun, the Executive Vice President of downstream at NNPC Ltd., said that establishing an open credit agreement with suppliers spoke volumes about the credibility the national oil company had built over time.

Concerning the outstanding to the suppliers, it is not in that magnitude that has been put out, it is lower than the $6.8 billion.

What really matters is the relationship between us and our suppliers to ensure that we keep faith in making these payments to our suppliers, which we have done over time.

You would understand that it is not a static figure, and I wouldn’t want to quote any figure. When we make payments, it goes down, and when they supply products, it goes up.

It is a dynamic way, but the most important thing is to ensure that we continue to make PMS available across the country,” he said.

2027: Shekarau, Ardo, Yakasai, Tafida, Others Float Northern Democrats

0

A group of prominent political leaders from the North emerged yesterday, named the League of Northern Democrats (LND), which said it would convene a strategic summit to revive the region’s political and economic place in Nigeria.

The group, which declared its intention to unite and reposition the North as a leading force in Nigeria’s political landscape, further revealed that its general concern is the development of Northern Nigeria, stressing that it does not represent the interest of anybody.

The 226-member group, led by former governor of Kano State, Senator Ibrahim Shekarau, as interim chairman, Umar Ardo, as convener, and Hon. Emmanuel Jime as interim secretary, comprises former governors, federal lawmakers, and businessmen.

Besides Shekarau and Ardo, some of the top names in the group include Alhaji Tanko Yakasai, Sen. Ibrahim Ida, PhD, CON (Wazirin Katsina); Kabir Tafida (Sarki Fadan Sokoto); Falalu Bello; Dr. Jamilu Isyaka Gwamna (Sardauna Gombe); Emmanuel Jime and Mohammed Kumalia.

Others are Malam Salihu Lukman, Amb. Usman Sarki, Engr. Dallaji Noah, Prof. Usman Yusuf, Muktari Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, Aminu Shehu Shagari, and Murtala Shehu Yar’adua (Tafidan Katsina), among others.

After a meeting at the Yar’adua Centre in Abuja, a communique said, “The LND resolved to prioritise the political unity of Northern Nigeria.

“Recognising the diverse backgrounds and experiences within our ranks, we are committed to fostering a strong sense of community and solidarity. This unity will be the foundation for our efforts to reposition the North as a leading force in Nigeria’s political landscape.”

They also resolved to write to critical stakeholders in Northern Nigeria to garner their support and participation in the movement.

Those to reach out to include: all former Heads of State; all former and serving vice presidents; former Senate presidents; former Speakers of the House of Representatives; former Chief Justices; former Service Chiefs, Inspectors-General of Police, Comptrollers-General of Customs, Immigration, and Prisons; key distinguished elder statesmen, businessmen and employers of labour, trade unions and other relevant entities.

According to the group, the involvement of these stakeholders is crucial to the success of its mission.

Northern Nigerian Political Summit For Kaduna

The LND resolved to organise a Northern Nigerian Political Summit to be held in Kaduna.

The summit will serve as a platform for discussing the region’s political future, economic development and security challenges. It will bring together key leaders, thinkers and influencers to chart a new course for the North.

According to its communique, “The League of Northern Democrats is firmly committed to improving Northern Nigeria and the nation. The task is immense, but with determination, collaboration and strategic action, we believe we can achieve the transformative changes that the North and Nigeria urgently need. “We look forward to all members’ continued participation and support as we work towards realising our shared vision.”

Responding to questions, Shekarau said the group’s general concern is about development in Northern Nigeria and not anybody’s interest.

He said the members would come up with possible strategies on how to improve communities in the region through general societal reorientation and enlightening the people on what their primary challenges and their basic needs are.

He said they would educate the people on the need for good governance, the growth of the economy and wealth creation, relevance of education, security, and unity.

According to him, an electoral committee will be set up to sensitise elected leaders “so that they will appreciate the aspirations of the people.”

He stated that the main aim of seven committees to be set up would be to produce a document that “we can confront anybody seeking our votes, that these are the aspirations of our people. We want you to assure us that this will be part of your guiding principles.”

He added: “It is a political thought, not about any person or political party, and it is necessarily about 2027. It is an all-time issue. We want to produce a document which is not about a year, two-year, or 10-year issue.”

Speaking on the recent hardship protest, he said, “Government should see the protest against bad governance as a challenge. The speech of the President confirmed this, but we want to see action. And it is not about the federal government. We are talking about the state governments and local government

On his part, Umar Ardo said, “People of like minds from the North that came together to solve the northern problem. We are not worried about the problem of appointments; we are worried about the problems of insecurity, hunger, starvation, poverty, and the economy.

“We are not worried about appointments; appointments will come and go, but the important issue is to resolve this issue conclusively.”

IHS Towers Sacks 100 Employees As Devaluation In Nigeria Erodes Profits.

0

IHS Towers ($IHS), the world’s fourth-largest independent tower company, has laid off over 100 employees as currency devaluation in Nigeria, its biggest market, squeezes its profits. One person with direct knowledge of the business told TechCabal that the layoffs, which cut across several departments, mostly affected senior employees and the network surveillance team.

Most of the affected senior employees have spent a decade at IHS Towers and received “significant” severance packages, the same person said. “[The company said] it was not because of underperformance but because of the economy,” they added.

IHS Towers did not immediately respond to requests for comments.

Since 2022, IHS Towers has faced pressure from investors over its poor financial performance. The company lost $409 million in the fourth quarter of 2023 after a currency devaluation in Nigeria shrunk revenues and caused FX losses from USD loans.

The company, which currently employs 1,600 people, reported a $1.9 billion loss in 2023, a 304% increase from the previous year’s losses. Its market capitalisation is $1.3 billion, a $6 billion decline since 2021.

While its share price has slightly rebounded in August to $3.56 after trading at $2.98 in July, it is still a far cry from the highs of 2021, when it sold for $21.

IHS Towers operates over 40,000 towers in Africa, roughly 25% of the continent’s entire tower infrastructure, which it leases to telcos like MTN and Airtel. This service is crucial for Africa’s digital economy plans, as towers provide the backbone for internet connectivity.

However, rising fuel prices, maintenance costs, inflation, and FX volatility in Nigeria—which accounts for over half of IHS’s sales and revenue—have threatened the business.

In the first quarter of 2024, the business spent $88.8 million on power, its largest operating cost.

“The company used more than $1.5 billion in cash last year for investing activities, but the line items on the company’s published statement of cash flows for such investing activities are not explained in any meaningful way,” a shareholder said in a June 2023 letter.

Gimba Mohammed, the director of government and external relations at IHS Towers, said at a conference in August that it cost the business more than ₦14 billion to fix fibre cuts between 2022 and 2023.

Support NDDC To Change The Narrative In Niger Delta – Oboghor

0

A stakeholder in Bayelsa State, Chief Anthony Oboghor has called on the people of the Niger Deltan, especially Bayelsans, to rally round the Managing Director of Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), Dr Samuel Ogbuku to correct the lopsided development in the region

Chief Oboghor, who hails from Kenan community in Sagbama Local Government Area, stated this while fielding questions from journalists iduring a birthday reception organized in honour of Dr. Ogbuku in Yenagoa, the Bayelsa State capital.

He frowned at the level of underdevelopment of the region which produces the mainstay of Nigeria’s economy, but expressed joy that under the watch of Dr Ogbuku, the NDDC has been reinvigorated to spearhead development of the oil-rich region in line with its core mandate.

“the NDDC is an interventionist agency which was created to bridge the gap in level of development. You will agree with me that we are not like other regions, there’s hardship, poverty, pollution and insecurity in our region, this is mainly due to the lopsided focus of previous federal government administrations and now we are seeing a change”

He described Dr. Ogbuku as a seasoned administrator, energetic, self-driven and visionary leader who over the years has distinguished himself in the service to the state and nation and thanked President Bola Tinubu for reappointing him.

According to Chief Oboghor, who is a trained accountant, Bayelsans and the people of Niger Delta will forever be grateful to President Tinubu for reappointing Dr Ogbuku, who has drawn commendations from across party lines due to his record of achievements so far.

He cited as apt and important the Niger Delta Stakeholders Summit 2024 which was held in Port Harcourt, the River State capital, with Senate President, Chief Godswill Akpabio representing President Tinubu, Minister for Niger Delta Development, Engr. Abubakar Momoh, Governors, traditional rulers and other stakeholders who came together to discuss and fashion ways to achieve the developmental agenda for the region.

“the summit was and is a good idea and we must commend Dr Samuel Ogbuku for this laudable initiative. We ought to have had such a summit long ago but even now, we hope all stakeholders including IOCs will work together to make a difference ” he said.

Chief Oboghor, who noted that no other NDDC MD had performed so well in the short time Dr Ogbuku had been in office, while citing the achievements of the Dr. Ogbuku-led NDDC to include lighting up communities with solar lights, construction of roads, skill acquisition programmes and much more.

He particularly appreciated the NDDC boss’ offer to complete the bad section of the East-West road which has made life unbearable for motorists because of its deplorable condition where road users spend countless hours and even sleep on the road.

“Not long ago, my Governor, Senator Douye Diri spoke about the East-West road and he was unhappy, we are all not happy about the way the road is being handled. And when I heard the news that our son and brother, Dr Samuel Ogbuku has offered to take over the rehabilitation of the road i was happy. We need this road because it is very important to our survival.

There’s no politics in development. We must work together or else we fail together. I believe things will soon change in the Niger Delta region”

The trained accountant however appealed to Dr. Ogbuku to consider extending his laudable projects to some neglected areas of Bayelsa, pointing out that places like…..in Sagbama Constituency Three, the people need to feel the impact of NDDC in areas of road projects, provision of potable water, solar lights, construction of healthcare centre among others.

He appealed to stakeholders in the region, especially state governors, traditional rules, youth-bssed groups like the Ijaw Youth Council Worldwide and Multinational Oil Companies to work with the NDDC to achieve set goals.

According to Chief Oboghor “we lay the golden egg that feeds this nation but why are we lagging behind? Thank God the NDDC. is now working in line with our collective aspirations. I believe the future is bright but we must support and remain peaceful so that the NDDC can fulfill it’s mandate under close supervision of Dr Ogbuku”

Nigeria Owes NNPC $4.9 Billion Fuel Debt

0

The Federal Government owes the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited almost half of what it plans to collect in revenues this year for the petrol subsidy it reintroduced in August last year, Bloomberg reported on Monday.

The report stated that NNPC is owed N7.8tn ($4.9bn) by the government in subsidy debts for the seven months to July, citing NNPC’s Chief Financial Officer Umar Ajiya. The government aims to collect N19.4tn in revenue this year.

The subsidy that was withdrawn in May last year by Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu to help repair the state’s finances after debt-service costs jumped to 96 per cent of revenues was reinstated to allow measures to be introduced that could cushion Nigerians from spiraling inflation that’s at 33 per cent.

The government will allow NNPC to offset about N2.2tn it owes the state against the subsidy debt, Ajiya said in an interview after the company announced its results in Abuja, the capital, according to Bloomberg.

The government accumulated the debt to the NNPC because it is the sole importer of petrol, which it resells to marketers at below-market cost to keep prices low.

A litre of petrol sells for about N617 at the pump at NNPC retail stations in Abuja, compared with more than the N1,000 price in other locations, fueling cross-border smuggling of the product.

The state oil company recorded an annual profit of N3.3tn in 2023, compared with N2.55tn a year earlier. It plans to invest $6.6bn in its operations this year, which will be largely borrowed, Ajiya said.

It foresees crude and condensates production increasing to two million barrels a day by year-end from an average of 1.75 million barrels per day in August, helped by improved security to combat oil theft.
