The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) President, Joe Ajaero, on Thursday landed at the Nigeria Police Force attached with the Intelligence Response Team (IRT) to answer some questions that relate to allegations on terrorism financing.

9News Nigeria correspondent monitoring the development reports that Joe Ajaero landed at the Force Headquarters around 10 :28am this morning.

The labour leader, according to the police in a letter sent to him last week, will also offer explanations to the allegations that border on “criminal conspiracy, treasonable felony, subversion and cybercrime”.

Pavel Durov released On €5m Bail, banned From Leaving France

0

French authorities on Tuesday indicted Telegram CEO Pavel Durov with six charges and released him from custody on a €5 million bail.

Durov faces six charges including “complicity in the offences of making available without legitimate reason a program or data designed for… organized gang distribution of images of minors presenting child pornography, drug trafficking”, “complicity in web-mastering an online platform in order to enable an illegal transaction in organized group” and “refusal to communicate, at the request of competent authorities, information or documents necessary for carrying out and operating interceptions allowed by law,” the Paris prosecutor’s office said in a press release dated Wednesday.

Durov is forbidden from leaving France and must check in at a police station twice a week.

Russian-born tech tycoon Durov was detained at Paris’ Le Bourget airport on Saturday night, as part of a sprawling inquiry into criminal activity on the messaging platform.

Telegram, a messaging app based in Dubai, has long been scrutinized over accusations of rampant fraud, drug trafficking, organized crime, terrorism promotion and cyber-bullying on the platform.

After Durov’s arrest, Telegram pushed back strongly against any suggestion of wrongdoing in an online statement Sunday, saying it abides by all EU laws and that Durov “has nothing to hide.”

72 Illegal Refineries Uncovered In One Week

0

No fewer than 72 illegal crude oil refining sites were uncovered in the past week, the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited disclosed in a video report.

The 72 illegal refineries were reportedly discovered and destroyed in Rivers, Delta and Abia states.

On August 18, a vessel was said to have been arrested by men of Operation Delta Safe with 12 suspects on board in the Southern Ijaw area of Bayelsa State.

“The tugboat was caught loaded with stolen Shell Petroleum Development Company flow lines, which shows that not only did the thieves break the pipelines in order to connect their pipes, but they also harvested oil pipelines as well,” the NNPC said.

It revealed that the 12 arrested suspects were in custody for further investigation.

It was added that 46 vessel automatic identification system infractions were recorded at sea, while 24 wooden boats conveying stolen crude were apprehended in Rivers and Bayelsa States.

The state-owned energy firm stated that on land, several vehicles loaded with stolen crude were apprehended in Delta, Rivers and Bayelsa States.

In the past week, 33 illegal connections were uncovered in the three states.

Eight cases of oil spill were recorded as a result of vandalism in the period under review, while 12 sites used for storing stolen crude and illegally refined products were uncovered.

From August 17 to 23, 204 incidents of oil theft were recorded by different incident sources.

“47 of the incidents took place in the deep blue water, 10 in the western region, 100 in the central region and 47 in the eastern region,” it was disclosed.

A total of 42 suspects had been arrested in connection with the incident.

AMCON Set To Sell Ibadan DISCO

0

The Assets Management Corporation of Nigeria says the only way to make the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company more efficient is to sell it to viable investors.

The AMCON Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer, Gbenga Alade, stated this at an interactive session with media executives in Lagos on Monday.

Alade told journalists that when he took office five months ago, he reviewed the cases before AMCON, saying the power sector is one.

The AMCON boss believes that no economy can grow and move forward without a stable power supply.

He noted that the corporation has tried to resolve the issues affecting the IBEDC, but the process has yet to be concluded.

The PUNCH recalls that in January 2022, AMCON took over the IBEDC due to insolvency.

This followed a September 2021 court judgment that granted preservative orders in favour of AMCON, being the receiver/manager of Integrated Energy Distribution and Marketing Limited.

Speaking, Alade disclosed that the Disco being managed by AMCON would be sold to investors with ”deep pockets”.

“In the power sector, we have Ibadan DisCo, which is under AMCON. We’ve tried as much as possible to get that resolved. And we’re in the process. We are yet to conclude the sale, but we are making very good headway in resolving Ibadan DisCo,” he said.

Alade expressed optimism that the IBEDC would be profitable if sold, saying it covers different states, including Ogun industrial areas.

”I believe that Ibadan Disco is the largest disco that we have because it goes across so many states like Ogun, including all the industrial areas of Ogun State. We believe that it can be made more efficient if sold to people with deep pockets who can invest, not people who just buy and not invest; they don’t have money to invest.

“With people who have deep pockets to invest in making that company more efficient and more effective, it will go a long way to helping the power sector,” he noted.

The PUNCH recalls that the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, in April ordered the sale of Discos that have been taken over by banks and the Assets Management Corporation from its original investors/owners.

Currently, four Discos are under the management of banks and AMCON.

Aside from the IBEDC, the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company is under the management of the United Bank of Africa, while Fidelity Bank manages Benin, Kaduna, and Kano DisCos.

The four Discos are under these new managements due to their inability to repay their loans to the financial institutions.

To bolster the power sector, the AMCON boss noted that the corporation has completed a power project in Kaduna State.

“We also looked at the Kaduna power project as well, which has been abandoned for a few years. By God’s grace, we were able to sign an MoU with the project people. Work has already started on that project as well,” he maintained.

Industrial Court orders firm to pay retirees N34m retirement benefits, 91 months contributory pension

0

Hon. Justice Hassan Yakubu of the Ibadan Judicial Division of the National Industrial Court has ordered Prestrest Ltd and 4 others to pay Mr Aboluwarin Olusegun and 34 other retired staff the sum of N25,239,744.45 (Twenty-five Million, Two Hundred and Thirty-Nine Thousand, Seven Hundred and Forty Four Naira, Forty Five Kobo) outstanding balance of their retirement benefits, and the sum of N9,000,000.00 (Nine Million Naira Only) contributory pensions deducted from their salaries for 7 years and 7 months, from 2003 to 2010.

The Court ruled that by virtue of the written agreement dated 17th day of July 2012 duly signed by Prestrest Ltd and 4 others, the company cannot still refuse to pay the balance of Mr Aboluwarin Olusegun and 34 others’ terminal benefits.

From facts, the claimant- Mr Aboluwarin Olusegun and 2 others suing for themselves and on behalf of 32 other retired staff of Prestrest Ltd had submitted that they were retired staff whom have been properly disengaged by the firm sometime in the year 2011 but were not fully paid their terminal benefits.

They further averred that due to non-payment of their terminal benefit, an agreement was reached at the instance of the Federal Ministry of Labour and Productivity through Ogun State Controller in 2012. The aggregate sum owed them was calculated by the firm to be the sum of N31,991,386.11 (Thirty- One Million, Nine Hundred and Ninety-One Thousand, Three Hundred and Eighty-Six naira, Eleven Kobo) and the sum of N6,751,641,66 (Six Million, Seven Hundred and Fifty one Thousand, Six Hundred and Forty one Naira, Sixty Six Kobo) was paid in the first instalment and all efforts to get their balance were to no avail.

Mr Aboluwarin Olusegun and 34 others stated that Prestrest Ltd and 4 others failed to remit the contributory pension deducted from their salaries for 7 years and 7 months, from 2003 to 2010, totalling the sum of N9,000,000.00 (Nine Million Naira Only), and urged the Court to grant the reliefs sought.

However, the defendants- Prestrest Ltd and 4 others failed to defend the suit as they neither appeared nor filed any defence.

In a well-considered judgment, the presiding Judge, Justice Hassan Yakubu stated that the failure of the defendant to defend the case does not absolve Mr. Aboluwarin Olusegun and 34 others from proving their case to the satisfaction of the Court.

Justice Yakubu held that Mr Aboluwarin Olusegun and 34 others have made out a case for the grant of the reliefs sought and that Prestrest Ltd and 4 others are bound by the content of the agreement freely entered into in accordance with the rule of law.

The Court further stated that Prestrest Ltd and 4 others are mandated by the Pension Reform Act to remit the contributory pensions deducted for 7 years and 7 months from 2003 to 2010, from the salaries of Mr Aboluwarin Olusegun and 34 others, totalling the sum of N9,000.000.00 (Nine Million Naira Only) to the Claimants Retirement saving Account (RSA).

WHAT GOVERNOR ADELEKE IS DOING IN THE POWER SECTOR, DIGITAL ECONOMY, CLIMATE CHANGE, OTHERS – SPOKESPERSON

0

In response to suggestions and proposals from state leaders on the occasion of Osun at 33, the Spokesperson to the state Governor, Mallam Olawale Rasheed has shed some light on the policy agenda of the Governor on the power sector, digital economy, climate change among others.

Addressing journalists today at Osogbo, the Spokesperson explained that Governor Adeleke had taken proactive steps across the sectors by generating and adopting state policies in critical areas of importance to the development of a 21st century state economy.

He narrated that the Governor indeed broke new grounds by launching out the making of Osun state Electricity market policy and bill following the devolution of power generation and distribution to the concurrent legislative list of the 1999 constitution.

“Osun today has a draft legislation and policy framework for the power sector that will soon be submitted to the State House of Assembly for consideration and passage. The bill follows best practices and has passed through the state Ministry of Justice.

“The bill among others provides for the creation of a state electricity regulatory agency which will be performing the functions currently being done by the National Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC). The commission will license power producers and regulate activities of power distribution company like Ibadan Disco.

“The Commission will supervise off-grid and mini-grid power generation and also regulate relationships between power producers and distributors. The bill creates an electricity market system which will robustly transform the energy space of Osun state. So Mr Governor has acted long before now on the issue of the power sector.

“In the area of digital economy, Mr Governor has indeed placed Osun on the global digital map. Before Governor Adeleke’s assumption of office, Osun had no state policy on ICT. As at today, Osun has a robust policy now set for implementation under ICT professionals of over 30 years experience.

“Additionally, before now, Osun had no state tech innovation policy designed to stimulate the innovation sector to boost the emerging multi billion dollar global digital economy. Osun now has an STI policy which was adopted after a rigorous public consultation and validation process. The implementation has started.

“And when you talk of a robust state plan for integrated economic development, Mr Governor has an activated policy plan, focussed on transforming Osun from its civil service focus to an agro based industrialized economy. State investment summit that has gained acceptance of western diplomatic community is holding this year.

“The agro agenda is well on course as to be witnessed this Friday when Mr Governor will unveil new acquired tractors. This is the first time Osun acquired new tractors in the last 13 years. Throughout the 12 years of APC government, no single tractor was purchased.

“Permit me to add that Mr Governor has also fractured maintenance and other issues into account. In fact, Mr Governor is working to get a tractor assembly plant operational here in Osun state.

“On the climate agenda, Osun is working to finalize the state climate change agenda under a world class consultant.  A robust climate initiative is in the making to ensure Osun takes lead among subnational entities In Africa in the climate sector. Many materials in this line are online”, Mr Rasheed noted.

“On behalf of Mr Governor, many policy proposals from top citizens and leaders of the State are in tandem with ongoing programmes and policies of Mr Governor. Mr Governor is a policy addict in his own way with a high level of ambition in delivery of public service.

“For example, Governor Adeleke deeply believes in infrastructure upgrades to achieve economic revival. He always questions why our ancient towns are still largely underdeveloped, hence his idea of multi billion naira infra plan to strengthen the state’s socio and economic infrastructure.

“And to implement this plan, he also insisted on rigorous enforcement of local content policy. The implication is that the Osun fund is revolving within Osun and boosting the grassroots economy. Construction skills are being acquired, local technicians are being engaged and local suppliers are having good times.

“So the flyovers and dualised roads are not just fanciful projects. They are economic tools for economic development, trade, connectivity, tourism and cultural industry expansion. Mr Governor is a firm believer in the close link between good infrastructure and state economic development”, the Spokesperson told the journalists.

He concluded by declaring that at 33, Osun is on the path of sustainable development across the sectors.

Signed:

Mallam Olawale Rasheed,

Spokesperson to the State Governor.

NDDC Discusses Partnership With UN Agency

0

The Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC, says it is ready to partner with the United Nations Institute for Training and Research, UNITAR, to find solutions to the environmental challenges hampering the efforts to develop the Niger Delta region.

The NDDC Managing Director, Dr. Samuel Ogbuku, stated this during a courtesy visit by the team leader in the Strategy, Planning and Coordination Section of the United Nations Satellite Centre, UNOSAT, Mr. Olivier Van Damme, at the Commission’s headquarters in Port Harcourt.

Ogbuku, who was represented by the NDDC Executive Director, Projects, Sir Victor Antai, said it was a very auspicious time to work with UNITAR, which had the required capacity in the training and empowerment to tackle environmental challenges.

In a statement on Wednesday by Director, Corporate Affairs, Seledi Thompson-Wakama noted that Ogbuku urged the UN Satellite Centre hosted at the UNITAR to proffer long-term solutions to environmental challenges such as flooding facing the Niger Delta region because temporary solutions were not sustainable.

“We are ready for partnership in finding a lasting solution to the perennial flood in our region, noting that solving the flood challenges of the Niger Delta region could not be addressed by the NDDC alone as it called for collaboration between the Commission and other development agencies.

“At NDDC, our focus is not just on building physical infrastructures but also developing human capital and protecting our environment.” he said.

Also speaking, the UNOSAT technical team leader, Mr. Olivies Van Damme, said that the mission of the UN Satellite Centre was to promote evidence-based decision making for peace, security and resilience, using geo-spatial information technologies.

He said: “We are engaged in environmental conservation including flood management. We are focused on developing capacity. We work with our partners to offer Artificial Intelligence- enhanced flood monitoring systems.”

“We support governmental, non-governmental and international organisations in enhancing their capacities by offering customised learning solutions that fit their respective needs.”

In his own remarks, the NDDC Director, Environmental Control and Protection, Engr. Onuoha Obeka, said that the Commission was continually looking for ways to enhance the development process in the Niger Delta region, noting: “We want to be able to use data to foresee disaster and plan to mitigate the effects. A collaboration with UNITAR will also help us to train NDDC staff in that critical area.”

Obeka said that a collaboration with UNITAR would help the NDDC to integrate and analyse geospatial information in a comprehensible and easy to use format, to strengthen disaster and climate resilience, as well as support sustainable development policies.

“The dream of a state that could stand tall and independent within the Nigerian federation became a reality”: Adeleke Celebrates Osun’s state 33 Years Anniversary

0

Dear citizens of Osun State.

I am filled with immense pride and joy as I address you on the 33rd anniversary of the creation of our beloved Osun State. Today, we stand united in celebration of a journey that began three decades ago, a journey marked by determination, resilience, and a strong belief in our collective future.

On this day in 1991, our dream of having a state that we could call our own was realized. The creation of Osun State was a testament to the power of unity and the unwavering spirit of our people. It was the result of years of advocacy, sacrifice, and the courageous efforts of our founding fathers, who fought tirelessly for the recognition of our unique identity and aspirations.

Going down the memory lane, the struggle for the creation of Osun State started as early as 1950”s with a series of commissions of inquiry in the old Oyo State. And on August 27th, 1991, our state was carved out as a distinct entity from the old Oyo State with a vision for progress, unity, and prosperity.

33 years ago, the dream of a state that could stand tall and independent within the Nigerian federation became a reality. The creation of Osun State in 1991 was not merely a political event, but the fulfillment of the hopes and aspirations of our people. It was the result of years of unwavering commitment and sacrifice by those who believed that our unique cultural heritage, resources, and potential deserved recognition and development.

My dear people of Osun State, today marks a significant milestone in the history of our great state, a day of pride, reflection, and celebration for every son and daughter of this great land. Our state’s creation was a culmination of the aspirations and struggles of our people. The vision is the pathway and the guiding light into the future. This was what the founding fathers and the agitators for the creation of a state to be named “Osun” had in mind and did everything possible to realize the vision.

Today, we remember and honor those who championed the creation of Osun State, their labor was not in vain. They fought tirelessly, not for themselves, but for the future generation yet unborn. Their sacrifices remain the foundation upon which we stand today.

To these heroes, we owe our deepest gratitude and we are forever grateful to their resolve, advocating for a state where the voices of our people could be heard and their potentials fully harnessed.

We owe loads of gratitude to our founding royal fathers, politicians and activists such as the late Ooni of ife, Oba Okunade Sijuwade, late Ataoja of Osogbo, Oba Oyewale Matanmi, late Orangun of Ila, Oba William Ayeni, Ariwajoye ii, and other prominent traditional rulers to mention a few that played a significant roles in the creation of the State.

The history will not be complete without mentioning some politicians and activists who  fought tooth and nails to ensure successful creation of Osun State such as late Chief Bola Ige; late Senator Mojisoluwa Akinfenwa; my father, late Senator Raji Adeleke; Pa Samson Adeola Siyanbola; Chief Kolawole Balogun; Chief Aiyelaagbe Laogun; Professor Olu Aina; Alhaji Rasheed Igbalaye; Chief Bisi Akande; Dr. Olu Alabi; Alhaji Tunde Badmus (TUNS); Chief  Gunju Adesakin; Hon. Jonathan O. Awofisayo; General Alani Akinrinade; Engineer Tunde Ponle; late Senator Isiaka Adetunji Adeleke; and other prominent sons and daughters of the state, dead or alive.  They are all honored and remembered. May their good work continue to live after them.

Good people of the State, in the 33 years since our state’s creation, we have faced both triumphs and challenges, but we have also made significant strides. Our state has grown in leaps and bounds, and we have every reason to be proud of our achievements. From the development of our infrastructure to the empowerment of our youth, from the preservation of our rich cultural heritage to the promotion of peace and security, Osun State has continued to evolve, becoming a model for other states in the Federation.

We have seen progress in education sector with renovation of schools across the State; expansion of healthcare access with complete renovation of 332 Primary Health Care Centers; infrastructure growth across the state with modern flyover across our urban centers; renewed attention to development of digital economy; transitioning to an agro industrialized economy;  workers’ centered public service reform; revival of the agric sector; development of state energy legal and policy infrastructure; active support for students’ population; harnessing of state cultural and entertainment assets; integrated approach to youth development; refocusing of attention on sports development; empowerment of small businesses, cooperatives and artisans with operating funds; enforcement of local content in state governance; and ongoing payment of billions of naira in pension and half salary debt.

As we celebrate the birth of Osun State today, we must also look to the future with renewed determination, as the work of building a greater Osun is ongoing. It is a responsibility we all share. We must continue to pursue development with vigour and passion, ensuring that every citizen of this state benefits from the fruits of our labour.

Dear good people of Osun State, as we celebrate our past, we must also look to the future. The journey ahead requires that we continue to work together irrespective of political affiliation in the spirit of unity and purpose that has brought us this far. Our challenges are not insurmountable; they are opportunities for us to demonstrate our resilience, our innovation, and our commitment to building a prosperous state for all.

My fellow citizens, as we mark this 33rd anniversary, let us renew our pledge to contribute to the development of our state. Let us embrace the values of hard work, integrity, and community that have defined us as a people. Together, we can ensure that the Osun of tomorrow is even greater than the Osun of today.

As your Governor, I am committed to leading this charge with transparency, dedication, and accountability.  As we all know that governance is a collective responsibility, I call on all of you—our traditional rulers, religious leaders, civil servants, artisans, farmers, and entrepreneurs—to continue to play your part in the development of our state. Together, we can make Osun a model of excellence and progress.

Today, let us renew our commitment to the vision that inspired the creation of Osun State. Let us continue to work towards a future where every citizen can thrive, where opportunities abound, and where the legacy of our founding fathers remains strong.

In the face of challenges, we must remain steadfast. Together, we can overcome any obstacle that stands in our way. Our strength lies in our unity, our diversity, and our shared vision for a prosperous and peaceful Osun State.

On this 33rd anniversary, I ask that we all take a moment to reflect on the journey so far and to recommit ourselves to the ideals of our founding fathers. Osun State is our home, and it is our collective duty to ensure it continues to thrive.

In closing, I extend my heartfelt gratitude to every citizen of Osun State. Your support, your contributions, and your unwavering belief in the potential of our state have been the driving force behind our progress. Let us continue to walk this path together, hand in hand, towards a brighter and more prosperous future.

Thank you for your continued support of our government.

Happy Anniversary to us all.

May God bless Osun State, and may God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Thank you.

Supreme Court Judgement Triumph Of Truth – Diri

0

Governor of Bayelsa State, Senator Douye Diri, has described Friday’s judgement of the Supreme Court, which affirmed his victory in the November 11, 2023 governorship election, as the triumph of truth over falsehood and evil.

Speaking in Abuja after the apex court gave its verdict, Governor Diri said the victory was not for him or his deputy alone but also for people of the state whose choice was validated by the courts.

A statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Daniel Alabrah, quoted the governor as saying that his victories at the courts have renewed his hope in the judiciary and in democracy.

He said no matter the level of hardship in the country, the forthrightness of the judiciary has given him assurance that there is light at the end of the tunnel, and called on Nigerians to be hopeful for a better country.

Speaking on what people of the state should expect in his second term, Governor Diri said his administration had started well and that it will consolidate on the gains so far made and even introduce new programmes and policies that will benefit the people.

He said: “This victory is not for me. It is not for the deputy governor. It is for the people of the state.

“We have started on a good ground and we will not disappoint our people. We will even introduce new programmes that will benefit our people.

“From the election and the tribunal to the Supreme Court, we won four-zero. This is the triumph of truth over falsehood and evil. There is hope for democracy in Nigeria.”
