How EndBadGovernance Protest Cost DSS, NIA Bosses Their Jobs

0

Why we celebrated Bichi’s exit – DSS officers

The reasons the immediate past Director-General of the Department of State Services, Yusuf Bichi, and the DG of the National Intelligence Agency, Ahmed Abubakar, resigned from their positions have been revealed.

Sources within the Presidency told Saturday PUNCH that President Bola Tinubu and the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, questioned the intelligence gathering mechanisms of the two agencies following the violent nature of the #EndBadGovernance protests in some northern states and the seizure of three presidential aircraft in France.

While Bichi was held responsible for lack of functional intelligence on the protest, Abubakar was reportedly queried for the NIA’s inability to have reports ahead of the seizure of the jets by a Chinese company, Zhongshan Fucheng Industrial Investment Co. Limited.

A French court had sanctioned the seizure of three Nigerian presidential jets, including a newly purchased Airbus, amid a legal dispute between Zhongshan and the Ogun State Government.

The #EndBadGovernance protest, which began on August 1, turned violent in Kano, Gombe, Yobe, Borno and Bauchi states while demonstrations in the South-West were peaceful.

During the protests in some northern states, public and private facilities were destroyed, while hoodlums looted shops and caused mayhem. This led to the imposition of curfews in Kano, Bauchi, and Plateau states.

The protest was driven by widespread hardship resulting from the removal of fuel subsidy, electricity tariff hike and the high cost of living, among other issues.

Bichi, who hails from Kano State, where widespread destruction and looting occurred, was appointed on September 14, 2018, by former President Muhammadu Buhari.

Abubakar, from Katsina State, was also appointed by Buhari on January 10, 2018.

According to credible sources, Tinubu and Ribadu were embarrassed by the turn of events on the seizure of the presidential jets and the #EndBadGovernance demonstrations.

“The seizure of the presidential jets and violent nature of the #EndBadGovernance protest embarrassed the President nationally and internationally.

“The President was displeased with the NIA and DSS bosses. This was why he requested the resignation of the two security chiefs,” said one of the sources.

Another source told Saturday PUNCH that Bichi and Ribadu had been having a running battle before the protest, with the fallout from the northern demonstrations serving as the final straw.

He stated, “The former DSS DG and the NSA boss had been on bad terms for some time. Their issues escalated to the point that Bichi was unable to meet the President for a while. The Presidency finally had a valid reason to dismiss him due to the #EndBadGovernance protest.”

Abubakar announced his resignation on Saturday, August 24, after meeting with President Tinubu.

In contrast, Bichi’s resignation was announced in a statement by the President’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale, on Monday, August 26.

Why we celebrated Bichi’s exit – DSS officers

Bichi’s resignation elicited reactions from DSS staff and the public.

Some DSS officers, who spoke to Saturday PUNCH on condition of anonymity, described his exit as ‘freedom from unprofessionalism’.

The DSS officers listed Bichi’s alleged misconduct to include undue interference in the service’s operations by his wife and son, Yusuf Bichi.

A video of some DSS staff members allegedly celebrating Bichi’s resignation surfaced online immediately after his departure.

However, an X user, Sanusi Jibrin, said the clip was recorded at the Kogi State DSS office, where personnel were celebrating Ajayi’s appointment, as he was a former director at the state command.

A DSS officer, however, said personnel of the agency were happy with his removal.

“We believed his regime was a punishment for us. He impeded the career advancement of many officers by extending the service years of those due to retire. Some senior officers, who were due for retirement in 2021 and 2022 were retained in the service,” he stated.

Another officer alleged that Bichi was indifferent to the welfare of workers.

“The Federal Government increased our salary by 40 per cent, but there was no implementation. We were earning more than the police before, but the police are now earning more than us because they implemented their 40 per cent increment. However, there was a proposal to increase our salary by 25 per cent this year, but it has yet to be realised,” the officer said.

Speaking on the recruitment of personnel, another secret agent described Bichi’s recruitment as nepotistic.

“Bichi’s recruitments were arbitrary and lopsided. Three different training sessions have been conducted for some people we didn’t know when they were recruited this year alone. Most of the newly recruited personnel are northerners.

“His first recruitment in 2019 brought in either 420 or 450 persons from Bichi Local Government Area in Kano alone. In the history of the service, 450 was the maximum recruitment we ever had before Bichi, but he recruited 1,000 personnel at once.

“There was no southerner among the national directors and deputy directors at the headquarters until January this year when he was directed by the Presidency following a petition. His wife is another issue; she abused her husband’s office. His son, too, was power drunk.

“Just two weeks ago, his wife slapped a DSS director in a northern state. She also slapped at least two deputy directors at airports.”

Tweeps also criticised the former DSS boss, accusing him of allowing his family to abuse power because of his position.

The publisher of Daily Nigerian, Jafaar Jafaar, while commenting on X, said Bichi turned the DSS into a “graveyard of career aspirations.”

“He lowered the recruitment bar, removed the multi-layer screening process to recruit personnel who couldn’t even pass the Halogen Security aptitude test. Bichi arguably recruited the highest number of Cotonou ‘graduates’ into the service. He wilfully extended the tenure of some retired directors in his good book for years, killing the ambitions of the aspiring directors. He allowed his wife to lord over the service, influencing recruitment, promotion and discipline,” he stated.

Court Freezes 13 Bank Accounts Linked To Suspected Terrorist, Henry Okocha

0

A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja on Friday issued an order to freeze 13 bank accounts linked to a suspected terrorist, Henry Okocha.

Justice Peter Lifu issued the order following an ex-parte application filed before the court by the Department of State Services, represented by its counsel, Yunus Umar.

The ex-parte application, marked FHC/ABJ/CS/1036/2024, was brought under sections 5 and 81 of the Terrorism Prevention and Prohibition Act 2022.

In an 8-paragraph affidavit supporting the ex-parte motion, the DSS informed the court that the defendant had received substantial sums of money, amounting to millions of naira, in the accounts, and these funds were suspected to be proceeds of terrorism.

Umar requested the court to grant an order for the agency to freeze Okocha’s accounts for 90 days to allow for a thorough forensic investigation into his alleged acts of terrorism.

The DSS counsel argued that freezing the accounts would enable the agency to identify the perpetrators and bring them to justice.

The banks where the accounts are domiciled include First Bank of Nigeria, Guaranty Trust Bank, United Bank for Africa, Union Bank of Nigeria, Providus Bank, Palmpay Limited, and Resolut Limited.

In his ruling, Justice Lifu granted the DSS’s request to freeze the bank accounts but reduced the period to 60 days instead of the requested 90 days for the investigation.

He ruled that the accounts, which are domiciled in seven different banks, would remain “frozen for 60 days to enable the applicant to conduct the necessary forensic investigations into the alleged acts of terrorism by the defendant.”

The DSS confirmed that Okocha had been taken into custody following his arrest for investigation.

Buying Presidential Jet While Nigerians Go Hungry Is Failue – Donald Duke

0

Former Cross River State governor, Donald Duke, on Friday said it’s leadership failure for President Bola Tinubu to acquire a new presidential jet while Nigerians are hungry.

Last week, Tinubu’s senior aide, Bayo Onanuga, had confirmed the arrival of a new presidential jet for the Nigerian president.

Onanuga said Nigeria procured an Airbus A330 to replace the 19-year-old Boeing B737-700 acquired under former President Olusegun Obasanjo.

But, Duke said the move should be considered as a “leadership failure” due to the current economic condition of Nigerians.

Featuring on Channels TV Inside Sources anchored by Laolu Akande, Duke said: “There is no glamour in saying your people are going through hard times; it is a failure of your leadership. If I am the head of a family, I want my family to have everything. I don’t want life to be difficult for them.

“If life is difficult, then I feel I have failed to provide for them or do the things I ought to have done. I would ask him (Tinubu) to see the Nigerian nation as his family. What is good for his family is good for the nation.

“Buying a new aircraft or yacht or living large is a failure. You can’t have kids who are hungry and you are living lavishly, going to parties and wearing the biggest agbada.”

An employee of a handling company at the Malam Aminu Kano International Airport, Kano, Auwalu Ahmed Dankade, who returned $10,000 he found while cleaning an aircraft, has said that his motivation is to please Allah.

The sum, equivalent of approximately N15m, was found on Wednesday afternoon in an Egyptian aircraft, and Dankade immediately reported the discovery to his company manager, leading to the identification and return of the money to its owner.

In a telephone interview with Daily Trust, Dankade said, “I have been trained not to take what does not belong to me. Anything you take unlawfully, you will be held accountable for in the hereafter.

0

Aradel Holdings Plc, an indigenous energy company, through its subsidiary, Aradel Energy Limited, has signed a sale and purchase agreement to acquire the 100 per cent interest in the Olo and Olo West marginal fields from TotalEnergies EP Nigeria and the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited.

The Olo and Olo West Fields were formerly part of OML 58.

The acquisition was completed for a consideration of $16m plus $3.5m of deferred and conditional payments.

In a statement on Thursday, Aradel said the Petroleum Mining Lease (for Olo) and Petroleum Prospecting License (for Olo West) will be issued after the payment of relevant ministerial consent fees and completion of approved field development plans within designated timeframes.

“The addition of Olo and Olo West marginal fields to Aradel’s portfolio of assets is a significant inorganic growth milestone in furtherance of Aradel’s vision and long-term strategy to provide sustainable energy solutions that support economic growth,” Aradel’s Chief Executive Officer/Managing Director, Adegbite Falade, said.

Falade said the acquisition of the marginal fields is a major step in our journey of promoting energy security in Nigeria through organic and inorganic growth.

“We want to commend the unwavering commitment of the Ministers of Petroleum Resources, and our regulator – the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission in supporting this acquisition, within the framework of the Petroleum Industry Act.

“We also want to commend the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited and TotalEnergies for their commitment to grow Nigeria’s oil and gas production, even from marginal fields,” the CEO stated.

Olo and Olo West Fields are located within former OML 58, in the Eastern Niger Delta, 80 kilometres northwest of Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

A marginal field is any field that has been discovered and has been left unattended for not less than 10 years, from the date of first discovery of such a field.

Cement Sellers Frustrated BUA From Selling At N3500 Per Bag – Rabiu

0

AbdulSamad Rabiu, the Chairman of BUA Cement, has said the intention of his company to sell cement at N3,500 in 2023 was frustrated by the actions of cement dealers.

Rabiu said BUA sold over a million tons of cement to dealers at N3,500 per bag, intending for these to be transferred to the end-users.

Speaking in Abuja, Rabiu noted that the dealers were selling each bag of cement to consumers for prices ranging from N7,000 to N8,000.

He mentioned that the company needed to discontinue the policy since its involvement was not intended to support dealers financially.

He mentioned that BUA Cement was unable to regulate the dealers who, he claimed, were earning substantial profits due to the high margins, as the company lacked influence over pricing in the open market.

He said, “So, a lot of the dealers took advantage of that policy. Rather than pass the low prices to the customers, they were selling at even double the price we sold to them.

Some were selling at N7, 000 and 8 000 per bag. They made a lot of money with a very high margin. I think we had sold more than a million tons at N3,500 before we realised what the dealers were doing.

“And then, because of the issues that Nigeria faced at the time about devaluation of the Naira last year and the removal of fuel subsidy, we could not continue that policy.

We wanted that price to stay at that level but dealers refused. So, we could not sustain that simply because we did not want to be in a situation where we are subsidizing dealers.

“I’m referring to the point when the foreign exchange rate moved from about N600 to maybe N1,800 to the US Dollar. So, it became even more challenging and more difficult for us to actually sustain that price policy.”

The final details for Osimhen ‘s farewell to Napoli are still missing . The deal that would bring the Nigerian to Al Ahli is in the final stages , with the agreements being finalized.

4-year contract at around 40 million per season for Victor Osimhen at Al Ahli. It will also include a release clause.

Napoli are instead expected to receive around 80 million with the signatures of the contracts that are expected in the morning. In the end, there was no shortage of offers for Oshimen, including that of Chelsea until late at night but with proposed salary figures lower than those in place in Naples. The player has decided to go where they wanted him most.

For Osimhen it is a win-win operation, Al Ahli was the only team among the many offers received in recent months to satisfy him from all points of view. The possibility of a return to Europe in the future also remains open, a possibility that is fundamental for the player and better than this it was difficult to obtain in a downward international market.

NIPR President Advocates Multi Stakeholders Approach to Tackle Fake News

0

The President and Chairman of Governing Council of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR) has called for a synergy among critical stakeholders to curb spread of fake news in the society.

Speaking on Thursday at the UN House Abuja during the premiere of “When Wolves Cry”, a pan-African movie project that is aimed to address the challenge fake news on the continent, Dr. Neliaku said the multiplicity of platforms through which fake news are shared has made it difficult for a single body to fight it.

“It is no longer for one person or organisation to handle. It is a responsibility that is now before all of us. Fake news has a brother, which is disinformation, it has a sister, misinformation and a cousin, which is propaganda. We must fight all these together with the needed energy and it is everybody’s responsibility to do so at this material point in time”, he stated.

The NIPR boss while cautioning that responsible communication must be deeply imbibed, urged that individuals should avoid utterances that they would not take responsibility for.

While commending the producer/director, Eyaba Emmanuel and his team for embarking on the project, the NIPR boss also called on relevant agencies, including the UNESCO to embark on capacity building for journalists, which will help in curbing the spread of fake news.
