YELLOW FEVER: Avoid mosquitoes, get vaccinated

0

As the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, NCDC, confirms outbreak of Yellow fever in Ebonyi state, Nigerians have been advised to prevent mosquito bites as well as get vaccinated against the disease.

As at last count, no fewer than 20 deaths have been recorded in Izzi LGA, Ebonyi State, according to the NCDC, indicating that the outbreak may have been going on for a few months undetected by local health authorities.

Yellow fever is a serious disease caused by the yellow fever virus. It is spread through the bite of an infected Aedes aegypti mosquito species.  Although, there is no human-to-human transmission of the virus, however, the disease is completely vaccine-preventable with a single shot providing immunity for a lifetime.  Sadly, many people are not vaccinated against the killer disease.

According to the Director-General of the NCDC, Dr. Chikwe Ihekweazu, there is need for Nigerians to keep their environments clean and free of stagnant water to discourage the breeding of mosquitoes.

He further counselled that the public should also make use of insecticide-treated mosquito nets, screens on windows and doors to prevent mosquito bites.

Continuing, he advised Nigerians to also get vaccinated at the Primary Healthcare Centres, PHCs, for free.

A community leader, Chief Joel Asobari, who denied that the community was harbouring oil thieves, said: “We were in our house when JTF came with one gunboat and another speedboat.

The town were loaded with armed soldiers. “When they came, they said the residents should vacate the community, that they want to burn down the houses.

They went into action without listening to our pleas and they rendered us homeless. “We pleaded with them; the next thing we saw was that they started burning house and they molested me.

They shot one Mr. Sunday Aniete Bassey, a fisherman from Akwa Ibom State. “We are begging the government to come to our aid. We are now without clothes and homeless. When it rains, it beats us.

”The only school we built was burnt to ashes, now our children have no school again.

We want the government to intervene and help us out.” Asobari wondered why the military would sack the entire community for a crime the people did not commit. They attacked me, razed my home—Mrs. Gloria

In addition, a woman simply identified as Madam Gloria, expressed shock that soldiers burnt her house and wares, including crayfish, despite her pleas. Gloria said: “I have stayed here for about 15 years; we are into fishing. I also run a bar in this village.

On that day, as I was coming back from fishing, I saw a gunboat. I asked them what the problem was, they beat me up and asked me to pack my things and leave the community. “As I started packing my things, they entered and set everything ablaze. I am a fisherwoman. They burnt everything I use for fishing and they destroyed all my crayfish. I do not have house again.”

Congo may join Nigeria as Africa’s largest oil producers

0

Republic of Congo could produce nearly 1 million barrels of crude per day following a new oil discovery in the country, a company involved told Reuters on Monday. The find could possibly quadruple the nation’s output and propel it into the same league as Africa’s largest producers.

Production, which will be ramped up in phases, could begin in six months. If it reaches expected levels, Congo’s production would be close to Nigeria, which produces about 1.8 million barrels a day, and Angola, at around 1.4 million.

Congo’s cash-strapped energy industry has been boosted by major recent finds from Italy’s ENI and France’s Total, lifting an economy hobbled by debt, civil unrest and corruption, and raising output to about 350,000 barrels per day. Production from the new field, developed by SARPD-OIL in la Cuvette region, could dwarf that, said the company’s marketing director Mohamed Rahmani. A government spokesman did not immediately comment on the discovery, Reuters reported. SARPD estimates the field holds 1 billion cubic metres of hydrocarbons, including 359 million barrels of oil, with a potential for daily output of 983,000 barrels, Rahmani said. That, the company reckons, could bring in $10.5 billion a year into Congo, doubling the Central African country’s GDP.
