As several African nations continue to grapple with economic instability, many have turned to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for financial assistance, resulting in significant debt obligations.

These loans, while intended to stabilize economies, often come with stringent conditions that can hinder long-term development.

The latest data, updated on December 23, 2024, reveals the African countries with the highest outstanding IMF credit.

Egypt tops the list with a staggering $9.3 billion, far exceeding other nations. Kenya follows with $3.02 billion, while Angola is close behind with $2.9 billion. Côte d’Ivoire has climbed to the fourth position with $2.75 billion, overtaking Ghana, which now ranks fifth with $2.51 billion.

Other nations on the list include the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) with $1.6 billion, Ethiopia with $1.31 billion, and South Africa with $1.14 billion.

Cameroon ranks ninth with $1.13 billion, and Morocco joins the top 10 with $1.1 billion, replacing Senegal, which has dropped off the list, information on Business Insider Africa revealed.

The reliance on IMF loans has sparked concerns about the long-term implications for these economies.

Additionally, the restrictive economic reforms tied to these loans, known as Structural Adjustment Programs (SAPs), have been criticized for exacerbating socioeconomic inequalities.

As African nations remain vulnerable to external shocks, such as fluctuations in commodity prices and global financial crises, the growing debt burden underscores the need for more sustainable financial solutions.

The IMF’s role in the region continues to be a subject of intense debate, with questions lingering over whether its assistance helps or hinders long-term economic stability.

1. Egypt1. Egypt – 9,305,675,014
2. Kenya – 3,022,009,900

CSO Group On Education Tips Prof. Aisha Maikudi For UniAbuja VC, Asks Security Agencies To Investigate Attempts To Cause Chaos

0

BEING THE REPORT OF THE CIVIL SOCIETY COALITION FOR EDUCATIONAL DEVELOPMENT OVER THE APPOINTMENT OF A SUBSTANTIVE VICE CHANCELLOR FOR UNIVERSITY OF ABUJA AND THE ENSUING ABSURDITY OF PROTEST , CAMPAIGN OF CALUMNY AND OBVIOUS GANGUP AGAINST YOUTH AND WOMEN IN LEADERSHIP.

The twenty five member Civil Society Coalition for Educational Development after painstaking interrogations, independent investigations and review of the leadership crisis that have engulfed the University of Abuja over the jostle for the position of Vice Chancellor, wishes to present our report and recommendations to the public as already sent to the honorable minister of education for immediate action.

We wish to express our deepest disappointment that the almost recurrent chaotic selection process of Vice Chancellor in the university of Abuja has roared its ugly presence this time again. It will be recalled that the same scenario played out during the appointment of the erstwhile Vice Chancellor, Prof Adelabu which our recommendation to the then minister of education saved the situation and restored peace to the institution. We recall also with nostalgia, our role in the appointment of the immediate past Vice Chancellor, Prof Abdulrasheed Na’Allah, we are therefore bold to state unequivocally that we are familiar with the trend of leadership selection succession in the citadel of learning in also two decades now and have adopted same method for the current crisis being orchestrated by a political vested interest among the ranks of professors in the institution.

We wish to begin by expressing unequivocally, our frustration and disappointment over the recent protest by professors from University of Abuja over the appointment of a substantive Vice Chancellor in the institution, describing it as absurdity and a direct attack on due process, betrayal of their experience and direct assault on the globally demanded agenda to have more women and youths in leadership.

This group under the aegis of Civil Society Coalition for Educational Development states that the protest that took place was a sponsored exercise by individuals who have vested interest in the system and are resistant to change.

After our careful investigation, our intel reveal that the protest was sponsored and engineered by vested interests for nefarious intentions and not out of genuine concerns to reposition the sector, we wonder why highly educated and knowledgeable individuals will allow themselves to be used for sinister purposes. Although we have written a demand to the Nigerian Police to swing into action by investigating and prosecuting certain names who attempted to bring in the CSOs to caus chaos and crisis to paint the Vice Chancellor in bad light before the unsuspecting public.

We observed with incontrovertible evidence that the entire protest is about orchestrated plan to discredit Prof. Aisha Maikudi, the acting Vice Chancellor who had previously served as Deputy Vice Chancellor without any record of failure or non qualification, the desperation to pull her down because she is a woman, a youth and a northerner is antithetical to the development of education in Nigeria, especially at a time the global attention is on harnessing the numerous potentials of young people, especially women to boost growth.

“In a long time, Nigerians have not seen professors involving in such a vexatious and demeaning absurdity, just to satisfy certain quarters that believe it is their exclusive right to decide what happens in the educational system. This act in academic circle is preposterous and requires to be nipped in the bud by ensuring that punishments are handed on those involved in the dance of shame.

The antecedents of leadership selection in the university of Abuja suggest that many have been victims of such satanic manipulation which eventually denied them their rights to be at the very top echelon of their careers, hence the need to step in and ensure a competent hand is not denied her opportunity to bring greatness to the institution.

After looking dispassionately at the allegations, we discovered that the claim that southerners were not included in the selecting committee was untrue and a desperate attempt to discredit the process, acting the script of their sponsors.

“The council members from the South West and South East are acting a script and this must be clearly spelt out. Their grouse is that they were given assignments that would prevent them from serving on the selection board.

‘’Prof. Ralph Akinfeleye and Mrs. Chisom Dorcas Obih have no right, as Council members of the university to decide which assignment suits them, unless they have interests they are yet to tell the academic community and indeed Nigerians.

“Again, how many times have professors staged a protest against the appointment of another professor as VC?  Why was the appointment of Professor Aisha Mekudi as Deputy Vice Chancellor not challenged if qualification is indeed the issue? Why was her appointment as the Acting Vice Chancellor not challenged or is the qualification for acting VC different? Why is it now that a productive younger female professor is involved that her colleagues have remembered that they have a protesting skill to display. This is  pettiness taken too far as stakeholders in this sector, we must urge the Honourable Minister of Education not to bow to pressure from these anti-development quarters.

We find the qualification allegation very strange, unbelievable and distracting. This is so because Prof Aisha Mekudi has served meritoriously as a Deputy Vice Chancellor, a position that has almost equal qualifications as Vice Chancellor yet not challenged by anyone then, the same person here is also the current Acting Vice Chancellor, it is therefore baffling that same person who is a sitting Vice Chancellor in acting capacity could suddenly become unqualified for a position she’s still holding.

Reading on the news that a certain person who has been a professor for 16 years and a woman at that was among those raising dust on issues of marginalization is most unfortunate. For her, a younger, more agile and creative professor should not sit as the Vice Chancellor while she is there.

We also hold that there is no law restricting job-seekers from being interviewed on holidays. Their argument that the process of inauguration of selection committee and schedule of interview is rushed does not hold water as every stakeholder involved has been duly notified on dates for each activities, according to our findings.

OUR RECOMMENDATION

1. We hold very strongly and in unmistakable term that Prof Aisha Mekudi among all the applicants for the job of Vice Chancellor of the University of Abuja is the most qualified and the closest person to the job and should be immediately announced as substantive Vice Chancellor having served as Deputy Vice Chancellor of the Institution and currently acting Vice Chancellor of the same school

2. We demand that President Bola Tinubu through the honorable Minister of Education wade into the ensuing crisis and give needed protection for the acting Vice Chancellor who is obviously a victim of ethnic gangup, political orchestration and desperate power mongers in the University of Abuja, to stop those who are desperately attempting to ridicule his efforts in getting youths and women involved in leadership, maintaining that women have so much to offer in raising the bar of national development.

3. We demand that the Nigeria Police invite trouble makers as espoused in our petition to the force to serve as deterrent to others.

4. We demand that the Minister after announcing Prof Aisha Mekudi as recommended by us, should set up a truth and reconciliation panel for post VC tussle era

Thank you,

Dr Wisdom Ohalete Chinedu,

The Council lauds Ganduje’s visionary leadership, unwavering dedication, and commitment to progress, which have not only reshaped Kano State but have also inspired generations across the nation.

In a goodwill message signed by National Director General of the Council, Dr. Seyi Bamigbade, he said as Governor of Kano State from 2015, Ganduje prioritized sustainable development and spearheaded impactful reforms that continue to benefit the people of Kano State.

His efforts he added have earned him widespread recognition and numerous accolades.

NLC Hails Dangote Refinery For Fuel Price Cut

0

The Nigeria Labour Congress has commended Dangote Refinery for its recent reduction in fuel prices, describing it as a timely economic relief for Nigerians.

Speaking with journalists on Tuesday, Funmi Sessi, the NLC Chairman for Lagos Council, noted that the refinery’s operation has come at the right time.

Sessi expressed optimism that the price cut would ease transportation costs, lower the prices of goods and services, and provide financial relief to citizens struggling with the high cost of living.

“This adjustment promises to offer much-needed relief for millions of Nigerians who have been grappling with high fuel prices and the rising cost of living,” Sessi said.

“If not for Dangote Refinery, we believe the government would still be importing fuel. However, Dangote is now producing about 650,000 barrels per day, while the Port Harcourt refinery and another refurbished refinery together produce about 210,000 barrels per day, which is not even half of Dangote’s output.”

With this, Dangote has introduced healthy competition in the sector, and we are already seeing a reduction in petroleum prices. Dangote has even started exporting petroleum to countries such as Ghana, Togo, and others. This will help stabilise our currency.”

In this instance, we want to give credit to Dangote. We also appreciate its timely intervention,” she added.

The NLC Lagos Council Chairman also noted that the National Assembly “is working on a bill to encourage the domestic use of our currency. It is disheartening that our currency is no longer strong, even within the West African region.”

“Therefore, the government should encourage Dangote and other players to enter the market as this will foster healthy competition.”

“We welcome this relief, which will help many Nigerians struggling due to the high cost of living, and we urge other stakeholders to follow the example set by the Dangote Group for the benefit of all Nigerians.”

On the proposed 2025 budget, Sessi said that if the Federal Government strictly implements it, there is hope for the nation’s economic revival.

“With the budget, there is hope for Nigeria. Especially if the government is strict in its implementation, we will see improvements in security, food production, and other areas,” she concluded.

Drug Lord Fabio Ochoa Walks Free In Colombia After 20 Years In US Prisons

Drug lord Fabio Ochoa walks free in Colombia after 20 years in US prisons

One of Colombia’s infamous drug lords and a key operator of the Medellin cartel has been deported back to the South American country, after serving 25 years of a 30-year prison sentence in the United States.

A short while later, Fabio Ochoa was again a free man.

Ochoa arrived in Bogota’s El Dorado airport on a deportation flight on Monday, wearing a gray sweatshirt and carrying his personal belongings in a plastic bag. After stepping out of the plane, the former cartel boss was met by immigration officials in bullet proof vests. There were no police on site to detain him.

Colombia’s national immigration agency promptly posted a brief statement on the social media platform X, saying Ochoa was “freed so that he could join his family” after immigration officials took his fingerprints and confirmed through a database that he is not wanted by Colombian authorities.

Ochoa, 67, and his older brothers amassed a fortune when cocaine started flooding the US in the late 1970s and early 1980s, according to US authorities, to the point that in 1987 they were included in Forbes magazine’s list of billionaires.

Living in Miami, Ochoa ran a distribution center for the cocaine cartel once headed by Pablo Escobar. Escobar died in a shootout with authorities in Medellin in 1993.

Coca fields are seen in Tibu municipality, Norte de Santander department, Colombia, on October 29, 2022. – “The government is persecuting us”, deplores one of the more than a thousand coca growers gathered on the Colombian-Venezuelan border. AFP listened to their claims in the face of the new leftist government headed by the world’s largest cocaine producer. “Because we are coca leaf collectors, they brand us as guerrillas, as drug traffickers, as criminals”, complains Alexander Contreras (36), an expert scraper or stripper of the plant, which is the raw material for cocaine.

Ochoa was first indicted in the US for his alleged role in the 1986 killing of Barry Seal, an American pilot who flew cocaine flights for the Medellin cartel, but became an informant for the Drug Enforcement Administration.

Along with his two older brothers, Juan David and Jorge Luis, Ochoa turned himself in to Colombian authorities in the early 1990s under a deal in which they avoided being extradited to the US.

The three brothers were released from prison in 1996, but Ochoa was arrested again three years later for drug trafficking and was extradited to the US in 2001 in response to an indictment in Miami naming him and more than 40 people as part of a drug smuggling conspiracy.

He was the only suspect in that group who opted to go to trial, resulting in his conviction and a 30-year sentence. The other defendants got much lighter prison terms because most of them cooperated with the government.

Ochoa’s name has faded from popular memory as Mexican drug traffickers take center stage in the global drug trade.

But the former member of the Medellin cartel was recently depicted in the Netflix series “Griselda,” where he first fights the plucky businesswoman Griselda Blanco for control of Miami’s cocaine market, and then makes an alliance with the drug trafficker, played by Sofia Vergara.

Ochoa is also depicted in the Netflix series “Narcos,” as the youngest son of an elite Medellin family that is into ranching and horse breeding and cuts a sharp contrast with Escobar, who came from more humble roots.

Richard Gregorie, a retired assistant US attorney who was on the prosecution team that convicted Ochoa, said authorities were never able to seize all of the Ochoa family’s illicit drug proceeds and he expects that the former mafia boss will have a welcome return home.

“He won’t be retiring a poor man, that’s for sure,” Gregorie told the Associated Press earlier this month.

Let’s Help The Needy, Gov Diri Urges Christians At Christmas

0

Governor of Bayelsa State, Senator Douye Diri, has admonished Christians and privileged individuals to reach out to those who do not have to enable them to celebrate Christmas.

Senator Diri gave the admonition during the state’s 2024 Christmas Carol of Nine Lessons at the DSP Alamieyeseigha Banquet Hall in Yenagoa.

The governor also urged his appointees to share whatever they got from the government with others, noting that if those privileged at this time learn to be their brother’s keeper, majority of Bayelsans and, indeed, Nigerians would have food to eat during the yuletide.

Senator Diri said the most important lesson about Christmas should be selfless love and sacrifice shown towards others.

The Bayelsa helmsman acknowledged the difficult economic times in the country but added that the period would soon be over.

His words: “Christians have reason to celebrate the birth of our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ. I also believe that no matter the hardship and hunger in the country, everyone will have something to eat this season if we learn to share even the little we have.

“For those who have, always give to those who do not have. If you are an official of government, please share with those who do not have.

“Everybody cannot reach the governor or the deputy governor. That is why we have over 5,000 appointees and if all of them open their hands, I am sure that 80-90 per cent of Bayelsans will have something to eat.”

The governor also enjoined Bayelsans to use the season to reflect and appreciate what God had done in their lives as individuals and as a state.

The colourful and well-attended event had choristers from the state executive council, legislature, judiciary, civil service and the state mass choir among others.

NDDC Begins Repairs Of Owerri-Port Harcourt Road

0

The NDDC Managing Director, Dr Samuel Ogbuku, has inspected the ongoing repair works at the failed sections of the Owerri-Port Harcourt Road between Umuapu and Umuagwo in Imo State.

Ogbuku stated that the road’s deplorable state necessitated the emergency measures the NDDC took to restore it and make it motorable immediately.

The NDDC Chief Executive Officer, accompanied by some Commission officials, was given an on-site briefing by the engineers of the construction firm handling the emergency rehabilitation.

Ogbuku expressed gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for giving the directive for the urgent restoration of the failed sections of strategic roads in the Niger Delta region.

The NDDC boss said: “Following a presidential directive to intervene urgently to restore the dilapidated sections of regional roads, the NDDC has quickly mobilised construction companies to carry out remedial works to ensure that the people do not suffer unnecessary pains while travelling.

The NDDC Managing Director commended the Federal Government for promptly responding to people’s outcries to rehabilitate bad roads in the Niger Delta region. He expressed confidence that the restoration work at the Owerri Port Harcourt Road would stand the test of time when completed.

According to Ogbuku: “As an interventionist agency, we will continue to complement the efforts of both the Federal and State Governments by taking measures to ease the stress commuters face daily.”
Ogbuku said he was satisfied with the quality of the job and commended the contractor for being ready to see it completed.

He enjoined members of the various communities and commuters to show understanding during construction, as the Commission was prepared to complete the project as quickly as possible.

One of the commercial bus drivers using the road, Mr. Kinsley Okorigwe, thanked the NDDC for responding on time to the distress calls of commuters bearing the pains of the damaged road.

Enugu State Flags Off Training Programme For Farmers On Livestock Production

0

In its effort to ensure food security in the state, the Enugu State government, weekend, flagged of the Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support, L-PRES, programme on the training of farmers in the state on livestock production.

Performing the ceremony at the Master Skills Development and Service Ltd, im Agbani. Nkanu West LGA of the state, the Commissioner for Agriculture and Agro Industrialisation, Hon. Patrick Ubru who was represented by the Permanent Secretary in the ministry, Mr Victor Ngwu said the programme was in line with Governor Peter Mbah’s promise to eradicate hunger, unemployment and ensure zero headcount poverty index in the state.

According to him, the workshop would expose the participants to knowledge on how to maximize production, deal with any challenges that may arise in the course of operating their farms, ensuring proper management and production of sufficient protein for the state.

“It is the desire of Enugu State governor, Dr Peter Mbah that the state records zero hunger and zero poverty head count index. It was on this note that he had graciously approved this training and doing his part to ensuring that farmers in Enugu State produce enough for the people to consume and equally export.

“The state is already constructing a lot of rural roads to open up the economy of rural areas, making it easy for the farmers to have easy access to the cities. He is equally building Smart Green Schools and healthcare facilities to ensure that we and our children are healthy and educated. Thousands of Enugu farmers had already undergone different trainings and the Ministry of Agriculture under his watch shall continue to support the farmers and prioritize their welfare”, Ngwu said.

Speaking earlier, the State Project Coordinator of L-PRES, Dr. Ifeyinwa Nnajieze described L-PRES as a project aimed at developing objectives to improve livestock productivity, resilience and commercialization of selected value chains, while ensuring economic diversification.

According to her, L-PRES, is a body sponsored by the World Bank, federal and state governments to ensure food sufficiency, while remaining resilient in the fight against food insecurity.

She further extoled the Enugu State governor, Dr Peter Mbah for the support his administration has been giving to the farmers, especially those in the livestock space who often undertake trainings and workshops, noting that Mbah’s vision to grow the state’s GDP from $4.4 billion to $30 billion, eradicate hunger and poverty in the state cannot be realized without being intentional about agriculture.

It’s good to seize this opportunity and acquire much knowledge about the value chain you are operating under livestock. L-PRES has enjoyed the support of the Enugu State government under Governor Peter Mbah who is intentional in ensuring that our state produces sufficient foods for consumption and exports to other states and beyond the country. His partnership with the World Bank and federal government is aimed at assisting the livestock farmers with the knowledge and skills which they will utilize in scaling up production,” the coordinator said.

Dr. Nnajieze recalled that the Enugu State Government in collaboration with the National Animal Production Research Institute, NAPRI had recently sponsored the training of 30 persons, most of which were the lecturers from the Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT) to Zaria, Kaduna State, for a two-weeks training on artificial insemination and the use of modern AI equipment to enhance animal productivity.
