0

President Muhammadu Buhari endorsed the trial of 5G technology at the MTN first live demo of 5G network (5th generation network technology) on Monday in Abuja.
He was represented at the occasion by the Minister of Communications and Digital Technology, Dr Isa Pantami.

Buhari expressed delight to be part of the historical moment, stressing that migration from 4G to 5G would be a revolution in the industry.

The President also directed Pantami to address the challenges facing the telecoms sector systematically, adding that an executive order was in the pipeline to consider Telecommunications Infrastructure as critical national assets.

“We are working day in day out to make sure that the environment is conducive for people to do their businesses.
“This administration is passionate about developing Nigeria’s Information Communication Technology (ICT) Sector which contributes more than Oil and Gas to GDP,” Buhari said.

News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Prof. Umar Danbatta, Executive Vice Chairman of Nigerian Communication Commission (NCC), had told the global community that African continent held the ace, adding that 5G was the next frontier of investment.

Danbatta expressed optimism that 5G would provide a very veritable and convincing investment for investors.
Speaking at the event, former Executive Vice Chairman, NCC, Ernest Ndukwe, who is also a board member of MTN Nigeria, expressed delight that Nigeria was one of the countries championing 5G trial on the African continent.

Ndukwe said that the new technology was at least, 100 times faster than 4G, adding that 5G also provided faster data transfer speed and lower latency, compared to 4G.
“Additionally, 5G boasts of improved reliability as well as better support for more devices.

“5G is a transformational change from 4G with the potential to provide 20 times faster data speeds.

“It carries a massive amount of data for a large number of simultaneous users.
“5G will support business innovative ambitions, create new markets, transform supply chain management and create a smarter and more efficient manufacturing sector.

“5G is extremely fast and supports data transfer rates of up to 20Gbits/S. 5G will allow stream, download and upload of huge quantities of data at a much faster rate.
“During a comparison test on both 4G and 5G networks, it took just 15.78 seconds to download a 2.3 GB video on the 5G network and the same file on 4G took exactly 5 minutes, 3.84 seconds.”

“This according to the telco operator will enable the company to provide better data services at a more affordable cost to its subscribers.

Maina Arrives Court With Walking Stick During Bail Application

0

Former Chairman of the defunct Pension Reform Task Team, Abdulrasheed Maina, on Monday arrived the Federal High Court, Abuja, with the aid of a walking stick.
Maina, who came into Court 6, 2nd floor of the building at 9:40am, supported himself with the walking stick after he appeared in court in a wheelchair last week.

The ex-pension reform boss, who is standing trial on alleged money laundering charge to the tune of over N2bn preferred against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, was dressed in a brown caftan with a matching cap, according to the News Agency of Nigeria.

Justice Abang had on November 21 fixed Monday for hearing on the bail application and for the continuation of his trial.

The judge, who accused the Nigerian Correctional Services of compounding the issue before the court for failing to produce a medical report on the health status of Maina days after the order to the effect was made by the court, ruled that Maina’s trial would be on a day-to-day basis in subsequent proceedings.

His trial was stalled during the last adjourned date due to his worsening health condition.

The EFCC had on October 25, arraigned Maina alongside his firm, Common Input Property and Investment Ltd, before Justice Abang.

Though he pleaded not guilty to the 12-count charge, his trial has yet to make meaningful progress due to his health.

Police arrest six over Kogi PDP women leader’s murder

0

Less than 24 hours after President Muhammadu Buhari ordered investigation into the gruesome murder of a women leader of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Kogi State, the police have disclosed that six suspects have been arrested.

The 60-year-old Salome Abuh, who was the PDP women leader of Ochadamu Ward in Ofu Local Government Area of the state, had her house set on fire, while she was inside, by political thugs allegedly belonging to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) last week Monday.

The incident was believed to be a reprisal attack over the violence-ridden gubernatorial election in the state.

In a short message sent to EQUITYNEWS.NG on Monday morning, the Kogi State police spokesperson, Williams Aya, a deputy superintendent of police, said “six suspects have been arrested while investigation was still ongoing.”

Mr Aya’s terse message was a response to EQUITYNEWS.NG’ persistent enquiry into the update on the heinous crime.
But the police spokesman did not give details on the arrested suspects and where they were picked up over the incident. He did not also reveal when the arrest was made, and when the suspects would be charged to court. He, however, told the News Agency of Nigeria that the suspects were arrested last Friday.

President Buhari had on Sunday, in a statement issued on his behalf by his media aide, Femi Adesina, condemned the murder of Mrs. Abuh.

“President Muhammadu Buhari expects scrupulous investigation into the heinous murder of Madam Achejuh Abuh, Woman Leader of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Wada/Aro campaign council, in the just concluded gubernatorial election in Kogi State,” Mr Adesina said.

“The president decries whatever could spur anyone to take the life of another human being, particularly a woman, who was burnt to death in her home in the most gruesome manner.”

Mr Buhari charged “all security agencies involved in the investigation to do a thorough and expeditious job on the matter, so that justice could be served without fear or favour.”

“We must learn to behave decently, whether during elections or at other times. No life should be taken wantonly under any guise, and the fact that this reprehensible act occurred two days after voting shows primitive behaviour, which should not be accepted in a decent society,” the statement read in part.

Mr Adesina said Mr Buhari sympathizes with the family of the deceased and vowed that the law would catch up with the malefactors and justice would be done.

Any descent to barbarism, as was visited on the PDP Woman Leader, President Buhari says, has gone out of the realm of politics, and is pure criminality and bestiality, the spokesman said.

“Such evildoers must be brought to justice, irrespective of whatever allegiances they hold,” Mr Buhari was quoted as saying.

Nigerian man pens open letter to all ‘Yahoo Boys’ on how they can make legit money without defrauding people

0

A Nigerian man, Paul Olorunrantimi has penned an open letter to all Yahoo Boys on how they can make money without illegally obtaining money from people by deception.

Read what he wrote below.

You don’t have to be a YahooGuy to make money online. Apart from the fact that illegal wealth isn’t sustainable, illegal businesses are very addictive. You also lose your creative mind.

There are 1001 legitimate businesses you could do online & earn a decent income!

You can make livings and meet ends without defrauding anyone or mailing foreigners to send you dollars in the name of 419.

Admittedly, most advertised Internet businesses aren’t as profitable as we’re made to believe. However, a lot of them pay.

The biggest challenge with newbies is that they are over expectant and over ambitious, so the moment their expectations aren’t met as hurriedly as expected, they give up & join the millions who say Internet businesses don’t pay. Nothing good comes cheap!

It troubles me a lot seeing millions of our youths wasting precious time debating bitter politics, religion, tribal issues, etc, when such time could be used productively; for people with unemployment challenge. We need to have a sober reflection as youth.

The easiest & fastest skills/profession anyone could learn today are digital skills.

With digital skills, your chances of getting a decent job increases by over 50% at the global labour market & you could work from the comfort of your home in Ajegunle, for a client/firm in Canada.

There are hundreds of thousands of Indians who earn a living from the comfort of their homes.

They have no govt or corporate job. In fact, a lot of them don’t even have degrees.

They only need to learn basic English & they’re good to go. I have hired hundreds of them, too.We must kill this sense of entitlement we have held for long now.

The sense of entitlement that because we are graduates or hold certain qualifications, the govt or our relatives owe us decent jobs & better lives.

This may have been the case some 50yrs ago. Not in 2019, my brother!

We are now in an era where what you know (skills) beyond your conventional educational qualifications, is as or even more important than your educational qualifications, and the earlier we accept this reality, the better for us, especially as young people.

Nevertheless, govts at all levels must also be interested in championing this new direction of thinking as a means of solving youth restiveness & unemployment.

This could be done through institutional framework restructuring, designing policies policies that will transform our economy into a digital economy and human-capital development.

These have proven to create more jobs in the developing nations. Check Rwanda if I lie.

To achieve this, our leaders, especially political leaders, must first realise that they lack basic understanding of the digital world, then make efforts to learn & understand it; because you only give what you have & you cannot promote what you don’t believe. The time is NOW!

More Nigerian youths have access to the internet than Indians youths, but more Indian earn a living online than Nigerians. The difference? They are taught digital skills from primary school, while an average Nigerian attends his first computer training after graduation. What do they teach them? You already know.

The digital industry can employ more than most govt establishments, if govts could create the enabling environment. It would create more jobs & reduce the burden of employments from govt, as serious govts have little to do with direct job creation. They rather serve as ‘enablers’.

Fellas, the time is NOW to birth a new generation of radical thinkers. Are you ready

Kogi election: Buhari asked to arrest killers of PDP women leader or face ICC

0

The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria, HURIWA, has tasked President Muhammadu Buhari to ensure that the armed thugs allegedly belonging to his party, the All Progressives Congress, APC, who burnt the Women Leader of Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in Kogi State, Mrs. Acheju Abuh are arrested, prosecuted and punished.

HURIWA warned that failure to meet its demand, Buhari’s government would be dragged before the International Criminal Court, ICC, in The Hague, Netherlands.

The prominent rights group lambasted Buhari, the First Lady Aisha, Women Affairs Minister Mrs. Pauline Tallen and the leadership of the National Council for Women Societies and Women Rights campaigners over their collective silence on “this atrocious burning of a woman to a gruesome death by armed thugs of the ruling political party only because of her political beliefs and for her support for the governorship candidate of the People’s Democratic party (PDP).”

In a statement by its National Coordinator, Emmanuel Onwubiko and sent to DAILY POST, the rights group said: “HURIWA is shocked and saddened that For over a week since after this satanical atrocity happened of setting ablaze a Woman by armed political thugs who have till now not been arrested and the leadership of Women in Nigeria led by the wife of the president has said nothing nor has the ministry of Women Affairs or the National Council of Women Societies added their voices in condemnation of this evil act.

“The silence is painful and for the fact that Mr. President went about celebrating the pyrrhic victory of his candidate Yahaya Bello in the Kogi election and could not even order for the observation of some minutes of silence to honour the memory of the PDP women leader killed by armed thugs of APC in Kogi shows the devaluation of the sanctity of human life under the current dispensation.

“The act of burning this woman to a painful and undeserving animalistic death is such that if the killers are not arrested and punished within a record time then civil Rights bodies can file a petition before the International Criminal court in The Hague Netherlands to possibly try the Kogi state governor for alleged crimes against humanity even as the Inspector General of Police Mohammed Adamu may be included in the list of the accused persons since the Nigerian police force managed the security during the Kogi governorship poll during which this lady was set alight and killed willfully.

“The President Muhammadu Buhari who thinks since he is in his last tenure he can afford to be reckless could even be named as an interested party because as the commander-in-chief of the Armed forces of Nigeria this sort of atrocity happened and his administration failed in their obligation to prevent the violations of human rights including the violation of the Rights to life of the PDP’s Women Leader killed in Kogi State. By becoming parties to international treaties, States including Nigeria, assume obligations and duties under international law to respect, protect and fulfil human rights for all persons within their territory or jurisdiction, without discrimination of any kind.

“Further, “States, including all branches thereof, have the primary responsibility for the promotion and protection of all human rights, including the prevention of human rights violations. Under these universal obligations, the Nigerian government ought to have put mechanisms in place to prevent the burning to death of the Women Leader of People’s Democratic party in Kogi state and worst still, the Nigerian Police Force had over 60,000 armed police operatives in Kogi state during the governorship election but these armed security forces refused to prevent the atrocious burning to death of the opposition politician who was a Women Leader of People’s Democratic party “.

Citing documents of the International Human Rights Council, HURIWA affirmed that: “The obligations of States include the duty to protect against human rights abuse by third parties, including private actors. States may breach their international human rights law obligations where they fail to take appropriate steps to prevent, investigate, punish and redress private actors’ abuse like in the case of the Women Leader of People’s Democratic party in Kogi state burnt to death by violent fanatics of All Progressives Congress.

The obligation to prevent human rights violations is expressly formulated in some treaties and has been addressed more broadly in human rights treaty bodies’ General Comments and reports, notably in relation to: the prevention of torture, genocide, mass atrocities, incitement to hatred, violent extremism, and the elimination of discrimination on particular grounds (such as race, religion or belief or sexual orientation(A/HRC/29/23)) or with regard to a particular group (such as women, persons with disabilitiesand minorities (A/HRC/28/30, paras. 13–14); A/69/66).. Nigeria is a signatory to all these treaties.”

HURIWA stated that the killing of the PDP’s Women leader took place because the “Nigerian State failed in its obligation to prevent such callous and heartless act of violence on an innocent citizen just as the Rights group reminded the Federal government that the consideration of prevention of violation of these specific rights highlights some common features and approaches to prevention, including the identification of risk and mitigating factors, and the development of some practical tools.”

“For example, the prevention of genocide, war crimes, ethnic cleansing and crimes against humanity requires “sustained efforts to build the resilience of societies to atrocity crimes by ensuring that the rule of law is respected and that all human rights are protected, without discrimination. Sadly, the sanctity of human life has overtime under the current dispensation in Nigeria suffered grave violations with many citizens getting killed by armed non state actors and many others are extra-legally executed by state-sponsored security forces and not a single indicted person is prosecuted just like in the instant case of the Women Leader of People’s Democratic party in Kogi state,” it added.

HURIWA recalled that the Women Leader of Wada Aro Campaign Council, Ochadamu ward, Mrs. Acheju Abuh, was burnt alive in her home by suspected thugs.

HURIWA said what happened was a hate crime and pure act of criminal murder because her killing was related to her political beliefs just as she was also the Women Leader for the campaign organisation of the Peoples Democratic Party governorship candidate, Musa Wada, in the just-concluded governorship election in the state.

Philippines soldiers rescue British man and wife from Abu Sayyaf

0

Philippine soldiers on Monday rescued a British man and his wife from an Islamic State-linked jihadist group nearly two months after the couple was kidnapped from their beach resort in the nation’s south, authorities said.

Troops recovered the pair after a firefight with gunmen from the Abu Sayyaf group on the restive southern island of Jolo, which is a stronghold of the kidnap-for-ransom gang that has been behind some of the worst attacks in the Philippines.

“There was a brief exchange of fire, but they later abandoned the couple after being overwhelmed by pursuing government forces,” Lieutenant General Cirilito Sobejana told AFP, adding the hostages were unharmed.

Regional army spokesperson Arvin Encinas said no ransom was paid.
The British embassy in Manila confirmed the rescue of Alan and Wilma Hyrons, saying in a statement “we extend our gratitude to the government and authorities of the Philippines.”
Armed men abducted the couple on October 4 at their beach resort on the southern island of Mindanao, which makes up the southern third of the Philippines.

Muslim separatists have led a decades-long insurgency in the south of the Catholic-majority Philippines, which has led to the death of tens of thousands of people.
While the government has negotiated peace with the largest group, the Moro Islamic Liberation Front, hardline factions allied with the Islamic State group are not part of the accord.

Islamic State said its East Asia Province affiliate carried out a suicide bombing of a Sunday mass in January at a Catholic cathedral on Jolo which killed 21 in the country’s worst attack in years.

Authorities blamed the bombing on Abu Sayyaf, which in part funds its violence with ransom payments.
Abu Sayyaf commander Isnilon Hapilon pledged allegiance to ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi in 2014, and in July 2018 the group became part of the newly declared Islamic State East Asia province. Hapilon was killed in 2017.

Dutch birdwatcher Ewold Horn, who was kidnapped in 2012 in the southern Philippines, was killed in May during a firefight between his Abu Sayyaf captors and the military.

Louis Vuitton buys jeweller Tiffany for $16bn

0

The world’s biggest luxury goods company is buying US-based jeweller Tiffany & Co for more than $16bn (£12.5bn).
The deal gives LVMH’s billionaire owner Bernard Arnault a bigger slice of one of the fastest growing luxury sectors.

He said Tiffany had an “unparalleled heritage” and fitted with its other brands, Louis Vuitton and Bulgari.
Tiffany has suffered falling jewellery sales, hit by lower spending by tourists and a strong US dollar.

Tiffany is something of a New York institution and its flagship store is next to Trump Tower on 5th Avenue. The company hit global fame after being featured in the 1961 Audrey Hepburn film Breakfast at Tiffany’s.

Founded in 1837, it employs more than 14,000 people and operates about 300 stores.
Mr Arnault has coveted the business since buying the Bulgari brand in 2011 for $5.2bn. The Tiffany acquisition is LVMH’s biggest deal.

“We have an immense respect and admiration for Tiffany and intend to develop this jewel with the same dedication and commitment that we have applied to each and every one of our Maisons [brand houses],” he said.

LVMH has 75 brands, 156,000 employees and a network of more than 4,590 stores. Other brands include Kenzo, Tag Heuer, Dom Pérignon, Moet & Chandon, and Christian Dior.
“We will be proud to have Tiffany sit alongside our iconic brands and look forward to ensuring that Tiffany continues to thrive for centuries to come,” Mr Arnault said.

Known for its signature robin’s-egg blue packaging, Tiffany rebuffed LVMH’s initial advance made just five weeks ago, arguing it significantly undervalued the company.

The deal values each Tiffany share at $135 in cash and is higher than the initial offer of $120 a share – which valued the business at $14.5bn.

Roger Farah, chairman of Tiffany, said the board had concluded this deal “provides an exciting path forward with a group that appreciates and will invest in Tiffany’s unique assets and strong human capital”.

The brand is associated with diamond rings but it has lost its appeal in recent years, according to Fiona Cincotta, market analyst at City Index,
She told the BBC’s Today programme that there had been a “changing of the times”.
“It’s not quite keeping up with millennials so it just needs a re-boost and a re-brand,” she said.

LVMH has experience of revitalising businesses. She mentioned jeweller Bulgari, which when LVMH took it over in 2011 had operating margins of 8%. These have now widened 25% on double the sales.
“This something that LVMH appears to do very well… this is a real turnaround story,” she said.
Jewellery was one of the strongest performing areas of the luxury industry in 2018, according to consultancy Bain & Co, which forecast that comparable sales in the $20bn global market were expected to rise by 7% this year.

This has encouraged firms to expand in the sector. Luxury goods firm Kering has launched high-end jewellery lines for its fashion brand Gucci, while Switzerland’s Richemont – a sector leader with labels such as Cartier – recently bought Italy’s Buccellati.

As part of its push for a bigger share of the US market, LVMH has opened a factory in south Texas. The plant was officially inaugurated last month in a ceremony attended by Mr Arnault and US President Donald Trump and his daughter Ivanka.
