BREAKING: FG lifts ban on interstate movement, approves reopening of schools

0

The Nigerian Government has announced the partial lifting of the ban on interstate movement.

Chairman of the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 and Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha, made the announcement on Monday during a press briefing.

Mustapha said the government had extended the Phase Two of the eased lockdown by four weeks.

He said within this extended phase, there will also be a safe re-opening of schools to allow graduating students back to classes, while interstate movements would only take place outside curfew hours.

He said, “I am pleased to inform you that Mr President has carefully considered the 5th Interim Report of the PTF and has accordingly approved that with the exception of some modifications to be expatiated upon later, the Phase Two of the eased lockdown be extended by another four weeks with effect from Tuesday, June 30, 2020, through midnight of Monday, 27 July 2020.

“Specifically, however, the following measures shall either remain in place or come into effect: maintaining the current phase of the national response for another four weeks in line with modifications to be expatriated by the National Coordinator; permission of movement across state borders only outside curfew hours with effect from 1st July 2020; enforcement of laws around non-pharmaceutical interventions by states in particular the use of face masks in public places; safe reopening of schools to allow students in graduating classes resume in-person in preparation for examinations and; safe reopening of domestic aviation services as soon as practicable.

“Within the month under review, the PTF continued to monitor developments and consistently admonished Nigerians to change their behaviour in view of the fact that the spread of the virus had entered the community phase. It is the considered opinion of the PTF that Nigerians, though aware of the existence of the virus, have generally misunderstood the objectives behind the reasoning of government in gradually relaxing the restrictions.

“As we are all aware, the PTF in conjunction with sub-national entities, the organised private sector, put in places a number of measures. The PTF also escalated its activities around risk communication to Nigerians but we have observed with growing concern the non-compliances with these measures designed to prevent transmission and protect vulnerable segments of the population. We hold the strong view that if such actions do not abate, experiences of resurgence of the virus from other jurisdictions including China, the United States of America, Brazil and across Europe may emerge in Nigeria and we run the risk of erasing the gains made in the last three months.”

The 2020 season of the Big Brother Naija (BBNaija) reality TV show is now expected to commence on July 19.

The organisers of the much anticipated reality show broke the news on its official Twitter page on Monday.

In May, Multichoice Nigeria had commenced online auditions for the fifth edition of the show, calling for video entries which often precede the selection of prospective housemates.

Those seeking a spot in this year’s edition were also informed about the five requirements they will need to qualify for the auditions.

“Participate in the BBN auditions by simply curating a 2-minute video motivating why you deserve to be in the #BBNaija House. Simple right? Entries open from 20th – 30th May 2020,” the show host had written on the microblogging platform.

The latest edition would be coming on heels of the successes recorded during the show’s first four editions, the last of which saw Mercy Eke winthe grand prize of N60 million.

It also comes against the backdrop of a reunion organised for former housemates of the reality TV show.

The fourth season of the show, dubbed ‘Pepper Dem’ edition, was characterised by several controversies including a heated battle between Eke and Tacha Akide, the most-talked about housemates.

N-Power: FG receives 1m applications in 48 hours

0

The Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management, and Social Development has said over 1 million applications have been received from across the Federation in less than 48 hours that it opened the N-Power (Batch C) portal.

This was contained in a statement signed on Sunday by the ministry’s Deputy Director, Information, Rhoda Iliya.

The enrolment exercise for the new N-Power beneficiaries commenced on June 26.

Iliya said youths with no formal education could send in applications for a new aspect of the programme with a focus on agriculture.

“The Ministry wishes to reiterate that all young Nigerians between the ages of 18-35 with or without formal education can apply for a slot in the new program which would be very focused on agriculture.

“The number of applications so far received is an indication of the number of our youths who need jobs and the confidence in the program.

“The Ministry will continue to collaborate with its technical partners to provide timely support to all applicants. The selection process would be fair and transparent and the public would also be carried along at every stage,” she said.

The N-Power Programme was inaugurated by the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), in 2016 under the National Social Investment Programme.

The aim of the programme was to lift citizens out of poverty through capacity building, investment and direct support.

COVID-19: INEC Lists Tough Conditions For Campaign Rallies In Edo, Ondo

0

The Independent National Electoral Commission, amid rising COVID-19 cases in the country, on Sunday set criteria that must be met by political parties before holding public rallies for the Edo and Ondo states governorship polls.

The commission’s National Commissioner and Chairman (Information and Voter Education Committee), Festus Okoye, said before holding any rally, political parties must give INEC a seven-day notice.

The criteria, it was gathered, were aimed at preventing the spread of COVID-19 at the rallies.

While condemning a concert held by a hip-hop artiste, Azeez Fashola, alias Naira Marle at the Jabi Lake Mall, Abuja on June 13, the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 on June 15 warned Nigerians to avoid rallies of any category.

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control Director-General, Dr Chikwe Ihekweazu, said such gatherings could lead to a further spike in COVID-19 cases.

Okoye told The PUNCH that INEC had informed political parties that their guidelines for campaigns must conform to the NCDC protocols, including social distancing and use of face masks.

Warning against crowded rallies, the INEC commissioner said, “Political parties are encouraged to develop appropriate guidelines for the conduct of rallies and campaigns taking into consideration all the guidelines and protocols developed by health authorities at the national and state levels.

“Where there are conflicts between political parties’ guidelines on the conduct of rallies and campaigns and those issued by the commission, the commission shall draw the attention of the political parties to the discrepancies.”

He recalled that the INEC Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, had on June 9 issued supplementary regulations and guidelines for rallies and campaigns by parties, aspirants, candidates and their supporters in line with the commission’s policy on conducting elections in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Okoye stated, “It is mandatory for political parties intending to hold rallies and campaigns to notify the commission, through the electoral officer at the local government level or the resident electoral commissioner at the state level. The notification shall be by a notice, transmitted electronically and in hard copies giving details of the public rallies, meetings, processions or public gathering not later than seven days to the date of the event.”

According to Okoye, campaigns by parties shall be based on their published manifestos and shall comply with the provisions of regulations issued by the commission.

He added that the campaigns should not violate the National Broadcasting Commission and public health regulations.

The INCE commissioner stated, “All the registered political parties are aware of the global pandemic and how it has affected the way we live and organise and we expect political parties to factor the health and safety of Nigerians into their guidelines for campaigns and rallies.

“We expect political parties to be creative, innovative and dynamic in their rallies and campaigns. It is the responsibility of political parties to design campaign strategies in line with the regulations and protocols issued by health authorities.”
