Third Mainland Bridge Will Be Closed On Friday – FG

0

The Federal Government says the Third Mainland Bridge will be closed on Friday at midnight and will not be reopened until January 2021.

Minister of Works and Housing, Mr Babatunde Fashola, who confirmed this at a briefing in Abuja on Tuesday, called on motorists in Lagos to be patient with the repairs.

Mr Fashola explained that the maintenance of the busiest bridge in the country was aimed at replacing damaged components for a better motoring experience.
The maintenance is to be carried out on a length of 3.5 kilometres out of the 11.8 kilometres of the bridge.

The planned duration of the closure and the importance of the bridge to activities in Lagos which has battled traffic for years has led to concerns.

Mr Fashola acknowledged that the closure will lead to hardship in the short term but explained that there was no other way to carry out the maintenance work without closing the bridge.

He added that it was better to bear six months of work and closure than to allow the bridge to collapse, a development that would take years to fix.

Sanwo-Olu Approves Bus Fare Hike

0

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos has approved a hike in bus fares on routes operated by the Lagos Bus Services Limited (LSBL).

The hike, according to a statement by Kolawole Ojelabi, Assistant Director, Corporate Communication, Lagos Metropolitan Transportation Authority (LAMATA), the increase will take effect from August 1, 2020.

He said Governor Sanwo-Olu approved the review following a plea by the bus operating company on the need to sustainments its operation because of the negative effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on public bus transportation.

The governor also approved LBSL’s request to increase the number of passengers per bus from 20 to 42 in observance of updated COVID-19 protocol, as directed by the Nigerian Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) in the operation of public transport, while ensuring other measures are in place.

Sanwo-Olu granted LBSL buses permission to access dedicated bus lanes in Lagos State, thus making their journey times predictable on corridors with bus dedicated lanes.

LBSL had argued that carrying only 20 passengers per trip had reduced the company’s revenue by 72 per cent.

Most NDDC Contracts Awarded To National Assembly Members – Akpabio

0

The Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Sen. Godswill Akpabio, on Monday, said most contracts from the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) are awarded to National Assembly members.

The Minister made the comment as he was being grilled by members of the House of Representatives committee on NDDC in a public hearing.

The Minister had been invited by the lawmakers on Friday to defend his actions as Minister of Niger Delta Affairs and shed more light on financial misappropriation within the NDDC.

Akpabio’s comment surfaced as he was responding to a question about NDDC expenditure amid a forensic audit.

“We cannot close down the Niger Delta Development Commission because of the fact that we are doing (a) forensic audit,” he said.

“The NDDC plays a vital role in ensuring the peace and security of the region and 90 percent or more of the resources of the country come from there.

“If you close it down in totality all you will have is chaos. You will have a lot of, not just militancy, you will have a lot of insurrection.

“So it is important that people who have gone to court, people who genuinely did jobs should be paid for their jobs. For me, I am not against it because, of course, who are even the greatest beneficiaries? It is you people.”

A member of the committee took him up on his “you people” allegation and asked him to clarify.

“I just told you that we have records to show that most of the contracts in the NDDC are given out to members of the National Assembly,” the ex-Senator said.

JUDGMENT: Industrial Court Dismisses Lecturers’ Claims Against University of Abuja for Lacking Merit

0

The National Industrial Court, Abuja Judicial Division has dismissed the case filed by two former lecturers Dr. and Mrs. Agbonika against the University of Abuja in its entirety for lacking in merit.

The presiding judge, Justice Haastrup held that the argument of Dr. and Mrs. Agbonika that their appointments were without conditions or that University did not draw their attention to any guidelines is untenable that Court must always respect the sanctity of the agreements reached by parties, and must not make a contract for them or re-write the one they have already made.

The Claimants had averred that their letters of unconditional appointment were signed in 1994 and was not accompanied by any guidelines neither was any reference made to the existence of such, that the University went ahead to effect their demotion and reduced their salaries after a period of devout service, urged the court to nullify the purported letters of reversal among others.

The defendant’s Counsel, J.O Musa Esq. said the Claimants’ employment was against the guidelines regulating appointment and promotions of the academic staff of the Institution as the Claimants were not qualified for the positions in which they were employed with. Hence, their argument that they were offered unconditional appointment is untrue.

Delivering Judgment, the presiding Judge, Justice Haastrup held that the argument of claimants that their appointments were without conditions or that defendant did not draw their attention to any Guidelines, is untenable.

“In any event, the position of the law which is applicable in the instant case is that parties are bound by the terms of the contract and where the terms of the contract are unambiguous, the parties cannot move out of same in search of more favourable terms.

“It is, therefore, my finding that the claimants’ employment is not unconditional but subject to terms of employment as contained in defendant’s condition of service referred to in the claimants’ respective acceptance letters (offers of employment & condition of service) and I so hold. The arguments of claimants’ counsel on this point are all rejected.

“The law is that tendering of a letter of resignation as in the present case carries with it the right to leave the service automatically, and the claimants no longer have interests to protect in that position and have no business also to sue the defendant as they did in this case. They have no standing or right to sue in this case and have no cause of action. I so hold.

Fire Breaks Out At Federal Inland Revenue Service Office

0

There has been an outbreak of fire at the newly constructed office block of the Federal Inland Revenue Service area office in Katsina State.

The office complex is located directly opposite the Muhammadu Dikko Stadium in Katsina, the state capital.

Smoke could be seen billowing from one of the buildings on Monday.

The cause of the fire is not yet known.

Also, the extent of damage could not be ascertained and there was no report yet that anyone was injured in the fire.

The FIRS fire incident adds to the series of fire outbreaks that had hit key government offices in the country in recent days.

On April 8, fire broke out at the Treasury House, a building housing the Accountant-General of the Federation’s office, exactly a week after there was another fire outbreak at the headquarters of the Corporate Affairs Commission, while the Independent National Electoral Commission’s office in Abuja also went up in flames days after.

The Jos and Gombe branches branches of the CBN were also gutted by fire earlier.

Probe: Pondei, Acting NDDC MD Slumps During House Hearing

Prof. ‪Kemebradikumo Pondei, acting managing director of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), has slumped at the House of Representatives when he was under cross examination from lawmakers.

He had been questioned for over one hour before he slowly slumped over his desk. Several people rushed to his aid as the proceedings were halted.

He then appeared to be in a seizure with a man, holding open his mouth as others held him upright. After he appeared to regain and lose composure intermittently, he was moved out of the session.

The committee is in its fourth day of public hearing as it investigates alleged financial misappropriation at the agency. The controversy had seen strong allegations of corruption traded between the Minister and the former MD of the NDDC, Joy Nunieh, who appeared before the lawmakers via Zoom on Friday.

Reps Committee Chairman, Tunji-Ojo Recuses Self From NDDC Probe Hearing

Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), has recused himself from the ongoing investigation of the commission.

This comes after the Interim Management Committee (IMC) of the NDDC led by the acting Managing Director, Professor Kemebradikumo Pondei, insisted that it will not participate in the public hearing due to Tunji-Bello’s involvement.

The NDDC had last week stated that Tunji-Ojo had also been accused of “crime” against the commission and, therefore, could not be deemed an impartial arbiter in the investigative hearing.

Thomas Ereyi-Tobi,  Deputy Chairman of the House Committee, has subsequently been asked to preside over the hearing.

The House is investigating the alleged expenditure of N81.5 billion in five months and other allegations against the Interim Management Committee (IMC) of the NDDC.
