JUST IN: American National accepts Islam at the hands Sheikh Al-Sudais

0

ABHA-Steve, an American tourist, embraced Islam at the hands of Sheikh Dr. Abdur-Rahman Al-Sudais, Chief of the General Presidency for the Affairs of the Grand Mosque in Makkah and Majid Nabawi in Madina .

Steve pronounced his Shahadah (testimony of accepting Islam) before Sheikh Sudais recently and expressed his immense joy and gratitude for his new found faith. He profusely thanked and expressed his gratitude towards Sheikh Sudais, who in turn praised the Almighty Allah for opening Steve’s heart, and enabling him to accept the true religion of God.

Sheikh Sudais further said that Steve “was now his brother in Islam” adding that what casted a lasting impression on Steve’s mind was the purity of Islam and it’s sublime teachings of the Oneness of God. Additionally, he described how Steve was extremely impressed with the level of tolerance and peaceful coexistence amongst those of different faiths within the Kingdom. The key factors that stood out for Steve during his visit were the Islamic teachings of good neighbourliness and Saudi hospitality.

Steve, who works in the tourism sector in Miami, was visiting Abha alongside some of his closest friends. Providentially, and as if as pre-destined, Steve lived in the same neighborhood as Sheikh Sudais, who at the time was also spending some days in Abha. It was Saad Al-Matrafi, Sheikh Sudais’ translator, who met with Steve and gave him Zamzam and dates as a gift from Sheikh Sudais.

Al-Matrafi said that Steve showed keen interest in knowing more about Islam and kept reading books about the Islamic teachings. He also briefed Sheikh Sudais about his tête-à-tête with the American tourist and Sheikh Al-Sudais was so impressed that he requested to meet with his American neighbor. During his discourse with Steve, Sh Sudais referred to several Qur’anic verses and Prophetic narrations that enjoined Muslims to be good to their neighbors and the rights they have over each other. He specifically mentioned the story of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and the Jewish lady;

Our beloved Prophet (peace be upon him) had a Jewish neighbor who used to throw garbage at him. Instead of reacting with anger, Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) showed kindness. When the Prophet learned one day that the neighbor was sick, he went to visit/care for that neighbor. This is an invaluable life lesson for all of us on the rights of our neighbors.

As we continued talking to Steve regarding his journey to Islam, it quickly became very clear the level of joy and happiness that beamed on his face, upon accepting Islam and pronouncing the Shahadah. He mentioned that “the Islamic teachings of fairness, tolerance, compassion, and mercy impressed him a lot”. To add, he expressed his immense gratitude and appreciation for the kindness and hospitality he found with the Saudi people, describing them as “simple” and caring”. In an array of emotions he continued to share his experience and said he felt like he was with his own family, his own “brothers”. Steve, who was visiting the Kingdom for leisure purposes and in his own words to “explore the beauty spread over the length and breadth of the whole country” stated that he was curious to know about the birthplace of Islam and the major development and progress of the country’s 2030 Vision.

Al-Matrafi who also played a major role in leading Steve to accept Islam by the permission of Allah, shared his encounter;

As soon as Sheikh Sudais arrived at his lodging in Abha, he inquired about his neighbor. On inquiries, I found out that our neighbor was an American national, Sheikh Sudais suggested sending some Zamzam, Arabic coffee, and dates to him as a gift. The initiative surprised Steve and he asked what was the reasoning for the gifts? Al-Matrafi explained to him that Islam teaches good conduct and kindness towards one’s neighbor. Moreover, Al-Matrafi said during his several meetings with Steve he found out that the American national had previously read extensively about Islam and Muslims. As his relations with Steve continued and during one of their morning walks in a nearby park they discussed Islam and the parameters it sets around all worldly affairs.

The next morning Steve informed Al-Matrafi that he spent much of the night thinking about Islam and decided that he was ready to accept Islam as his faith, after three years of studying the religion Upon hearing this, Al-Matrafi was elated with joy and suggested that he takes the Shahadah in the presence of Sheikh Sudais, to which he immediately agreed. Al-Matrafi then took him to Sheikh Sudais who said the words of the Shahadah and Steve repeated after him. Later, Sheikh Sudais gave instructions to host Steve to perform Umrah in Makkah and to visit the Prophet’s Mosque in Madinah as well.

“Steve was so overwhelmed with joy that he could not hold back his tears,” Al-Matrafi.

Uber records $1.8bn loss as coronavirus stalls Revenue

0

Ride-sharing giant, Uber Technologies Inc, has recorded a loss of $1.8 billion in the second quarter of 2020, after mobility gross bookings declined 73 percent in year-on-year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Aside from the pandemic, Uber was also currently plagued by lawsuits challenging the company welfare style for drivers on its platform.

Uber’s mobility revenue fell by over two-thirds to $790 million, while total revenue fell by 29 percent, the steepest decline since the company’s initial public offering last May, with the company’s fall was due to a drop in revenue from the US, its largest market.

The US company disclosed that its bottom line was hit by restructuring and stock-based compensation even after it laid off about a quarter of its workforce in May and closed and consolidated 45 offices across the world.

Despite the shoddy performance of its core ride-hailing business, Uber has promised investors that it has cash to power on.

The company’s Chief Financial Officer (CFO), Nelson Chai, said that Uber was taking measures to return to profit by the end of 2021.

Uber’s silver lining performance was Uber Eats, its food delivery business, which reported a 103% rise in revenue to $1.2 billion in the second quarter.

The company’s chief executive, Dara Khosrowshahi, said: “As some people stay closer to home, more people are ordering from Uber Eats than ever before”.

Faced with growing demand, Uber Eats expanded its delivery business to also include groceries and prescription medications in the second quarter of 2020. The firm also acquired food delivery company Postmates, as well as Cornershop, which specializes in delivering groceries.

Earlier, California’s Labor Commissioner filed a complaint against Uber. The complaint stated that the ride-hailing firm committed wage theft by misclassifying its drivers as independent contractors.

Uber is also fighting a ruling in the UK, which has asked the company to classify its drivers as formal workers. If the company loses its appeal in UK’s highest court, it will have to offer its drivers’ employment protections such as minimum wage and holiday pay.

“We resolved to embark on an indefinite strike beginning from 12 am, Monday, August 10, 2020 if there are no decisive and convincing actions from the Lagos State Government to address these concerns and challenges.”

JUDGMENT: Industrial Court dismisses entitlements claim against Ahoada East Local Government Council

0

His Lordship, Hon. Justice Zaynab Bashir of the Portharcourt Judicial Division of the National Industrial Court has dismissed the case filed by former councillors Hon. Nweze LoveGod and 2 others against Ahoada East Local Government Council of Rivers State on entitlements claim in its entirety for lacking merit.

The Court held that the former councilors failed to present particulars of the sums claimed and same leaves a dent on the success of their case in addition to the failure to present the body of law under which their statutory claim is made.

From facts, the claimants had submitted that they were former elected Councilors in the AHOADA EAST LOCAL GOVERNMENT and therefore entitled to N26,861,670.88k as severance gratuity and benefits by virtue of the provisions of the Rivers State Public and Political Officer Holders’ Salaries; Allowances and Benefits Law but the said monies were not paid by the Local government council.

In defence, the Defendant- AELGC submitted that it is not the Council that is responsible to make the payment that the issue of non-payment of severance benefits to Ex-political officer holders affects all Local Government Council in Rivers State, insisted that the Council are not liable to pay for the claims of the claimants added that the list of those who are owed have been submitted to the Governor urged the court to dismiss the suit for being frivolous and abuse of court process.

In opposition, learned Counsel to the claimants E.I. Ahiakwo Esq with B.E. Cheetan Esq contended that local government is entitled to pay political office holders who have completed their tenure in that local government council and that the law made reference only to the local government and not the state government.

Learned Counsel to the Council, G. C. Onuoha Esq, with V.N. Ihua-Maduenyi Esq and C.W. Amachree Esq argued further that Claimants who claimed entitlement never mentioned any section of the said law that compels or empowers the council to execute any part of the said Rivers State public and political office holders’ salaries, allowance and fringe benefit law.

Delivering Judgment, the presiding Judge Justice Zaynab Bashir held that Claimant did not present the provisions of the law under which it claims to be entitled to the terminal benefits claimed, to enable the court to ascertain the liability of the Defendant in the payment of same.

“However, I am mindful of the fact that the Defendant admitted that all the Claimants including 1st and 3rd Claimant were past Councilors and they are entitled to terminal benefits under the Rivers State Public and Political Office Holders’ Salaries Allowances and Fringe Benefits Law 2007 (as amended). In this regard, I am not oblivious of the position of the law that facts admitted needing no proof.

“I must quickly state at this juncture that notwithstanding the fact that the claim of the Claimants is statutory and the Defendant having acknowledged their entitlement to the terminal benefit payable by the state government, the sum sought to be ordered for payment by the Claimants is a specific sum which must be specifically proven as it requires specific particularization in pleadings and strict proof by evidence.

“Having painstakingly evaluated the said exhibitCW1(b) along with other exhibits, I must state that the Claimants who have the burden of proof have failed to proffer sufficient evidence before this court, thereby falling short of the requirement of proof, as the said Exhibit CW1(b) is not linked in any way with the specific sums claimed for each claimant to bring about a total of N26, 861,670.88k.”
