0
As part of the country’s crackdown on unscrupulous importers of tramadol drug, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has disclosed that it has intercepted another 607 cartons containing 11, 785, 800 tablets loaded with tramadol in Lagos.

It explained that the interception and investigation were with the assistance and cooperation of the Customs Area Command, Apapa in line with the agency mandate to end illegal importation of tramadol into the country.
NDLEA Chairman, Muhammad Abdallah, said that the agency would do everything within its powers to get to the root of the drug trade and enjoined other security agencies to collaborate with the agency in its ongoing investigation.
Through a statement by the agency’s Head of Public Affairs, Jonah Achema, the NDLEA boss noted that the recent discovery of tramadol importation using the same route from Pakistan Asia – Hamburg, Europe – Nigeria showed the dynamic system of operation by the drug cartel to beat security operatives.
“This was discovered in another container number TCNU 9465832 belonging to the same suspect transferred to NDLEA by the Police.
“This is making it 3 containers used to carefully conceal illegally imported tramadol and other medicines to Nigeria. This discovery is a major breakthrough in the fight against illegal importation of tramadol into Nigeria,” the statement said.

It would be recalled that the Police detectives in Apapa Area Command of Lagos State had intercepted a 40-foot container laden with drugs suspected to be tramadol and codeine on Aug. 6.

Also, another 40-foot container of 255 cartons of different types of tramadol and other banned medicines was discovered after further investigation by the joint examination team on Aug. 19.

Being a controlled opioid that was introduced for the treatment of serious pain, and as a narcotic analgesic, tramadol works in the brain to change how the body feels and responds to pain, online health portal, WebMD, states.

But, following the epidemic use of tramadol and codeine in Nigeria, the National Agency for Food, Drug Administration and other agencies have focused on the importation of the drugs in the country and how it is being distributed.

JUDGMENT: Industrial Court assumes jurisdiction, dismisses objection for lacking merit

0

The Vacation Judge, Lagos Judicial division of the National Industrial Court, His Lordship, Hon. Justice Isaac Essien has dismissed the preliminary objection filed by the National President- National Union Of Food, Beverage And Tobacco Employees, Comrade Lateef Oyelekan and 18 others challenging the jurisdiction of the Court to hear the matter brought by Comrade Abiodun Philip and 29 others for lacking merit.

The Court held that an intra union dispute which relates to the interpretation and application of the constitution of the union can be filed in the court and the court is vested with original jurisdiction to hear and determine the matter.

From facts, the Applicant had filed a preliminary objection sought for an order striking out/dismissing the suit for want of jurisdiction on the grounds that the case is an intra-union dispute which must be subjected to the provisions of the Trade Dispute Act, that the subject matter has been apprehended by the minister of Labour and Employment and the suit discloses no reasonable cause of action and also abuse of court process.

In response, Comrade Abiodun Philip and 29 others argued that by the content of the affidavit and the prayers sought for in the originating summons, the suit discloses a reasonable cause of action urged the court to dismiss the objection.

In his ruling, the presiding Judge, Justice Essien held that where the subject matter of intra union dispute revolves around or relates to the interpretation and application of a trade union constitution, that the court has original jurisdiction to hear any suit brought in that respect.

“It is, therefore, logical to say that intra union dispute cannot be brought to this court in its original jurisdiction. However, once the intra union dispute relates to the interpretation and application of the constitution of a trade union, S.2(1) of the Trade Dispute Act must bow to the superior authority of the constitution, this leads us to what was the subject matter of the originating process.”

Customs arrest 15 smugglers, seize N80m worth of contrabands in Kano

0

The Kano/Jigawa Command of the Nigeria Customs Service said it had arrested 15 persons and seized contraband items worth N80 million Duty Paid Value.

The Command’s Comptroller, Ahmad Nasir disclosed this while displaying the seized items before newsmen in Kano on Tuesday.

Nasir said the seizure and arrest were made within the last two months in various routes leading into the state adding that the suspects have been granted administrative bails while the items would be forfeited.

He identified Babura area in Jigawa State as the most notorious route for its men and officers, where it always battled with the smugglers.

While appealing to people of the area to desist from the smuggling activities as according to him he would write to Governor Badaru Abubakar to intervene in the matter.

“Today (Tuesday), we seized four trucks of 1,842 bags of expired fertilizer, 567 Jerricans of 25 litres of Vegetable oil and 53 bales of Second-hand clothes.

Other seized items include 1,608 bags of rice (50kg), 113 bags of foreign sugar (50kg), 278 compressed blocks of Indian hemp and 20 units of used vehicles and means of conveyance with a total DPV of N79.5 million,” he said.

He said the expired fertilizer is usually sold to innocent farmers. It is not good for our soil and not good for the food we eat. But smugglers are still circulating it in the country. Anything that will destroy our soil will destroy our economy.

He commended the DSS, Police and other sister security organisations for their support in intelligence gathering, sharing and collaboration.

BREAKING: Barcelona confirm Messi has told the club he is leaving

0

Barcelona have confirmed that their captain and star player Lionel Messi has told them he wants to leave this summer by terminating his contract.

The Association Press report that the Catalan giants contacted them directly on Tuesday to confirm that they have received documentation from the Argentine that he intends to quit the club immediately.

It confirms the multiple reports across Spanish and Argentinean media which claimed that Messi is leaving Barcelona and will attempt to activate a clause in his deal which allows him to break his contract.

Messi has won a record six Ballon d’Or awards during his spell at the Camp Nou, where he has spent the entirety of his professional career and firmly established himself as one of the greatest footballers ever to play the sport.

The 33-year-old has a clause in his deal allowing him to leave at the end of any season, and whilst it was thought that deadline passed in June, Marca say his camp believe that it has been extended in line with the prolonged 2019/20 season.

Messi has scored a scarcely believable 634 goals in 731 official appearances for Barcelona, but his time at the club now appears to be up and he is hopeful of becoming a free agent.

Rumours have been building that the six-time Ballon d’Or winner would look to move on ever since the humiliating 8-2 defeat to Bayern Munich in the Champions League earlier this month.

If Messi does indeed leave all eyes will turn to his next possible destination.

Manchester City may well be at the front of the queue, with the intriguing possibility of a reunion with his former manager Pep Guardiola potentially on the cards.

Momoh’s UNILAG Appointment Reward Of Service To APC – Sowore

0

Omoyele Sowore, the publisher of Sahara Reporters, has said the appointment of John Momoh as the acting Chairman of the Governing Council of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) is a reward for him being the media “lackey” of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Sowore made the claim in a post on Twitter on Tuesday while reacting to Momoh’s appointment.

Momoh, the Chief Executive Officer of Channels Television, was appointed as UNILAG’s Governing Council, according to a letter dated 21 August and signed by Sonny Echono, the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Education.

But Sowore, an alumnus of UNILAG, criticised the appointment, describing it as a “sad day” for the institution.

The activist-cum-journalist said Momoh will not perform better than Wale Babalakin, the Pro-Chancellor of the university, who was asked by the Federal Government to recuse himself following the leadership crisis in the institution.

Fani-Kayode Intolerant, Unstable, Says NUJ

0

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has condemned the outburst of Femi Fani-Kayode at a press conference in Calabar, the Cross River State capital.

In a statement signed by Chris Isiguzo, NUJ President, he described the politician as unstable and intolerant for his outburst and threats against Eyo Charles, the correspondent of the Daily Trust Newspaper.

“By denigrating the journalist, Fani Kayode has exposed himself the more as an intolerant and unstable person who will not want his activities closely scrutinised by the Media.

“It is instructive to remind the likes of Fani Kayode that it is the Constitutional right of Journalists to monitor and keep a check on people and institutions in power.

“By delving into politics and holding political office, Fani Kayode is very conversant with the watchdog role of the media.

“For him to have embarked on assessment of projects in some states, even though we are yet to be told under what platform, he is doing so, it is proper for the media to hold him to account for his actions and decisions.

“His reaction was totally unacceptable, dishonourable and reprehensible and we demand for retraction of his untoward, irritating and awkward utterances which negate simple decorum and civility,” the statement read in part.

Isiguzo described as shocking that Fani-Kayode had attacked a journalist over a mere question while he used his won social media handles to call government officials to account.

Obadiah Mailafia resigns from NIPSS, gives reason

0

Obadiah Mailafia, a former Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, has said that he has resigned from the National Institute of Policy and Strategic Studies, NIPSS.

He said he had to resign because of ongoing killings in Southern Kaduna affecting his people.

Recall that the former CBN Deputy Governor has been grilled twice by the Department of State Services (DSS) in Jos Office over his recent comments on the killings and Boko Haram terrorists.

“I have resigned from NIPPS,” he told Daily Trust.

“Nobody asked me or pressurized me to resign. I did it on my own.

“I decided that I cannot continue working, with all my good conscience, when my people are continually being killed and genocide is being committed against my people.

“That was the reason I gave, and the management has accepted my resignation,” he added.

He explained that he gave NIPPS one month’s notice from 18th August to 18th September when his resignation will take effect.

Mailafia maintained that his resignation is for the best interest of everybody.

Mailafia, a former presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress, ADC, had last Monday honoured another invitation by the Department of State Services (DSS).

GOTD recalls that it was the second time in five days that the DSS is interrogating Mailafia over comments he made on radio, concerning Boko Haram.

Mailafia had among other things, alleged that a repentant bandit told him that a serving northern governor was a commander of the terrorist group.

Ogunsola was elected as acting Vice-Chancellor after she secured 135 of 167 votes, thereby polling the highest number of votes in the election held by members of the UNILAG Senate on Monday.

Ogunsola, a professor of medical microbiology, becomes the first female to occupy such a position in the institution’s 58th-year history.

She was the provost of College of Medicine, University of Lagos, and the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Development Services at the UNILAG before her emergence as acting Vice-Chancellor.
