African Leaders Chart Path For Continental Growth At Focus Africa Leadership Forum

0

As global trade tensions intensify among the world’s economic giants, African leaders and policymakers gathered in Abuja for the 2025 edition of the Focus Africa Leaders Forum and Awards, aimed at rethinking the continent’s economic strategy in a shifting global landscape

Delivering the keynote address, former Governor of Abia State, Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu, emphasized the urgent need for Africa to transition from exporting raw materials to producing and selling value-added products in the global market. He stated that this transformation is essential for wealth creation, job growth, and economic sustainability.

Dr. Ikpeazu explained that the continent must begin to craft and implement a clear and strategic vision that aligns with the realities of a multipolar world where power and influence are distributed across various nations. According to him, “The time of waiting for grants and sympathy is over. We must rise and take responsibility for our future. No one else will do it for us.”

He further noted that Africa’s economic vision must transcend political transitions, urging that national development plans should be sustainable enough to outlive any single administration. He said leadership may change, but the overarching dream must continue through successive governments and citizen support.

Dr. Ikpeazu also stressed the importance of supporting small businesses and local enterprises, which he described as the backbone of African economies. He added that intra-African trade should no longer be considered optional, but rather a vital necessity for the continent’s economic future. “Step by step, with steady focus and good planning, we can build trade and manufacturing systems that will lift Africa out of poverty and hopelessness,” he said.

Professor Sucex Bright (middle)

Also, Director of the Focus Africa Series, Professor Sucex Bright, explained that the project was established to convene high-level discussions around governance, economic policy, and the future of African development. He stated that the forum aims to spotlight transformative projects that can position the continent more prominently on the global stage.

Professor Bright noted that every African has a role to play in shaping the continent’s trajectory, and the forum provides an inclusive platform for dialogue and collaboration. He said, “We are bringing every single person to the discussion table to speak on how we can move the continent forward.”

Addressing the role of youth in Africa’s growth, Professor Bright also stated that development efforts must blend the energy of the young with the wisdom of the old, highlighting the importance of intergenerational cooperation in achieving sustainable progress.

Making a case for Forensic Science

Another critical voice at the forum was that of Director General of the Institute of Security and Forensic Studies Nigeria, Ambassador Dr. Morgan Okocha, who underscored the transformative impact of forensic science in strengthening Nigeria’s justice system and security apparatus. He emphasized that integrating forensic science into criminal investigations significantly improves the reliability and efficiency of evidence gathering and prosecution.

Dr. Okocha highlighted the recent implementation of the Evidence Act (Amendment Act) 2023 as a landmark achievement for Nigeria’s legal framework. He noted that the new law, which allows for the admissibility of digital evidence such as electronic records and signatures, brings Nigeria in line with modern investigative standards.

He also advocated for continued legal reforms and enhanced training for law enforcement officers, stressing that strategic security policies and specialized skill development are critical to overcoming emerging threats. According to him, “We have trained thousands of security personnel through our organization, Security and Forensic Studies Nigeria (SFSN), and this has greatly improved the effectiveness of criminal investigations nationwide.”

Dr. Okocha further explained that the integration of forensic science and strategic reforms holds immense promise for revamping Nigeria’s security framework. He said this combination will enable the country to address security challenges with more precision and accountability.

Speaking with journalists on the sidelines of the forum, Dr. Okocha, reiterated the importance of forensic science in promoting peace and justice. He noted that his organization has trained over 10,000 security personnel, which has led to significant advancements in criminal investigations across Nigeria and other African nations.

He concluded by expressing optimism that with continued investment in forensic capacity and legal modernization, Nigeria’s security infrastructure can evolve into a more proactive, credible, and resilient system capable of delivering justice and protecting lives.

Dr. Sani Aliu Calls for Strategic Security Reform and Adoption of NESO in National Framework

Alhaji Sani

Additionally, Dr. Sani Aliyu, Co-Commander-in-General of the Neighborhood Enlightenment and Safety Organization (NESO), called for urgent strategic reforms in Nigeria’s security architecture, urging President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to take bold steps in aligning the country with global and continental expectations of leadership.

Speaking at a recent leadership recognition event, Dr. Aliyu said such events play a vital role in reawakening the sense of responsibility among leaders by refocusing them on national challenges and helping them strategize more effectively for development.

Addressing Nigeria’s persistent security challenges, he explained that the country’s inability to match its growing population with adequate security personnel has left it vulnerable. “We are dealing with over 237 million people spread across 923,768 square kilometers, yet our total security personnel—including the military, police, DSS, and others—number less than a million,” he noted. “With over 10,000 porous and unmanned borders, insecurity becomes inevitable.”

He emphasized that Nigeria must live up to its position as the leader of the black race globally, recalling Nelson Mandela’s assertion that “if Nigeria sneezes, Africa catches a cold.” He added that for Africa to progress, Nigeria must first regain its strength and stability.

Dr. Aliyu commended President Tinubu and the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, for acknowledging the need for Special Forces. He likened this move to former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s creation of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) to safeguard critical infrastructure.

He urged the president to take it a step further by sending an executive bill to the National Assembly to formally adopt NESO into the national security framework. “NESO has been on the frontlines, complementing the efforts of the military in the fight against terrorism. In fact, it was NESO’s idea that led to the creation of the Civilian Joint Task Force,” he stated.

Dr. Aliyu concluded by stressing that the 70,000 well-trained NESO members nationwide represent a ready force that can be deployed with minimal government spending, helping Nigeria reclaim its rightful place as Africa’s leading nation.

Ahead of the party’s national convention, the Peoples Democratic Party Governors Forum (PDPGF) has appointed Governor Douye Diri of Bayelsa State as chair of the committee on zoning of its party offices.

Also appointed were the governors of Zamfara and Plateau states, Dauda Lawal and Caleb Mutfwang as vice chair and secretary respectively of the committee.

The forum equally recommended the constitution of a National Convention Committee headed by the Adamawa State Governor, Ahmadu Fintiri with Governor Ademola Adeleke of Osun State as vice chair and the Enugu State Governor, Peter Mbah, as secretary.

This was contained in a statement on Monday by Chief Press Secretary to Governor of Bayelsa State, Daniel Alabrah.

According to the statement, these recommendations, which are subject to ratification by the National Working Committee and the National Executive Committee of the party, were part of the communique issued after the forum’s meeting on Monday at the Oyo State Governor’s Office in Ibadan.

The PDPGF Chairman and Governor of Bauchi State, Senator Bala Mohammed, who read the communique, also stated that the governors resolved that the PDP will not join any coalition or be part of a merger of political parties ahead of the 2027 elections.

The forum restated its decision to approach the Supreme Court to give a clear interpretation on the declaration of a state of emergency in any state and reaffirmed its commitment to stand with suspended Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State.

The communique reads in part: “Noting the nationwide speculations about possible merger of political parties, groups and/or associations, the Forum resolved that the PDP will not join any coalition or merger. However, the PDP as a major opposition party welcomes any party, persons or groups that are willing to join it with a view to wresting power and enthroning good leadership in 2027.

“The Forum reiterates its position taken in Asaba on the issue of the National Secretary of the party, but in the wake of the Supreme Court judgment, Forum resolved to recommend that the Deputy National Secretary acts as National Secretary, pending the nomination and ratification of a Substantive Secretary from the South East Zone and NEC respectively at its next meeting.

“The Forum reasserts our collective determination to avert a rape of our constitutional democracy hence the decision of approaching the Supreme Court to give a clear cut verdict on the interpretation of the provisions of the law on the declaration of State of Emergency in any state.

“The Forum restates its solidarity with His Excellency, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, on the ordeal into which his state and people are being plunged by the declaration of a state of emergency. And we reiterate our commitment to stand with him till the end.

“The Forum finds alarming the worsening security situation in the country, as evidenced in parts of the country especially Borno, Plateau, Katsina and Edo States. The Forum calls for review and reordering of priorities and strategies, including adopting a bottom-up template that guarantees the sub-nationals to constitute an effective line of defence against security breaches.

“While raising the concerns above, we condemn the recent attacks in Plateau State, and commiserate with the government and people of the state, especially those who lost their lives and property during this unfortunate mishap.

“The Forum resolves that working in conjunction with the National Working Committee (NWC) and other relevant organs of the party, to hold a NEC Meeting on the 27th of May, 2025; constitute a Zoning Committee that will address all issues relating to zoning of party offices and hold an early convention in August 2025, precisely on the 28th, 29th and 30th in the ancient city of Kano.

Eedris Abdulkareem’s anti-Tinubu song gains streams as Soyinka slams NBC

0

Veteran Nigerian rapper Eedris Abdulkareem’s protest track, “Tell Your Papa,” has recorded a remarkable milestone despite being banned by the National Broadcasting Commission.

The song, which criticises President Bola Tinubu’s administration, has gathered the attention of several Nigerians and has been making waves on social media.

According to the statistics on YouTube, ‘Tell Your Papa’ has 22,754 views on YouTube with 1,200 likes and the video numbers have since skyrocketed to 82,138 views and 2,600 likes, on YouTube too, indicating a surge in popularity amid the controversy.

On Spotify, the song has also reached a notable milestone with over 30,116 streams, indicating that Nigerians are still streaming the song despite the ban.

The NBC sparked criticism after it banned “Tell Your Papa” from airplay on April 10.

The commission cited a breach of broadcasting code, but, Eedris Abdulkareem responded by condemning the government for suppressing dissent and constructive criticism.

He likened the ban to the censorship of his iconic hit “Jaga Jaga” in 2004, accusing the current administration of being “insensitive and vindictive”.

Abdulkareem took to Instagram to express his views on the ban, stating, “It’s obvious that in Nigeria, truth and constructive criticism is always deemed a big crime by the government.”

The ban was also faulted by the Performing Musicians Association of Nigeria, which predicted that the ban would be counterproductive and make people want to stream it more.

Similarly, in a statement on Sunday, Nobel laureate Professor Wole Soyinka also condemned the NBC over the ban, describing it as a return to the culture of censorship and a threat to the right to free expression.

In a statement issued from New York University, Abu Dhabi, on Sunday, Soyinka criticised the action and its wider implications, saying it echoed past attempts to stifle artistic and socio-political commentary in Nigeria.

He expressed irony in suggesting that the ban did not go far enough, stating, “It is not only the allegedly offensive record that should be banned – the musician himself should be proscribed. Next, PMAN, or whatever musical association of which Abdulkareem is a member, should also go under the hammer.”

The literary icon warned that such censorship was not only counterproductive but also dangerous to democratic development.

Soyinka urged the relevant regulatory body to reverse what he described as a “petulant irrationality,” warning that any government that only tolerates praise-singers has already commenced a downhill slide into the abyss.”

Soyinka noted that he had not listened to the banned song but stressed that the issue transcends content and concerns a fundamental democratic principle.

“The ban is a boost to the artist’s nest egg, thanks to free governmental promotion. Mr. Abdulkareem must be currently warbling his merry way all the way to the bank. I envy him,” he added.

Some fans have also reacted to the ban on the song.

A fan on YouTube, Sheggzyunited, wrote, “Naija government, this is 2025, for goodness sake. There is no single lie in the song.”

Asa Anthony also wrote, “They were too quick to ban it because the message was well passed. We mount on streaming platforms and social media.”

A user on Instagram, directorjoelmatt, said, “Our government don’t like the truth.”

Any Government That Fails to Protect Citizens Shouldn’t Last – Monguno

0

Mohammed Monguno, senator representing Borno north, says any government that fails to guarantee the safety of its citizens does not deserve to remain in power.

Speaking to News Central in Maiduguri after a security meeting, Monguno, a member of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), said the gathering was convened to address the resurgence of Boko Haram attacks in Borno state.

“We decided to meet the security chiefs against the background of the resurgence of the Boko Haram insurgency in the nooks and crannies of the state,” the chief whip of the senate said.

“We decided to see them with a view to alerting them about the resurgence of the Boko Haram insurgency and also the need to deploy more men and resources back to the theatre that has been hitherto redeployed to the north-western part of the country.

“To be redeployed back to the theatre in the north-east and in particular in Borno state in order to combat the Boko Haram insurgency.”

The senator stated that security is the fundamental purpose of government.

“Security is the primacy of governance. The whole essence of government is to guarantee the peace, order, and good governance of its citizens, as well as protecting the lives and property of the people,” he said.

“That is the primary purpose of government.

“Any government that fails and or neglects to perform that primary duty of guaranteeing peace, order, and good governance, that government is not supposed to last a minute longer than absolutely necessary.”

He said all actors within the security architecture were brought together to brainstorm on restoring peace to Borno.

“So, it was against this background that we decided to bring together all actors in the security architecture under one roof with a view to bonding, cross-fertilising ideas,” Monguno added.

“For the purpose of ameliorating the security challenges that we have in our senatorial district, especially against the background of the fact that our senatorial district has been ravaged by the Boko Haram insurgency.”

Babagana Zulum, governor of Borno, recently expressed concern over the resurgence of Boko Haram attacks and kidnappings across the state.

Zulum spoke on April 8 at a high-level security meeting attended by military commanders, traditional rulers, and other stakeholders.

Lawyer Condemns Oye-Ekiti University statement on alleged Vice Chancellor Sexual Harassment

0

One of the leading legal practitioners, Barrister Ajibola Bello has strongly condemned the statement issued by the Governing Counci, Federal University, Oye-Ekiti over alleged Sexual Harassment at Workplace on the Vice Chancellor, Professor Abayomi Sunday Fasina.

Barrister Ajibola alleged that upon listening to the audio conversation which Engr. Adebayo recorded, it is glaring to the blind and the deaf that Engr. Adebayo was being sexually harassed by the VC, and the harassment can be pursued both as a civil and crimimal matter.

The statement read thus:

Sexual Harassment at Workplace: A Condemnation of the Press Release by the Governing Counci, Federal University, Oye-Ekiti Made on 8th April, 2025.

By:

Ajibola Bello, Esq.

I have read the Press Release made by the Office of the Registrar, Federal University Oye-Ekiti on the 8th of April, 2025, particularly with regards to the issue of sexual harassment between the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Abayomi Sunday Fasina and a viable and prominent staff of the University, Engr. Folashade Adebayo, and the irrefutable conclusion I could make from the publication vis-a-vis the audio recording I listened to, is that the said Engr. Adebayo has been unfairly victimised, while the report makes bold appraisal to myopically vindicate the VC, thereby concretising the narrative that in cases of sexual harassment, there is always an unequal bargaining power and the party with the greater weight will unjustly supervene, which makes it very difficult for victims of workplace harassment to come out vindicated and freed from oppression.

Reading the report, it was clear that the members of the panel had been bought over by the VC as they deliberately came out boldly to turn the table by asserting that Engr. Adebayo was set out to blackmail the VC while also alleging that  Engr. Adebayo dragged the name of the university in disrepute and posited that they condemned the recording made without his knowledge.

Bearing the report in mind, the truth of the matter is that upon listening to the audio conversation which Engr. Adebayo recorded, it is glaring to the blind and the deaf that Engr. Adebayo was being sexually harassed by the VC and the harassment can be pursued both as a civil and crimimal matter.

The conversation was in a mixture of yoruba and English language, and for clarity, the VC was asking Engr. Adebayo be more than just a workplace associate but a lover. Engr. Adebayo repeatedly told the VC that they were both married and she couldn’t go beyond being a responsible staff and member of the VC’s management team.

The VC proceeded to cite example of married people he knew in the US and Canada who were “relating” and “helping” eachother with symbiotic relationships.  Engr. Adebayo told the VC that she has been helping the VC by praying for him to which the VC retorted that, “mio ni gba o” – meaning “I will not give up”. The VC said there are other ladies chasing after him, that they are even more beautiful, but they are not as intelligent as Engr. Adebayo.

The VC told Engr. Adebayo that “I so much like you”, he went as far as saying that he challenged the Registrar who was contending against Engr. Adebayo. Saying that he paid two tranches of N10million for the Registrar to get his appointment which was not merited, hence, he should not challenge Engr. Adebayo. This was in a bid to make Engr. Adebayo give in to his demand.

The VC went as far as saying that at one point, if he were desperate, he would have come to meet Engr. Adebayo in her room after a meeting and Engr. Adebayo responded that she wouldn’t have opened the door. The conversation clearly paints a picture of a subordinate respectfully rejecting the advances of a superior without wanting to be abusive or offensive. Yet, the VC kept saying he is not giving up.

While there is a lot more to be deduced from the audio conversation, let’s make it clear that in highlight, the act of the  VC in wanting an amorous relationship from Engr. Adebayo in exchange for administrative favours, and stating that it was because of how he “feels for her that he added her to the Management team” is an harassment in quid pro quo form and a corrupt practice by a Public Officer which runs contrary to the provisions of sections 10, 18 and 19 of the Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Act, 2000. The ICPC as the relevant law enforcement agency in this regard is accordingly urged to wade in and take necessary actions on the admissions made by the VC in the audio recording.

From a civil right perspective, it is important to mention that the National Industrial Court of Nigeria (NICN) has since been vested with jurisdiction to handle matters of sexual harassment at workplace, and I believe that beyond the kangaroo conclusion made by the Governing Council, purportedly vindicating the VC, the NICN would be the best umpire in evaluating the happenstance between the VC and Engr. Adebayo, and in coming to a just conclusion as to whether or not, there was sexual harassment. For avoidance of doubt, the NICN Rules, particularly Order 14 Rule 1 categorises sexual harassment at workplace into four, that is: physical conduct, verbal, non-verbal and quid pro quo harassment. The Quid pro quo especially covers situations where an owner, employer, supervisor, member of management or co-employee undertakes or attempts to influence or influences the process of employment, promotion, training, discipline, dismissal, salary increments or other benefits of an employee or job applicant in exchange for sexual favours.

The foregoing indicates clearly that contrary to the hasty, flawed and biased conclusion of the Council, sexual harassment isn’t until a  person is “touched”. Insisting on having an amorous relationship with a subordinate is clearly sexual harassment going by the wordings of the NICN Rules of Court. All that a complainant has to do is to present cogent, concrete and convincing evidence which I strongly believe that Engr. Adebayo possess.

On a general note, the Press Release of the FUOYE Governing Council should be taken with a pinch of salt and disregarded, while I equally urge persons (females especially) who might be facing cases of societal or workplace sexual harassment to not be deterred from speaking out as the law has been set in motion to set you free.
