NSF 2024: Team Bayelsa Takes Early Lead

Team Bayelsa continued their impressive performance in the ongoing 22nd National Sports Festival in Abeokuta, Ogun State tagged the 2024 Gateway Games after day three of the fiesta.

Bayelsa state has so far won 32 medal comprising 16 gold, 10 silver and 6 bronze medal after day two of the 2024 Gateway Games with swimming, wrestling, Karate, kickboxing and volleyball yet to commence.

Weightlifting has won 12 medal, gold, 3 silver and 3 bronze medal. Kung-fu has produced 18 medal, 9 gold, 7 silver and 2 bronze after day two of the Nigeria’s version of the Olympics.

Taekwondo has one gold, one bronze as the 22nd National Sports Festival continues.

According to the official medal table Team Bayelsa are currently leading the table with 9 medal, 6 gold, 2 silver, 1 bronze while Oyo State on second with 6 medal, 4 gold, 1 silver and 1 bronze medal.

Lagos on third position with 3 gold, 4 silver, 3 bronze making it a total of 10 medal, closely followed by Cross River on 3 gold, Rivers State on 5th place on 3 gold, 3 gold and 1 bronze amassing a total of six medal.

Prosperity Cup 2025: Former Champions, EGM On Course, As More Teams Secure Round of 16 Qualification

More teams have qualified for the round of 16 of Nigeria’s biggest grassroots football spectacle, the Bayelsa Governor’s Football Tournament tagged the Prosperity Cup.

In the latest round of games decided on Tuesday, Royal All Stars of Yenagoa edged out Water Strikers FC of Twon Brass by two unreplied goals at the Imiringi centre to progress. Nation Ogogo opened the scoring for the Yenagoa side on 50 minutes from a beautiful header, with Charles Richard increasing the tally on 75 minutes to end the tie at two nil.

In the second match at the Imiringi turf, former champions and tournament favourites, Eternal Grace Ministry, EGM FC of Yenagoa whitewashed Okoroba FC four nil to keep their hopes of winning the tournament alive.

Taiwo Ola opened the floodgate of goals just five minutes into the game with a perfect finish. Noble Junior made it two nil on 17 minutes from a long range shot. Just before the break, Noble Junior increased the goal margin to three for his brace. Caleb Chukwu completed the rout with a clinical finish in the 90th minute to send Okoroba FC of Nembe packing.

At the Amassoma centre, Advance Dreams FC of Yenagoa humbled Indomitable Lions FC of Sagbama two nil, with both goals coming in the second half.

Goodluck Bunizibe and Opukeme Kenneth kept the dreams of Advance Dreams alive with two beautiful goals in the 57 and 68 minutes to show their older opponents the exit door.

In a rather dramatic, pulsating and interesting second encounter at the Amassoma venue, hard fighting Akeddei FC of Sagbama overpowered Creek Haven All Stars by three goals to one to keep their aspirations of winning the tournament alive.

Agbere FC of Agbere beat hard fighting Akenfa FC of Yenagoa 4-2 on penalties after a barren draw in normal time at the Samson Siasia Stadium, Bayelsa United Feeders FC defeated Fury Titans FC of Amassoma by three goals to one in the later game at the same venue to put their defeat at the Yenagoa local government finals behind them.

Daniel Austin put the entertaining Bayelsa United Feeders side in front on 25 minutes, before Stanley Edor made it two on 46 minutes from a well-connected pass.

Bethel Obadiah made the scoreline safe for the young Prosperity Boys from a beautiful volley to make it three nil in the 60th ensure, before Fury Titans FC’s consolation goal in the 63 minute by Jacob Ogbe.

Matches at the Ayamasa Centre between Youbolobo FC of Agge, Sampou FC of Sampou, Tara Lions of Egbema-Angalabiri and Adaka FC of Kaiama will be played on Wednesday 21st, May, 2025 at the Samson Siasia stadium by 10.00am. and 12.00p.m. respectively.

Both matches were rescheduled and moved to Yenagoa, because of a heavy downpour that rendered the Ayamasa field unplayable.

The Director-General of the Bayelsa Governor’s Football Tournament, popularly known as the Prosperity Cup, Mr. Ono Akpe, has congratulated Bayelsa Queens on their emergence as champions in the Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) Premiership.

The team secured the top spot following a dominant 4-1 victory over Naija Ratels on the final day of the Super Six playoffs. Mr. Akpe extended his congratulations to the team, also known as the Prosperity Girls, on behalf of the Central Organizing Committee (COC).

He expressed delight in the team’s triumph, attributing their success to their outstanding performance during the regular season.

The DG commended the team’s doggedness, indomitable disposition, and can-do spirit, describing them as worthy ambassadors of Bayelsa State.

Mr. Akpe specially commended the Governor of Bayelsa State, Senator Douye Diri, for his unwavering support and vision for sports development in the state. “The Governor’s huge investment in sports has yielded dividends, and this victory is a testament to his leadership,” Akpe said.

He also extended his appreciation to the Deputy Governor, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, and the Commissioner for Sports Development, Hon. Daniel Baraladei Igali, for their support and encouragement.

A first half brace from Abraham Ayibaitari gave Nembe City of Nembe Local Government Area a two nil victory over Peace FC of Yenagoa in the round of 32 fixture of Nigeria’s biggest grassroots football spectacle, the Bayelsa Governor’s Football Tournament tagged the Prosperity Cup at Otuasega Township Stadium on Monday.

Ayibaitari, who helped his team to clinch the Nembe LGA title, put Nembe City FC in front on 36 minutes from a left-footed delivery. Ayibaitari doubled the scores a minute later to complete his brace, having taken full control of the game.

Playing at the same venue, former champions, Crusaders FC of Peretorugbene beat Mountain of Fire and Miracle Ministry, MFM FC to qualify for the round of 16. Vincent Great’s brace on 32 and 54 minutes propelled the Ekeremor champions into the round of 16.

At the Nembe City Stadium, Sangana FC of Brass LGA beat Ayalla FC of Okiki in Ogbia LGA by three goals to two in a keenly contested encounter to secure qualification. Super George drew the first blood for Sangana FC just four minutes into the game through a beautiful header, Matthew Tobin increased the tally for the Brass side in the 7th minute..

Gibson Haukins reduced the deficit for the Ogbia side in the 29th minute to make it 2-1 at halftime. It was barely 5 minutes on the resumption of the second half, Matthew Tobin, scored again to make it three goals to one, but Ayalla FC responded swiftly on 54 minutes to close the tie at 3-2 in favour of the team from the Southern most community of Nigeria and pride of the Akassa clan.

Ogbia champions, Citiboi FC of Imiringi survived a resurgence Igoni FC of Odioma in Twon Brass 3-0 on penalties after a one all draw in regulation time. Pere Richard gave Citiboi FC the lead on 48 minutes after a barren draw in the first 45 minutes.. Igoni FC replied on 78 minutes through Ofunajo George’s volley, the two sides settled for the lottery of penalties to decide the winner..

At the Samson Siasia Stadium in Yenagoa, Federal University, Otuoke FC shocked Afini FC of Yenagoa 4-3 on penalties after a 1-1 draw in regulation time to progress into the round of 16.

In the second match at the same venue, Professor Nimibofa Ayawei PNA FC, of Koluama in Southern Ijaw LGA ousted Seaside Academy by two goals to nothing to record their 19th goal of the competition, without conceding any..

Sagbama LGA champions, Agbere FC of Agbere will face hard-fighting Akenfa FC by 1.00p.m. while Bayelsa United Feeders will lock horns with Fury Titans FC of Amassoma by 3.00p.m. at the Samson Siasia Stadium, Yenagoa.

Indomitable Lions FC of Sagbama will trade tackles with Advance Dreams FC of Yenagoa by 1.00p.m. at the Amassoma centre., while one the tournament’s surprise teams Akeddei FC of Akeddei in Sagbama LGA will battle hard fighting Creek Haven All Stars of Yenagoa at the same venue by 3.00p.m.

NDDC Conducts Computer Tests for 6,000 Scholarship Applicants

The Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC, has conducted a Computer-Based Test, CBT, for 6,000 applicants from the nine Niger Delta states for its Foreign Postgraduate Scholarship programme.

Speaking at the Information and Communication Technology Centre of the Rivers State University, Port Harcourt, where the tests were conducted, the NDDC Executive Director, Finance and Administration, Alabo Boma Iyaye, said that the Commission was intentional about its human capacity development programmes.

He stated: “The successful applicants for the Computer-Based Test are drawn from all nine Niger Delta states, and there are several test sessions spread over three days.

We had some challenges during the shortlisting process due to some applicants’ inability to submit the relevant information and documents.”

The Executive Director observed that the financial burden of the foreign scholarship was huge.

However, he assured the Commission would sustain the programme and introduce new components by including scholarships in local universities.

Iyaye announced that the NDDC would introduce scholarships for undergraduate students in Nigerian universities.

“This will enable us to accommodate more persons in the scholarship programme,” he said.

The NDDC Director of Education, Health and Social Services, Dr George Uzonwanne, noted that the scholarship programme, started in 2010, was designed to produce top-level professionals with technical knowledge, capacity, and expertise to compete in the oil and gas industry and other sectors.

He said: “The Scholarship Programme will equip our young people with relevant training and skills for effective participation in the local content programme of the Federal Government, as well as enable them to acquire specialisation in their fields of study to compete globally in various disciplines.
Uzonwanne expressed optimism that the transparent process of selecting beneficiaries for the foreign scholarship scheme would continue to produce first-class performers.

He stated that the scholarship programme covered science disciplines, including engineering, agricultural science, environmental science, geosciences, information technology, and management sciences. Others are law and architecture.

NDDC Backs Legal Advocacy For Niger Delta Development

The Managing Director of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), Dr Samuel Ogbuku, says legal advocacy on issues affecting the region is essential for driving its development.

Ogbuku made this known while opening this year’s NDDC MOOT and Mock Trial Competition for Universities in the Niger Delta region in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

In a statement by NDDC Director, Corporate Affairs Seledi Thompson-Wakama, Ogbuku reminded the participants that the Commission was interested in the growth of the region’s youth.

Ogbuku, who was represented by the Executive Director of Finance and Administration, Alabo Boma Iyaye. stated that the Commission would continue to support the growth of education in the region.

The NDDC boss noted that the Commission had intervened in the educational sector severally and built hostels in various universities and polytechnics in the Niger Delta region.

In a keynote Address, the former Attorney-General of Rivers State, Professor Zaccheus Adangor SAN, explained that the legal profession had remained noble, honorable, and learned.He challenged the students to maintain integrity in their journey in legal practice.

The legal luminary counselled participants to note that people bring their issues to the court to get justice, and as such, lawyers should be persons of good character with trustworthy attributes.

While thanking the NDDC for sponsoring the competition, he advised students to be open to learning and ideas, considering that the legal profession demanded sound knowledge in various areas.

He insisted that honesty, integrity, and good character were essential virtues that every legal practitioner needed.

Professor Adangor maintained that lawyers should invest in knowledge as ministers in the temple of Justice, urging legal practitioners to always buy soft and hard copies of books.
Prof Adangor emphasised the importance of moving with new trends and following all the changes in the legal profession.

The Chairman of the occasion, a Judge of the Rivers State High Court, Justice Daketima Gabriel Kio, acknowledged that NDDC, led by Ogbuku, had made a significant and positive difference in the region’s development.

According to him, the Moot and Mock Trial competition, supported by the NDDC, would be a good platform for regional integration and law students to become successful legal practitioners.

Earlier in his welcome address, the NDDC Acting Director, Legal Services, Sir Victor Arenyeka. expressed joy that last year’s moot competition was impactful and considered one of the best in the country by stakeholders.

He noted that NDDC designed the competition to prepare students from the region on issues affecting Niger Delta region, such as Environmental Law, Oil and Gas and Sustainable Development.

The chairman of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, UK, Port Harcourt branch, Mr. Emeka Onyeka, described the sponsorship of the competition by NDDC as one of the best investments made by the Commission.

He encouraged students to use the knowledge judiciously.
About twenty law Faculties from Universities in the Niger Delta region participated in the competition and were gifted the latest edition of the Nigerian weekly law reports by the NDDC.

It was a joyous moment as stakeholders in the sports sector across the country converged on Yenagoa, the Bayelsa State capital to inaugurate a world class ultra-modern table tennis facility, the “Coastal Fortress”.

The Coastal Fortress is a state-of-the-art facility built by Ama-Ebi Ebikpolade Stow, the chairman of the Bayelsa State Table Tennis Association to give table tennis players adequate preparation for tournaments.

Inaugurating the beautiful edifice, Governor Douye Diri who was accompanied by his deputy, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo and other political appointees, noted that the initiator of the project, Mr. Ama-Ebi Ebikpolade Stow has written his name in gold, describing the event as a momentous occasion.

He noted that sports development remains one of the key pillars of his administration’s “Assured” Prosperity programme, maintaining that sports is one area that can positively take the youths away from crime and criminality.

According to the state helmsman, sports has given the youths in the state a means of livelihood apart from education, stating that sports as a skill has ensured many youths in the world are self-reliant.

He noted that team Nigeria’s brilliant outing in the just-concluded African Senior Wrestling Championship in Casablanca, Morocco was a reflection of the huge investment in the development of sports, saying that wrestling remains a sport in which Bayelsa enjoys comparative advantage.

Governor Diri, while appreciating the Bayelsa State Table Tennis Association chairman for his investment in table tennis, asserted that Mr. Stow has reduced the pressure on government, urging other well meaning Bayelsans to invest in sports development.

Governor Diri equally announced the appointment of the South South representative of the Nigeria Table Tennis Federation, as Technical Adviser to the governor on sports, Table Tennis, describing him as a role model to the younger generation.

“As you know, sports development is one of the key pillars of our Assured development programme. Sports is one area we can use to remove our youths from crime and criminality”

“For me, it brings a very great pleasure to be here to see what this young man has done. I believe this facility will be so beneficial to the people of Bayelsa State and Nigeria”, Governor Diri stated.

Director General of the National Sports Commission, Hon Bukola Olapade, represented by the Special Advisers to DG on sports Mr. Ebidowei Oweifie, said the event was a testament of the governor’s unwavering passion for sports development.

Earlier in his address of welcome, Commissioner for Sports Development Dr. Daniel Igali, opined that the development of sports would not be complete without good facilities, pointing out that Mr. Stow’s gesture has lifted the soul of the government.

In a remark, chairman of the Bayelsa State Table Association, Mr. Ama-Ebi Ebikpolade Stow, reflected on his journey in table tennis, which began in 2018 when he served as Vice Chairman under former Director of Sports, Chief Patimidi Tukuru.

He explained that the Fortress is more than a personal venture but a contribution to the sporting future of Bayelsa State, and that the facility is designed to close the gap between the kids of the poor and the rich, stressing that every athlete would be treated with equal opportunity, regardless of background.

The NTTF South South rep noted that the facility is equipped with a range of modern amenities designed to support both training and comfort which includes, two restaurants, chairman’s office, reception, sports lounges, separate changing rooms for athletes and four conveniences.

In separate goodwill messages, Senator Benson Agadaga, the Senator representing Bayelsa East who doubles as chairman of the occasion and Chairman House Committee on Sports, Hon Tare Porri, appreciated the vision bearer Ama-Ebi Ebikpolade Stow for complimenting the government’s efforts, adding that the facility would keep young people in the state busy.

The highpoint of the event was the unveiling of the foreign coach, Luciano Esposito from Italy as well as Bayelsa State Table Tennis Team to the National Sports Festival in Abeokuta, Ogun State.

Citiboi FC of Imiringi has dethroned Movers FC of Otuasega as Ogbia champions of Nigeria’s biggest grassroots football spectacle, the Bayelsa Governor’s Football Tournament tagged the Prosperity Cup

Citiboi FC beat hard fighting Movers FC of Otuasega 5-4 on penalties after a barren draw in regulation time in an encounter decided at the Imiringi Township stadium, without the local government chairman, Hon Jeremiah Golden and members of his cabinet in attendance.

Despite the absence of the Ogbia Council chairman, the game lived up to expectation with a massive turnout of fans.

The Movers FC trio of Elton Mina, Precious Omonibo and Appah Sydney on three occasions in the first half came close but could not convert their chances despite dominating proceedings to the admiration of the fans.

Citiboi FC came into the game in the second half, but the former Ogbia champions proved impregnable as their defence line of Azibalua Jerome, Ola Elton and Benard Amikpo rose to the occasion to cut off every goal bound move by the Citiboi FC attacking lineup.

Speaking to reporters, the victorious Head Coach of Citiboi FC, Gomo Onduku, said their exposure in the Nationwide League One was what gave them the edge over their opponents, describing the Movers FC as a good side.

The former Bayelsa United forward appreciated the Prosperity administration for giving the youths in the state the platform to showcase their talents, maintaining that the competition has brought out more hidden talents in the state.

Despite the defeat, Movers FC coach, Sunday Mackay believes that his team was the better side. He urged Citiboi FC to prepare themselves if they will meet again in the Round of 32 of the tournament, describing his team’s performance as brilliant.

Champions Citiboi FC smiled home with the sum of one million Naira (#1,000,000) while second placed Movers FC received five hundred thousand Naira (#500,000).

Citiboi FC becomes the latest team to join Agbere FC, Adaka FC, Crusaders FC and Nembe City as LGA champions of the ongoing Prosperity Cup tournament.
