Prosperity Cup To Produce More Future Stars

0

Bayelsa is set to have more products of the Governor’s Football Tournament ply their trade with Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) clubs and even outside the shores of the country.

This followed a disclosure by the lead scout of an international scouting programme which got underway in Yenagoa, the Bayelsa State capital on Wednesday, December 10, 2025.

The international scouting programme for youths in the state, is put together by the organizers of the Bayelsa State Governor’s Football Tournament, tagged the Prosperity Cup, in collaboration with the State Ministry of Sports Development as well as the Football Association.

Speaking to journalists after day one of the programme, the lead scout of the exercise, Mr Daniel Ayeni, from the UK, said he has already identified a number of talents from the exercise.

Noting that the essence of the programme was to identify and expose raw talents, Ayeni said the exercise will provide a platform for more Bayelsans to ply their trade in Europe in the immediate foreseeable future.

‎The obviously elated scout expressed confidence in the talents he has spotted so far from the programme, which brought together four grassroots clubs in the state namely, FC Silina, Citiboi FC, Bayelsa United Feeders and Bayelsa Starlets.

‎Also throwing more light on the scouting programme, the Secretary of the Bayelsa State Football Association, Mr. Diseye Nwankwe, said the football body, is working hands in gloves with organisers of the Prosperity Cup to see that home grown talents are nurtured and exported to Europe for greener pastures.

‎Nwankwe, who identified grassroots football as the bedrock of any nation’s football development, said apart from nurturing talents, that they are working in synergy with the Nigeria Football Federation, NFF to see that Bayelsa grassroots football coaches are properly certified with the appropriate certificates to enable them compete favourably with their peers elsewhere.

‎In his contribution, Coach Kenneth Opukeme of Advanced Dreams FA, who is also participating in the exercise, noted that the scouting programme along side the Prosperity Cup, have ‎over the years, benefitted many grassroots players in the State, adding that a handful of the players in Bayelsa would not have had the opportunity to earn a living through football if not for the painstaking efforts of the Director General of the tournament, Mr Ono Akpe and his indefatigable team.

‎He expressed confidence that scouts are going to identify good talents from the ongoing programme, stressing that he has been one of the biggest beneficiaries of the exercise especially in the discovery of Benjamin Precious who now plays with TSG Hoffenheim in Germany.

‎Opukeme, popularly known as Coach Bobo, reeled out the names of some players who are products of the Prosperity Cup and the scouting programmes to include Joel Izibevie-Nestor, Robert Mizo, Alex Oyowah and Handsome Surveyor.

The grassroots coach, who also mentioned Endurance Ebedebiri, Ayiba Edwin and John Bassey, among others, described the afore-mentioned players as eloquent testimony of the Prosperity Cup, which is unarguably the biggest grassroots football tournament in the country.

Earlier, in the first match of the day, FC Silina defeated Citiboi FC by a lone goal while Bayelsa United Feeders, were beaten four goals to one by Bayelsa Starlets in the second match.

‎Day two of the exercise will see FC Silina up against Bayelsa United Feeders at 8.00a.m. while Citiboi FC will battle Bayelsa Starlets by 10.00a.m. at the Samson Siasia Stadium, Yenagoa.

Tinubu Urges Accountability, As NDDC Boss Bags Excellence Award

0

President Bola Tinubu has called on public servants to uphold accountability in service to build trust, as he conferred the Distinguished Award for Excellence in Infrastructure Delivery and Sustainable Regional Growth on the Managing Director of the Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC, Dr Samuel Ogbuku, and other outstanding leaders.

Speaking at the third edition of the Nigeria Excellence Awards in Public Service, NEAPS, held at the State House Conference Centre, Abuja, the President warned that weak sanction systems and lax oversight often fuel cynicism about governance.

President Tinubu, represented by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, SGF, Senator George Akume, said the excellence award initiative would challenge officials to raise standards because “they know the people are monitoring them.”

He observed, “The unsystematic enforcement of law and institutional mechanisms for holding civil servants and public officials accountable will always lead to a negative impression on the citizens.

“I wish that leaders would arise and stand up to be counted among leaders who have distinguished themselves to do the right thing and leave their footprints on the sands of time.”

The President argued that public service is a trust that must be exercised with “responsibility, integrity, loyalty and efficiency,” adding that officers are expected to think creatively to solve citizens’ problems.

He observed that the excellence award organised by The Best Strategic Media in collaboration with the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation “relies on performance indices, not politics, to select honourees.”

The President said: “These awards are born out of empirical evidence of performance and not politics,” he said, commending recipients drawn from federal and state institutions, including some governors and ministers.

Speaking on the award, the NDDC Managing Director, Dr Ogbuku, remarked that it showed that Nigerians appreciated the work the NDDC was doing in Nigeria’s oil-rich region.
He thanked President Tinubu and the NEAPS award committee for the honour, reaffirming his commitment to sustaining the pace of development and transforming the Niger Delta region.

Ogbuku noted: “This award serves as a motivation to continue driving the sustainable development of our region. We will continue to serve the needs of the people and enhance the quality of life for them.”

“This honour calls for more hard work, and we will not rest on our oars until we satisfy the yearnings of the people of the Niger Delta region and take development to the nooks and crannies of the region as part of the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Tinubu’s administration.”

In a congratulatory message, the Chairman of the NDDC Governing Board, Mr. Chiedu Ebie, described the award conferred on Ogbuku as a testament to the innovations and progress he brought into the management of the Commission.

He stated that Ogbuku was rightly chosen for the prestigious award in recognition of his outstanding contributions to nation-building, dedication to fostering progress and unrelenting pursuit of excellence.

Ebie noted: “The activities of the current Board and Management of the NDDC now resonate with the people of the Niger Delta region and beyond.”

The Chairman of the NEAPS Advisory Committee and a retired Justice of the Supreme Court of Nigeria, Justice Mary Odili, observed that service excellence must never be taken for granted, stating: “Excellence in public service is a value we must continue to uphold.”
The NEAPS 2025 awards were presented to 44 distinguished Nigerians, in categories that include excellence in infrastructure service delivery, urban renewal, financial innovation, digital innovation, outstanding reform initiative, security management, transparency and open governance.

Poor Infrastructure Affecting Reading Culture in Nigeria — Ex-Police Commissioner

0

A former Commissioner of Police in FCT, CP Emmanuel Ojukwu (Rtd) has said the dwindling reading culture in the country is partly linked to deficit in infrastructure across board.

According to Ojukwu, also a former spokesperson of the Nigeria Police Force, knowledge development can only thrive when basic infrastructure are available and accessible to the citizens, calling for more investment in effective transportation system, steady power, construction and equipping of libraries across the country.

He spoke on Friday in Abuja at the official launch of two books, “Knocking Out” and “Varieties of Life” written by a lawyer, Barr. Charles Iwuchukwu.

The former police image maker underlined that reading exposes one to new knowledge and ideas, preparing them to contribute more impactfully towards solving societal problems.

“Elsewhere in the world, a man waiting at the bus stop or already travelling by bus is reading a book, when people are waiting for their flight or in the flight, they read.

“Knowledge is in books and the more you read, the more you know. Ideas rule the world. So one way we can encourage people to read in Nigeria is by improving our infrastructure, including transportation by making it more conducive. You can’t read a book when there are seven of you in a car meant for three, you can’t read a book on a motorcycle. You also need stable electricity to read”, he stated.

He also urged that the nation should be more knowledge-driven where leadership recruitment are carried out on the basis of ideas people have and not their ethnic or religious alignment. “We must grow this country on ideas. If you do that, people will be forced to read”, Ojukwu noted.

In his remarks, the author Barr. Iwuchukwu said he was inspired to write the books in order to help individuals passing through various life challenges to achieve victory.

Barr. Iwuchukwu a member of the Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA) FCT Chapter highlighted that inability to discover purpose is directly linked to why challenges of life have seem endless to a lot of people.

“If you discover purpose, irrespective of where you find yourself, you will succeed. Whether a tailor, carpenter or whatever profession you belong to, God has deposited something in you, so you must discover His purpose for you”, he stated.

The four chapter “Knocking Out” highlights the need to imbibe Faith, Ability, Steadfastness and effective utilisation of Time which the author named FAST. He urged individuals passing through difficult times to deploy these tools which be said will assist them to knock out negativity with positivity.

The “Varieties of Life” he further noted lays emphasis on the multiple choices available for people to choose, encouraging young Nigerians to make right choices for greater outcome in their future endeavours.

Also speaking, the Zonal Pastor RCCG – Rose of Sharon Abuja, Akintunde Babadiya commended the author for the arduous task of embarking on a long period of research that culminated into the literary pieces.

While urging Nigerians to imbibe the culture of developing their knowledge through reading, he encouraged every individual passing through one challenge or the other to act FAST, as the author highlighted in his “Knocking Out” and witness a total turnaround.

Ismaeel Ahmed: Five Months of Transformative Milestone at PCNGi

0

By Obinna Amaechi

The 2023 necessary and long-overdue removal of subsidy on petroleum products came with some economic shocks which affected a vast majority of Nigerians, necessitating in drastic actions by President Bola Tinubu to further strengthen his Renewed Hope mantra, designed to bring a new wave of relief to our people whose thirst and hunger for good governance has never been higher.

As a pragmatic leader, with reputation for driving innovative solutions to improve governance, he quickly thought it necessary to create a window of opportunity to ensure that the economic discomfort associated with subsidy removal is largely decimated through affordable, clean and accessible energy means. This led to the creation of Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative (PCNGi).

Widely acknowledged for his eye in identifying talents, President Tinubu rightly named Barr. Ismaeel Ahmed, a loud voice in the advocacy for good governance in the country, who had previously served in former President Muhammadu Buhari’s cabinet as Senior Special Assistant on National Social Investment Programme between 2018 and 2022.

His appointment late June 2025 as a key member in the Renewed Hope team came with simple and clear mandate — to oversee the operations of this vital component of the Tinubu administration’s palliative intervention programme. He understands that lower transport/fuel costs and access to cleaner fuel alternatives is important for every Nigerian as it will help stabilize the economy.

Apart from improved affordability of transport, Barr. Ahmed is also not ignorant of the fact that this sub-sector of the economy has potentials to generate much desired job opportunities, in terms of training technicians and mechanics in the value chain, boosting local manufacturing/assembly, saving foreign-exchange through reduced fuel import.

As a dexterous administrator with deep knowledge of how to map out policies that directly touch the lives of our people, having managed the social investment project of the previous administration, Barr. Ahmed hit the ground running in tapping into the rich domestic gas resources to bring relief to households, create wealth and support in the campaign for a healthier environment through less emission.

Upon assumption of office, he introduced three key pillars guiding the rollout of the Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative (PCNGi) which he called the three A’s – acceptability, accessibility and affordability. The acceptability pillar is anchored on deliberate efforts to ensure that trust is built among Nigerians on the safety and efficiency of CNG, eliminating doubts in the minds of the end users on how environmentally friendly it could be as an alternate to fuel. The second is accessibility. His intention here is to expand the availability of CNG refuelling stations and conversion infrastructure across the country, in order to meet the one million target of vehicles converted or CNG-enabled before the end of 2027. Finally, affordability. The helmsman has repeatedly echoed that under his watch, CNG must remain affordable and significantly cheaper than petrol and diesel.

Also, the visionary leadership of the PCNGi is offering a robust support for states to onboard new CNG buses as part of their Intrastate Mass Transit network. This it does through wholesale conversion, retrofitting and guidance to make new purchases. It is also overseeing the deployment of CNG buses through existing Private Mass Transit operators, including new financing programmes for operators through an innovative asset finance programmes. In line with President Tinubu’s vision, PCNGi is also attracting investors and partners with mouth-watering incentives in CNG processing, distribution and utilisation. Its training and technology transfer to support the After-Sales Services and maintenance sub-industry has been very impactful with regards to youth empowerment as thousands of direct and indirect jobs have been created. At the moment, an expanded free training is being considered for members of the Association of Nigerian Artisans and Technicians in automobile sector.

Transport unions across the country making use of buses and tricycles (keke) have also benefitted from millions of Naira worth of CNG kits at no cost, a development that has led to significant reduction in transportation costs and subsequently lowered the prices of foodstuffs across the country. This is what PCNGi under Barr. Ahmed represents.

Also, the investment flow coming into the Nigeria’s CNG value chain has been unprecedented. This is a product of confidence the leadership has driven in a short while. As at October 2025, over $1 billion in private sector investments has been attracted into the system.

In a bid to ensure CNG availability to the public, hundreds of stations are being rolled out nationwide with the support of various partners, while at least 255 new conversion centres and 53 daughter stations are now in full operational condition.

The last five months of a refined, soft-spoken and well-travelled gentleman on the saddle has seen a total turnaround in the PCNGi, leaving the doubting Thomases dumbfounded. It speaks to the massive achievements that will be recorded in the nearest future, in the quest to bring to our doorsteps affordable and efficient energy that will not only remain pocket-friendly, but bring prosperity to our teeming youths. That is the result of putting a square peg in a square hole. Bravo Barr. Ismaeel Ahmed!

Aigbogun, represented by the Editor of BusinessDay, Mr. Lolade Akinmurele, said that public service must be more than doing a job efficiently and honestly. “It must be a complete dedication to the people and to the nation.”

” There is no doubt that this year’s Public Service lecture and award, with the theme: Shaping Nigeria’s Economic Future: Navigating Challenges, Unlocking Opportunities”, is very apt, given the current critical challenges the country faces.
