New Jersey gang member is sentenced to life in prison for killing Nigerian man who was urinating in his street

A New Jersey gangbanger has been sentenced to life in prison for shooting dead a Nigerian man who he saw urinating in his street.

Bloods member Christopher Poole “executed” photographer Rasheed “O.J.” Olabode, 27, by shooting him in the heart as he begged for mercy.

Christopher had seen Olabode easing himself behind a car in Newark in April 2018 so he confronted him.

Surveillance video showed Olabode begging to be spared, but Poole “executed” him anyway, prosecutors said.

“The only mistake that appears the victim made was going to relieve himself in front of the wrong person,” prosecutor Jason Goldberg told Superior Court of Essex County, NJ.com said.

“And that simple, simple act — something that every single person does, every single day — was enough in the eyes of Mr. Poole to execute a man, shoot him in the heart as he prayed and tried talking his way out of it.”

Poole — who has a tattoo on his throat of a hand giving the middle finger — has a lengthy rap sheet starting from when he was just 15, the site says.

Superior Court Judge Ronald Wigler noted his “utter lack of remorse” for the execution in front of two of the victim’s friends.

Wigler, who has served as a Superior Court judge for a decade, said: “This was certainly one of the most — if not the most — senseless murder cases that I have presided over and been involved with.”

On Tuesday, February 4, Poole was sentenced to life in prison for first-degree murder. He was also sentenced to 10 years in prison for one weapons offence that will run concurrently.

He must serve at least 63 years before he is eligible for parole under the state’s No Early Release Act.

One of Poole’s two sisters cried and fled the court when he was sentenced.

“I know his heart. I know that this isn’t the person that he wanted to become,” she told NJ.com.

Olabode was originally from Nigeria. His family could not afford to make it to New Jersey for the sentencing, the court heard.

No going back on okada, keke ban ― Sanwo-Olu

0

The Lagos State Government says it will not reverse the ongoing enforcement of its Transport Sector Reform Law of 2018, which restricts the operations of commercial motorcycles, popularly known as Okada and tricycles, popularly known as Keke NAPEP in 15 local councils across the state.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu said this on Tuesday while speaking at the official launch of commercial operations in water transportation by Lagos Ferry Services (LAGFERRY) at an event held at Badore Ferry Terminal in Ajah.

The governor said the state government would not give in to the “blackmail and uninformed criticism” of its decision to restrict tricycles and motorcycles on the highways, saying the enforcement became necessary in the face of growing threats to the security of lives of residents.

According to him, the scary figures of accidents resulting from Okada riders’ recklessness and the disobedience to traffic laws necessitated the enforcement of the laws.

Although the governor admitted that the decision was a tough one, he maintained that his government would not compromise on the issue of security and safety of residents. “I agree it’s a tough decision we made regarding the restriction of Okada and Keke in some parts of Lagos. But I want to say some facts, which people can debate.

The restriction that we have done is primarily based on security and safety of lives of residents. We took the decision based on the level of danger we have seen to have happened to our people,” he said. “As a responsible government, we will not fold our arms and allow Okada riders put our lives in danger.

One life is more important to us than all the economic benefits to be made if we allowed them to continue. We understand that investment too can be critical, but keeping people alive and safe is more germane.” Speaking further, the governor sympathized with commuters affected by the Okada restriction and announced that the government would be deploying over 500 buses to the routes listed in the restriction directive as alternatives to ease movement.

He added that the launching of commercial operations on waterways by LAGFERRY was another programme introduced by the government to address congestion on the highways.

There was tragedy in Lagos on Tuesday after a 23-year old man, Michael Okibe attacked his parents; stabbed father, Barrister Clement Okibe and his mother, Toyin and they bled to death.

P.M.EXPRESS reports that the incident happened at Alhaji Afeez Gbadamosi Street, Ejigbo area of Lagos, where they reside.

Police operatives from the Ejigbo Division have retrieved the corpses and deposited at Isolo General Hospital mortuary for autopsy report.
The Late Mrs. Toyin was one of the matrons at Isolo General Hospital, was married to Barrister Okibe, had three children and the suspect, Michael, was the first child.

Michael did not spare his younger sister, identified as Mary, who he also stabbed during the attack and she is said to be lying critically ill at an undisclosed hospital.

Many wondered what could have led Michael, who is now on the run, to murder his parents and attempting to kill his younger sister, Mary.

According to residents, Michael had attended three private universities with nothing to show. He was expelled and was doing nothing but only engaging in drugs.

It was gathered that the parents had done so many things to engage him to be useful to no avail before he eventually attacked and murdered them in cold blood.

When P.M.EXPRESS correspondent visited the residence where the incident happened, Police operatives from Ejigbo Division led by the Divisional Police Officer, CSP Olabisi Okuwobi, were there making arrangements to retrieve the corpses to be deposited at the mortuary. The house was sealed off pending when the Police will conclude their investigations.

Meanwhile the Police have started manhunt for Michael over the murder of his parents. According to the residents, after he had killed them he escaped wearing a boxer pant to an unknown place.

The residents, who troop to the scene, expressed shock over what happened. They described the late couple as humble and easy going persons who were at peace with their neighbours. They noted that the suspect, Michael, had been a thorn in the flesh of the parents until he murdered them. The Late Barrister Okibe hails from Edo State.

[Judgment] Industrial Court orders reinstatement of UNIUYO lecturer Dr. Inih Ebong

0

The Presiding Judge of the National Industrial Court of Nigeria, Uyo Judicial Division, His Lordship, Hon. Justice Mahmood Namtari has ordered University of Uyo to forthwith withdraw the suspension and termination letters issued to the Dr. Inih Ebong and to reinstate him back to his duty post with payment of all salaries, allowances and non-pecuniary entitlements accruing to him since 1st August 2001 when his salary was stopped and from 28th March 2002 when his appointment was wrongfully and unlawfully terminated and the sum of Ten Million Naira as aggravated and exemplary damages within 30 days.

The Court held that the decision of the governing council of the institution was done in flagrance with the rules of natural justice.

The Claimant as a Senior Lecturer alleged that he timeously applied for his annual leave and was approved by the registrar and secretary to council on June 22, 2001. That before resumption, he wrote to the Defendants to protest the stoppage of his salary.

That the Defendants accused him of abandonment of duty and threatening to take severe disciplinary action against him to which the Claimant promptly responded by explaining the circumstances that led to his going on the annual leave.

Thereafter, the Defendants Panel absolved him of wrongdoing on the issue and recommended the reversal of the directive stopping his salary. But the Defendants refused to implement the recommendation and suspended him indefinitely for instituting the suit against them without their consent or resigning.

To the Claimant, the stoppage of salary, suspension and eventual termination of appointment, did not comply strictly with the terms and conditions of services.

The defendants submitted that Report of all the panels set up to investigate the Claimant’s acts of misconduct particularly the one he walked out on and subsequently the Senior Staff Disciplinary Committee which he shunned their subsequent meetings, that the Governing Council in its meeting held and decided that the Services of the Claimant was no longer required by the Defendants. Hence the termination of the Claimant’s appointment on 28th March 2002.

The Defendants argued that the suit which the court inherited was not commenced and was neither signed by the Claimant or any Legal Practitioner thereby robbing the court the jurisdiction to entertain it and further that the claimant having waited 14 years before approaching the Court instead of three months period prescribed by the Public Officers Protection Act the Claimant has lost his right of action if any urged the court to dismiss the case.

In reply, Claimant submitted that the Writ of Summons issued earlier was validly issued and further that a suit that was filed within time and later struck out and re-filed is not caught up by the Public Officers Protection Act, submitted that the composition of the Senior Staff Disciplinary Committee is unknown to the regulations of the institution, urged the court to grant all reliefs sought.

Delivering Judgement after careful evaluation of the submission of both counsel, the presiding Judge, Justice Namtari held that the suit is competent that the application of the Public Officers Protection Act on the case rooted in the contract of employment no more tenable.

“From the evidence of the Claimant, I am of the firm view that he has discharged the onus placed on him to justify the non-imposition of the penalty on him of either removal from office or forfeiture of salary for the period.

“The letter of query dated 18th September 2001 and the Panel constituted to investigate the matter on 15th October 2001 are clear after-thoughts and akin to medicine after death. I have therefore no doubt in finding and holding that the stoppage of Claimant’s salary was ultra vires, unlawful, null and void.

“The Claimant was not afforded the opportunity of being heard by the University Council before his appointments were unilaterally and prematurely terminated on 27th March 2002 upon a questionable report. The decision of the 3rd Defendant – Governing Council fell short of the standard of fair hearing and is hereby declared null and void and no effect whatsoever.” Justice Namtari ruled.
