Taribo: Super Eagles Players Slept With Women At France ’98

0

Former Nigeria defender Taribo West has sensationally disclosed that some Super Eagles players sneaked ‘African women’ into their hotel rooms a night before their disastrous round of 16 outing against Denmark at the 1998 World Cup in France.

The Nigerians, overwhelming favourites against the Danish opponents, put up a lacklustre performance and were humiliated 4-1 by the Europeans in a one-sided encounter in front of 77,000 fans at Stade de France, Saint-Denis.

Taribo said some players brought women into the rooms the night the June 28, 1998 clash, which he claimed led to fatigue on match day.

“I read reports about Eagles visiting nightclubs and driving limousines during the World Cup in France, honestly, I don’t know about that,” Taribo told The PUNCH.

“But what I know is that some players sneaked women into camp, I saw that. The women were Africans who came to watch the tournament and fell in love with our team, because of the way we played in the group stage. So, it was easy for these players to woo them to their rooms.

“That is why on match day, you could see a lot of the players didn’t have the strength to curtail the Danish players. They were tired after overworking themselves the night before with the women. I was yelling at them on the pitch, I was very angry with them.

“They did all these because they thought we were going to beat Denmark

In a statement by his spokesman Olisa Ifeajika, the governor disclosed that the case, which was the second, after the first confirmed on Tuesday, was awaiting the outcome of the test conducted on it when the patient passed away.

He stated that the government is “fast-tracking our contact-tracing to ensure that all those that came in contact with the deceased patient are properly isolated and tested immediately.”

The governor also asked health workers “to protect citizens and residents of our state, families and friends of individuals that are exhibiting the primary symptoms of COVID-19, do not keep it from the authorities.”

I never knew Nigeria’s healthcare infrastructure was in such bad state – SGF

0

The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha, has decried the poor state of Nigeria’s healthcare infrastructure.

Mr Mustapha, who is also the chairman of the Presidential Taskforce (PTF) on COVID-19, said he realised how bad it was, after he was appointed to head the team. He made this known during a meeting with the leadership of the national assembly on Thursday.

“I can tell you for sure, I never knew that our entire healthcare infrastructure was in the state in which it is. Until I was appointed to do this work,” he said.

While he noted that the pandemic has provided the opportunity to examine the state of the national health care systems which is in dire need of reforms and funding, he said the weaknesses in Nigeria’s health systems became more glaring given the way more established health systems in Europe and America collapsed under pressure.

He, however, assured that there are plans to lay a legacy foundation for the immediate, medium and long-term development of the health system in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic across the country.

To this end, he said, the taskforce has proposed to utilise the resources being mobilised in a “strategic manner.” This includes:

Direct development and delivery of critical infrastructure to states by donors; direct procurement and delivery of personal protective equipment and other critical equipment by donors; deployment of rapid response teams to states for capacity building and support; and expansion of the testing capacity in the country.

Mr Mustapha added that for transparency and accountability, the taskforce will not be directly involved in the collection and disbursement of the cash donations for COVID-19.

“The Accountant General of the Federation has already published the account details for collection through some commercial banks and also provided the modalities for its utilisation. All the main COVID-19 accounts shall be domiciled in the Central Bank of Nigeria.

“However, all non-cash donations shall be duly received by the PTF, acknowledged, documented and appropriately deployed,” he said.

He further stated that the officials carrying out the exercise can be identified with the COVID-19 Outbreak Response tags and letter from the Local Government.

He said, ”In the coming days, some of our health workers will be moving around in pairs to administer an electronic questionnaire at homes and healthcare facilities to make inquiries about symptoms of cough, cold and fever.

”This is in a bid to intensify our search for possible cases of COVID-19 in different communities across the State.

”I implore you to give them your maximum support by providing accurate information that would help in containing this pandemic quickly.”

Air operators give Wike 24 hours to free arrested pilots, or else…

0

Governor Nyesome wike was on Wednesday given 24 hours by Air Operators of Nigeria (AON) to release pilots of Caverton Helicopters arrested in Rivers for allegedly violating the state’s lockdown order.

AON vowed that it would stop all flights operations to Rivers State for three months should Wike not heed to its demand.

Wike had ordered the arrest of the pilots on the claims that they violated RIvers government’s no movement order to curtail the spread of COVID-19 in the state.

But in a statement by its chairman, Captain Nogie Meggison AON said: “The Airline Operators of Nigeria (AON) hereby calls for the immediate release of two (2) Pilots of Caverton Helicopters that were recently arrested and taken into custody in handcuffs by the Rivers State Government for allegedly flouting the COVID19 Lockdown Order in the State.

“The Airline Operators Nigeria condemns the move in the strongest term and considers it very unlawful in the face of the fact that the airline had secured all necessary approvals from the Ministry of Aviation and the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) for the flight in line with the protocols for exemption of Essential flights as issued by the NCAA.

“The AON also frowns at the crude action because the pilots were only doing their lawful duties which were also in line with President Muhammed Buhari’s Exemption Order of the Oil and Gas sector during the shutdown exercise.

“Aviation is under the Exclusivity List of the Federal Government and the Port Harcourt NAF Base is a Federal Government entity outside the jurisdiction of the Rivers State Government.

“The Airline Operators of Nigeria hereby demands the immediate and unconditional release of the two pilots with all purported charges dropped so that they can go back to their families for the Easter holidays and return to their jobs.

“However, should the Rivers State Government fail to release the pilots within 24 hours, Airlines in the country will be forced to boycott all scheduled and unscheduled commercial and private flight operations, including oil and gas offshore flight services, into Port Harcourt for a period of three (3) months.

“We, therefore, hope our appeal for the immediate release of the pilots within 24 hours will be heeded by Rivers State Government otherwise Airlines in the country will have no other option than to completely boycott all operations into Port Harcourt,” said AON Chairman, Capt. Nogie Meggison.”

NMA, NARD lack Power of Compulsory Deductions —Industrial Court rules

0

The Presiding Judge, National Industrial Court, Enugu Judicial Division, His Lordship, Hon. Justice Olukayode Arowosegbe has declared that Dr. Olusegun Olaopa a dental resident and all dental residents are entitled to the use of the title ‘Dr.’ and eminently qualified to belong to the National Association of Resident Doctors of Nigeria.

However, the Court held that no specific provisions of the Medical and Dental Practitioners Act give the NMA the right to the compulsory deduction from the source, that NMA and its branches lack the powers of compulsory deductions of any dues from the salary sources of members.

From facts, the learned counsel to the claimant Dr. Awkadigwe Ikenna had submitted that it was illegal for a mere branch to collect another round of dues after members had paid their annual dues that no prior consent of the members was obtained to deduct from the source.

The learned counsel argued that, the 1st defendant- Dr. Olusegun Olaopa a dental resident, could not lawfully take up the title ‘doctor’ without becoming an impostor, contrary to the Medical and Dental Practitioners Act, that only medical practitioners and not dental surgeons could use the title doctor.

The learned counsel argued that it was impersonative for Dr. Olusegun, a dental surgeon, to be a member of NARD and more so, its president. The learned counsel argued that to obviate this misnomer, the name of the association must be changed from NARD to National Association of Resident Doctors and Dentists of Nigeria NARDD urged the Court annul the association and to hold that, its membership could not be made compulsory for all resident doctors by striking down the byelaw as being unconstitutional.

The 2nd defendant Dr. Ike Okwesili for and on behalf of himself and Nigerian Medical Association Enugu State Branch filed preliminary objection that claimant lacked locus to institute the action while the 3rd defendant’s objected that the suit was improperly constituted and, the proper parties were not before the Court that the reliefs sought have grave impacts on the NMA, yet the claimant failed to sue the NMA.

The learned counsel to the Dr. Olusegun argued that deduction of dues at source is with the consent of members and approved by the Hospital Management Boards that the custom of deduction of subscription from source had been in place since 1978.

On whether dentists are eligible to the use of ‘Dr.’, the learned counsel submitted that the medical profession includes surgeons, dentists, paediatricians, obstetricians and gynaecologists who are all and collectively referred to as doctors and that, they were all inducted into the profession together and all took the Hippocratic Oath and conferred with the title ‘Dr.’.

Delivering judgment, the presiding Judge, Justice Arowosegbe held that NMA was both a necessary and proper party in the suit and that the omission of the NMA in the suit is fatal to the action.

“The argument that the proper order to make if the Court comes to the conclusion that the proper party was not before the Court is to order joinder and not strike out, is very incorrect because, it failed to take cognisance of the fact that, the case has been heard on the merit and reserved for judgment. This could only be right when NPO is heard in limine and ruling delivered in limine. Assuming my decision above in is right, I strike out this case.

“Nevertheless, assuming my decision above is not in tune with the superior wisdom of Court of Appeal, I shall proceed to examine the other issues in the matter for the sake of completeness to enable the Court of Appeal to have my decisions on all issues thus, obviating the necessity of ordering retrial; and thus, saving precious judicial time.

“The defendants, in this case, cannot, therefore, rely on the Medical Residency Training Act to justify the invasion of the employment rights of citizens by compulsorily deducting from sources of their salaries.

“If ever, deduction from a source must be made, it must be with the written consent of the residents and not the approval of the Hospital Management Boards, who are not the owners of the salaries. It is unheard of that a Board, not being the owner of the salaries, would approve deductions from source from the salaries of employees. It is only registration as trade union that can confer this right on any union or speciously very clear written consent of the employee.

“I also wish to add that, a consideration of the purposes of Medical Residency Training Act and the Medical and Dental Practitioners Act show that both medical practitioners and dental surgeons or practitioners are always treated at par.” Justice Arowosegbe Ruled

COVID-19: FG gives reasons for not conducting mass test on Nigerians

0

The Federal Government has said that conducting mass testing for Coronavirus in Nigeria would not be possible for now given that the nation has over 200 million population.

This was made known by the Minister of Health, Osagie Ehanire, during a news briefing after the arrival of the Chinese experts in Abuja, on Wednesday.

Ehanire said that the government was more focused on conducting tests for those who had been abroad or those who may have come in contact with any positive case.

He said, “We have 200 million citizens and mass testing is not something that I think is very feasible now, we are doing targeted testing.

“We are targeting those who are likely to have been affected, so we are looking at areas and persons who meet certain criteria that we set.

“Criteria of having been abroad, having been in contact with persons who have been abroad or having been in a cluster of places where we have a lot of positives.

“Even though it is going into secondary we are doing what is called smart testing in order to identify the cases that are giving us concern.”

According to him, researches were ongoing in many countries and the government was relying on science and advice from WHO to overcome the pandemic, NAN reports.
