INEC Confirms start of campaigns in Edo

0

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) says it has lifted the ban on campaigns by political parties ahead of the September 19 governorship election in Edo State.

Mr Timidi Wariowei, the INEC Head of Voter Education in Edo, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Benin that the campaigns officially commenced on June 21.

He said “The reason we distributed materials early is that the office we are occupying now has a small storage capacity. The storage facility cannot accommodate all the materials, so as the materials come we dispatch to our local government offices.

“The non-sensitive materials we have received so far are not complete so as they come in batches we distribute because of lack of space to keep them,” he said.

According to Wariowei, the total registered voters as at 2019 is 2,210,534, while uncollected PVCs stands at 483,868.

INEC has cleared and displayed list of candidates of 14 registered political parties, including the All Progressives Party and Peoples Democratic Party, being the major contenders, ahead of the polls.

JUST IN: DSS Reportedly Arrests EFCC Boss, Ibrahim Magu

0

Acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Ibrahim Magu, has been reportedly arrested by officers of the police force, led by an Assistant Inspector General of police and some DSS officers.

He was arrested over allegations that he owns four properties and that he was allegedly transferring funds abroad through a third party.

The DSS in a 2016 report revealed that accused of living in a N40m mansion paid for by one Umar Mohammed, a retired air commodore who is allegedly involved in shady deals.

“In December 2010, the Police Service Commission (PSC) found Magu guilty of action prejudicial to state security – withholding of EFCC files, sabotage, unauthorised removal of EFCC files and acts unbecoming of a police officer, and awarded him severe reprimand as punishment.

“Magu is currently occupying a residence rented for N40m at N20m per annum. This accommodation was not paid [for] from the commission’s finances, but by one Umar Mohammed, air commodore retired, a questionable businessman who has subsequently been arrested by the secret service.

“For the furnishing of the residence, Magu enlisted the Federal Capital Development Authority to award a contract to Africa Energy, a company owned by the same Mohammed, to furnish the residence at the cost of N43m.

“Investigations show that the acting EFCC chairman regularly embarked on official and private trips through a private jet owned by Mohammed.

“In one of such trips, Magu flew to Maiduguri alongside Mohammed with a bank MD who was being investigated by the EFCC over complicity in funds allegedly stolen by the immediate past petroleum minister, Diezani Alison-Madueke.

“Furthermore, the EFCC boss has so far maintained a high-profile lifestyle. This is exemplified by his preference for first-class air travels. On 24 June, 2016, he flew Emirate airlines first-class to Saudi Arabia to perform lesser hajj at the cost of N2.9m. This is in spite of Mr President’s directive to all public servants to fly economy class.

“Magu has fostered a beneficial relationship with Mohammed who by his confession approaches clients for possible exploitation, favours and associated returns,” the DSS report said.

Magu is yet to be confirmed as the substantive chairman of the EFCC despite occupying the position in acting capacity for many years.

Nine aspirants including Ajayi were recently screened by the Yakubu Dogara-led PDP Screening Committee for the party’s primary slated for 22nd and 23rd of July, 2020.

The deputy governor has been embroiled in a number of faceoffs with the state governor who seeks reelection on the platform of the APC.

0

Nigeria’s COVID-19 cases continued to rise as the country on Sunday reported 544 fresh infections.

This is according to a tweet by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) which said the new figure brings the West African nation’s total confirmed cases to 28,711.

The agency said the new COVID-19 cases were reported in 18 states in the country and the Federal Capital with Lagos State having the highest number of infections for Sunday –  199.

Going Global

The novel coronavirus has killed at least 531,789 people since the outbreak emerged in China last December, according to a tally from official sources compiled by AFP at 1900 GMT on Sunday.

At least 11,343,890 cases of coronavirus have been registered in 196 countries and territories. Of these, at least 5,906,500 are now considered recovered.

The tallies, using data collected by AFP from national authorities and information from the World Health Organization (WHO), probably reflect only a fraction of the actual number of infections.

Many countries are testing only symptomatic or the most serious cases.

Since 1900 GMT on Saturday, 4,205 new deaths and 182,459 new cases were recorded worldwide. The countries with the most new deaths were Brazil with 1,091 new deaths, followed by India with 613, and Mexico with 523.

The United States is the worst-hit country with 129,718 deaths from 2,852,807 cases. At least 894,325 people have been declared recovered.

Kanye West Announces He’s Running For President

0

Kanye West, the entertainment mogul who urges listeners in one song to “reach for the stars, so if you fall, you land on a cloud,” claimed Saturday he is challenging Donald Trump for the US presidency in 2020.

“We must now realize the promise of America by trusting God, unifying our vision and building our future. I am running for president of the United States! #2020VISION,” the born-again billionaire rapper tweeted as Americans marked Independence Day.

West offered no further details on his supposed campaign, four months before the November election, and it is unclear if he has officially registered to run for office.

Hundreds of thousands of Twitter users reacted to the star’s announcement and “Kanye” shot to become the top trending term on the platform, although many questioned whether the volatile rapper would go through with his plan and others claimed it was a publicity stunt.

His wife, reality star Kim Kardashian, replied with a US flag emoji, while Tesla CEO Elon Musk wrote: “You have my full support!”

The 43-year-old has mentioned running for president several times and he said last year he would run for president in 2024.

West long ago broke ranks with most of the left-leaning entertainment industry to loudly voice his support for Trump.

In 2018, they met in the Oval Office — a surreal tete-a-tete that included a hug from the rapper as well as an on-camera rant featuring an expletive not often repeated for the White House press corps.

That year, West also delivered a lengthy soliloquy to a president who many deem racist, telling him he loved him — to the dismay of many Democrats and fellow artists.

But in 2019, during an interview with Zane Lowe of Apple Music’s Beats 1 show, he said his support for Trump had been a way to razz Democrats — and announced his own presidential ambitions.

“There will be a time when I will be the president of the US, and I will remember… any founder that didn’t have the capacity to understand culturally what we were doing.”

It was unclear to whom the artist was referring.

The announcement came days after West, who has taken a very public turn towards Christianity in recent years, released a new song, “Wash Us In the Blood,” along with an accompanying video including imagery from recent anti-racism protests.

West has also opened up about his mental health, particularly his struggle with bipolar disorder, telling talk show host David Letterman he feels like he has “a sprained brain, like having a sprained ankle.”

Since 2018, Kardashian has formed her own contacts with the White House as she champions criminal justice reform: she has successfully lobbied Trump to pardon a sexagenarian woman for a non-violent drug offence.

For weeks now Trump, criticized for his response both to the coronavirus pandemic and to anti-racism protests, has been lagging in the polls behind his Democratic rival, Joe Biden.

There was no immediate response to West’s announcement from either candidate Saturday.

Croatia Votes For New Government As COVID-19 Woes Loom

0

The pandemic has put Croatia’s tourism-dependent economy on course for a contraction of nearly 10 percent — its steepest decline in decades — even as the country’s own health situation has remained stable.

The ruling conservative HDZ party, which has led the Adriatic country for most of its independence, has been touting its relative success in containing the country’s virus outbreak thus far, with an official tally of roughly 110 deaths and 3,000 infections.

But a fresh rise of cases in recent weeks, with dozens recorded daily, has renewed fears over the health situation and given the opposition fresh ammunition.

“Whoever wins will face major economic problems to deal with in autumn. It won’t be easy,” said Igor Ivic, a 49-year-old economist among the first crowd of voters to cast ballots in Zagreb.

Polls put Croatia’s two main camps — Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic’s HDZ and the left-leaning ‘Restart’ coalition led by the Social Democrats (SDP) — in a close contest.

With neither expected to carve out an absolute majority in the 151-member house, tricky coalition talks are expected to follow the vote.

That leaves the new populist ‘Homeland Movement’ of folk singer-turned-politician Miroslav Skoro, polling in third, a potential kingmaker.

– ‘New start’ –

With the European Union member facing a fresh uptick infections, voters were advised to wear masks and bring their own pens to polling stations, which opened at 7:00 am (0500 GMT).

Officials also paid home visits to collect the ballots of 500 people — some 10 percent of those in self-isolation — who requested to vote, while others infected with the virus can do so through a proxy.

SDP leader and prime minister candidate Davor Bernardic has accused the government of “consciously pushing Croatia into a risk” by deciding to go ahead with the election in the middle of the pandemic.

He and other rivals also highlight HDZ’s history of graft, which has been brought back to the fore with a recent scandal involving a top official.

“We have offered a clear alternative, clear changes for Croatia’s new start,” 40-year-old Bernardic said after casting his vote in the capital.

Plenkovic, meanwhile, is hoping the uncertainty of the health crisis will inspire voters to stick with HDZ, in power since 2016.

Now is the time for “serious choices and not for political quackery,” said the former MEP with strong backing from Brussels, who has dismissed his rivals as ill-prepared.

“Croatia doesn’t have time for experiments like Bernardic or Skoro,” he said.

Petar Dragic, a taxi driver from Zagreb, told AFP agreed with the 50-year-old prime minister.

“I’m pragmatic, don’t care who is left or right. Only Plenkovic is capable of pulling funds from Brussels and this is what we need now,” he said.

Yet some Croatians are hungry for new faces in a country struggling with massive emigration driven by low salaries and corruption at home.

“There is not enough focus on Croatians leaving for abroad, unemployment and poor salaries of young people,” said retired teacher Branka Tekavec.

Right-wing Skoro is also trying to capitalise on fatigue with the country’s two-party dominance, arguing that only his new party “guarantees a change, while SDP and HDZ guarantee the continuity of bad governance”.

The popular musician made his big debut when he finished third in Croatia’s December presidential election, inspiring him to form a new movement.

Analysts say HDZ could ultimately accept a tie-up with the singer, despite anger over his moves to break off a segment of their traditional voting base.

SDP, on the other hand, is unlikely to consider such an alliance given 57-year-old Skoro’s nostalgia for Croatia’s pro-Nazi past and accusations of sexism.

Some 3.8 million people are eligible to vote with first official results due late Sunday.

JUST IN: Oyetola Orders Lockdown Of Four Local Government Areas From Tuesday

0

Governor Adegboyega Oyetola of the State of Osun has ordered the total lockdown of four of the local government areas of the state namely: Ilesa East, Ilesa West, Atakumosa East and Atakumosa West for seven days in the first instance.

The decision was the fallout of the meeting between the government and the stakeholders from the area.

The lockdown is expected to commence on Tuesday, July 7, and it will be for one week in the first instance. However, if the compliance level is not encouraging, the government will announce further extension.

The state also said it was closely monitoring other Local Government areas with rising numbers of those testing positive for COVID-19 and may in the days ahead lock down more areas.

However , the relaxation in other areas of the state has been extended by two weeks.

These were contained in a statement issued by the State’s Commissioner for Information and Civic Orientation, Mrs. Funke Egbemode.

She further said the decision to impose a total lockdown on the four local government areas was aimed at containing the spread of the virus in that axis of the State, noting that government had every reason to believe that it was already witnessing what looked more like a community transmission in the area and as such there was need to come up with measures to arrest the trend.

The Commissioner stressed that the lockdown would be total. Residents and citizens in that axis will not have opportunity to go to worship centres and markets during the period. They will only be allowed to shop within their neighbourhood.

Under the lockdown, there would be no vehicular movement within the affected areas. Only those on essential duties such as health, fire service, environmental officials, security personnel, power and water supply agencies, media and telecommunication officers will be allowed to move.

Mrs. Egbemode also revealed that intra-state travel to and within the affected communities and to other parts of the State is banned during the period of the lockdown, warning that violators of the lockdown order will be severely dealt with.

“As you are all aware, the Federal Government, a few days ago lifted the ban on inter-state travel in the country. We have, therefore, lifted ours too. But our relaxation guidelines still subsists except for four local government areas, namely; Ilesa West, Ilesa East, Atakumosa West and Atakumosa East Local Government areas where we have now ordered a one-week lockdown, effective Tuesday, July 7.

“For the avoidance of doubt, our curfew will still run from 9.p.m to 5.a.m daily in other parts of the State, except the locked down LGAs.

“In furtherance to the above, for the other parts of the State, the ban on political, public, religious, and any kind of gatherings under whatever guise remain in force, while worship centres must adhere strictly to government’s guidelines guiding their re-opening. Government will not hesitate to shut down any of the worship centres that violates our guidelines.

“For the four local government areas, all markets will remain shut, only neighbourhood markets and Pharmacies will be allowed to open. There must be strict adherence to stipulated physical distancing, the use of face masks, and observance of all other precautionary measures and established protocols of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC).

“To this end, we urge citizens and residents of the affected communities to take advantage of the hours between now and Monday to stock up provisions that will last them one week in the first instance.

“We have mandated and mobilised the state’s task force and security operatives to strictly enforce the measures.

“The decision to shut down a part of the state, though painful, is the only way to go if it must arrest further spread of the virus in the state,” she added.

COURT: Industrial Court Dismisses Gratuity Claim Against Atakunmosa East Local Government Area In Osun State For Lacking Merit

0

The Presiding Judge, Portharcourt Judicial division of the National Industrial Court, His Lordship, Hon. Justice Faustina Kola-Olalere has dismissed the gratuity claim filed by twelve former annulled councillors of Atakunmosa East Local Government Area for lacking in merit.

Furthermore, the Court held that Adeleke Funmilayo and Eleven others are not entitled to severance gratuity irrespective of the years they spent because their election was declared a nullity by the apex court.

From facts, the Claimants- Adeleke Funmilayo and Eleven others had averred that having served as Chairman, Vice-Chairman and Councilors in the Local Government between January 10, 2008 and December 17, 2010 that they are entitled to payment of 300% of their Annual Basic Salary.

On the other hand, the defendant- Atakunmosa East Local Government Area opined that Claimants are not entitled to the payments of severance gratuity in view of the judgment of the Court of Appeal and the judgment of the Supreme Court that nullified their election.

However, counsel to the defendant, Hassan Agbelekale Esq Ministry of Justice Osun filed a Notice of Preliminary Objection and further that claimants did not successfully completed their tenure and are not entitled to severance gratuities.

In reply, claimants’ Counsel Jola Akintola Esq submitted that claimants became entitled to the gratuities after spending more than 2 years out their 3 years tenure in office before they were sacked by the Supreme Court urged the Court to hold so.

Delivering judgment, the presiding Judge, Justice Kola-Olalere affirmed the objection, and held that provision of section 105 of the Local Government Law Cap 72, Laws of Osun State is applicable to the case.

“Therefore, considering the stage of the proceedings that this ‘Objection’ was raised by the defendant, this Court is required to resolve the substantive disputes between the parties together with the Objection as Parties have properly traversed those issues before the objection was raised.

“However, from the evidence before the Court; the claimants did not complete their tenure successfully because the Supreme Court affirmed the nullification of their elections on December 17, 2010 and declared their election Law illegal. Notwithstanding that they had served their tenure for almost 3 years; they are still not entitled to this claim. This is because their election was declared a nullity.

“Therefore, I hold that the claimants cannot claim any severance gratuity in this case. The reason being that allowing the claimants to make this claim will amount to this Court aiding them to benefit from their illegal act after it has become aware that their said act (election) was illegal and it was nullified by the Apex Court in Nigeria; this Court will not do. Consequently, this case is dismissed for lacking in merit.”

Lagos To Reopen Schools On The 3rd of August

0

The Lagos State Government, on Friday, directed that schools should reopen on Monday, August 3, for only Senior Secondary School Class 3 and Technical Schools Class 3.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu stated this at the 16th briefing on the COVID-19 response at the State House in Marina, adding that pupils in Junior Secondary School Class 3 would need to wait for “about a week or two before resumption.”

Sanwo-Olu also sustained the ban on churches and mosques, as well as on social gatherings, while clarifying that the schools’ reopening was only for day schooling as boarding activities were prohibited.

For the Primary 6 pupils, the governor noted that they would be graded by their already recorded Continuous Assessment to cross over to secondary schools.

The Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 had on Monday approved the “safe reopening of schools in the next phase of the gradual easing of lockdown” ordered to stop the spread of the infection.

The state added that it was sustaining the phase of eased restrictions for another two weeks, after which it would review and modify the guidelines.

Ortom’s Wife, Son, Aides Test Positive for Covid-19

0

The wife of the Governor of Benue State, Mrs. Eunice Ortom, her son, and some of her aides have tested positive for Covid-19.

Mrs. Ortom disclosed this in a statement she personally signed around 11:30pm on Friday.

“Few moments ago this evening, I received my result from the tests earlier carried out on me by NCDC personnel on routine screening at Government House, Makurdi which returned that I and my son, and some staff are Covid-19 positive.

“We have from this moment, gone into total isolation as required by the protocols and would immediately begin the management treatment as advised by medical experts.

“While I have taken the responsibility to personally call everyone I can recall to have had recent contact with to go for testing, I advise anyone who has had close contact with me in the last 2 weeks and the public to go for screening and testing.

“I wish to reiterate that being Covid-19 positive is not a death sentence as evident by the many recoveries recorded thus far. So there is no need to panic, but we should continue to be responsible in our actions so as to keep others safe,” she said.

The governor’s wife therefore encouraged people to take preventive measures and be safe by observing the primary protocols such as wearing of masks, constant washing of hands, maintaining social distancing and staying indoors if not necessary to go out.

The Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Terver Akase, had last Tuesday confirmed that his principal, Governor Samuel Ortom, had taken a second Covid-19 test and that the result was being awaited.

It is not immediately clear if Orton’s result had been released and what the test result read.

Since the relaxed lockdown in the state, the coronavirus infection rate has increased and there are palpable fear that if something is not done, it will go out of hand.

Only recently, the Vice-Chancellor of the Benue State University tested positive to the virus.
