[Osun @29]: Adeleke Urges the People of the State to remain hopeful, steadfast and courageous in pursuit of better living

0

The senator representing the people of Osun west in the 8th assembly, Senator Ademola Adeleke has implored the good people of Osun State not to lose faith but remain, hopeful, steadfast and courageous in the pursuit of the Osun State they deserve.

Adeleke made the call in a signed statement to mark the 29th anniversary of the creation of the state since 27th of August, 1991.

Adeleke urged citizens and residents of the state not to despair in the midst of socioeconomic and political challenges, saying such challenges should rather be the needed elixir to bring out the best in all to salvage the situation.

He urged the good people of Osun State not to lose faith, believing that there would be light at the end of the tunnel.

Adeleke decried the series of avoidable economic hardship suffered by the people caused mainly by the mismanagement of Osun state’s resources by self serving leaders of the state in the last 9years plunging the state into an unprecedented and unsustainable debt profile with littany abandoned projects to show for it.

In his statement: “We daily encounter so many challenges in our journey to pursue better living conditions and good governance. No doubt, it has been a torturous experience. But we must not give in to such challenges, we must however be emboldened and determined to strive harder till we achieve the Osun state that we all deserve, where our people prosper, where they work and live happily as envisioned by the founding fathers of our dear state.

All a committed leader who truly loves the people of the state needs to do is to creatively harness our tremendous human and material resources for the benefit of ALL citizens, and not to benefit some disconnected and exploitative “masters” who ferry our commonwealth out of Osun instead of impacting the economy of the state”, he said.

“We must all strive daily to contribute our quota to the development of Osun State where every citizen has equal rights and opportunity to pursue his or her legitimate aspirations for better living conditions unhindered.”

Senator Ademola Adeleke expressed optimism that “the future is bright because the dark days would soon be over”.

SERAP Asks Lawan, Gbajabiamila To Stop Water Resource Bill 2020 Or Be Sued

0

Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has sent an urgent appeal to the Senate President, Ahmad Lawan, and Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, urging them to “immediately drop the illegal Water Resources 2020, which requires Nigerians to obtain a permit before sinking a borehole in their homes.”

The Bill seeks to bring all water resources (surface and underground) and the banks of the water sources under the control of the Federal Government through its agencies to be established by the Bill.

Section 13 of the Bill, says, “in implementing the principles under subsection (2) of this section, the institutions established under this Act shall promote integrated water resources management and the coordinated management of land and water resources, surface water and ground water resources, river basins and adjacent marine and coastal environment and upstream and downstream interests.”

Section 2(1), states: “All surface water and ground water wherever it occurs, is a resource common to all people.’’

The Bill is primed for passage by the House on their resumption from recess next month, which is September.

Reacting to the secret plot to pass the bill, SERAP, in a tweet via its Twitter handle, @SERAPNigeria, on Friday, said “We’ll challenge this illegality in court should the bill ever be passed into law.”

The tweet reads: “We call on the leadership of @nassnigeria to immediately drop the illegal Water Resources 2020, which requires Nigerians to obtain a permit before sinking a borehole in their homes. We’ll challenge this illegality in court should the bill ever be passed into law.

“The bill also states, among others, that “the use of water shall be subject to licencing provisions”. The licence can be withdrawn on flimsy grounds.

“Rather than addressing severe water crisis and improving access of Nigerians facing daily challenges just to access safe water for drinking and hygiene, the National Assembly is pushing to take away Nigerians’ fundamental human right to clean water.

“Yet, Nigeria has ratified numerous human rights treaties that contain obligations related to water and sanitation, including the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, and the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights.

Blasphemy: I Will Not Waste Time To Sign Death Warrant — Ganduje

0

Governor Abdullahi Ganduje of Kano State, yesterday, expressed his readiness to sign the death sentence judgment on an alleged blasphemy.

22-year-old Aminu Yahaya Sharif was recently sentenced to death by a Judge of Kano Upper Shari’ah Court.

According to the Judge, Aliyu Kani, his judgment was based on Section 382 (b) of Kano Shari’ah Penal Code of 2000.

Governor Ganduje made the statement while speaking at a special meeting held at Government House, Kano.

The Governor said, “What happened is so important to the state and to the security of the state and the nation in general. What the Court did is absolutely right. And we support it completely. Such kind of irresponsible act, if not because of the state power, nobody could know what would happen in the future.

“The man, who did that, confessed to being a follower of a particular Islamic Sect. But the adherents of that Sect rejected him right away. So, we need to understand the importance of this judgment.”

He said that the state government has accepted the death sentence verdict and the rule of law surrounding the case.

Ganduje said, “I will not waste time in signing the warrant for the execution of the man, who blasphemed our Holy Prophet of Islam.”

His announcement was in the presence of the Commissioner of Police, Director State Security Service, representative of Christian Association of Nigeria, Eze Ndigbo in Kano, Igwe Boniface Ibekwe; and representatives of Nigerian Bar Association among others.

US Presidency 2020: Biden Will Demolish American Dream, Trump Warns

0

US President, Donald Trump, has warned his Democratic challenger, Joe Biden, will “demolish” the American dream if he wins the White House in November.

Speaking on the final night of the Republican convention, the president depicted his opponent as “the destroyer of American greatness”.

Trump accepted his party’s renomination from the South Lawn of the White House.

On Thursday night, the president asked voters for another four years in office, vowing to dispel the coronavirus pandemic that has ravaged the US economy and quell civil strife ignited by police killings of African Americans.

“This election will decide whether we save the American dream,” he said, “or whether we allow a socialist agenda to demolish our cherished destiny.”

He added: “Your vote will decide whether we protect law-abiding Americans, or whether we give free rein to violent anarchists, agitators and criminals who threaten our citizens.”

Trump’s reference to the sometimes violent racial justice protests that have swept the nation in recent months came as hundreds of Black Lives Matter demonstrators gathered outside the White House gates.

Some of their shouts and car horns could be heard on the South Lawn despite new fencing being erected this week along the White House perimeter to keep protesters at a distance.

The president said the Democrats at their party convention last week had disparaged America as a place of racial, social and economic injustice.

“So tonight,” he added, “I ask you a very simple question – how can the Democrat party ask to lead our country when it spends so much time tearing down our country?

“In the left’s backward view, they do not see America as the most free, just and exceptional nation on earth. Instead, they see a wicked nation that must be punished for its sins.”

In a blistering attack on his opponent’s decades-long political life, he continued: “Joe Biden spent his entire career outsourcing the dreams of American workers, offshoring their jobs, opening their borders and sending their sons and daughters to fight in endless foreign wars.”

While Mr Trump portrayed his challenger as “a Trojan horse for socialism”, Mr Biden’s lengthy record as a political moderate was a hindrance for him as he competed to capture his party’s nomination.

Mr Trump mentioned Mr Biden more than 40 times; the Democrat did not once name Mr Trump in his speech last week, though criticism of the president permeated Mr Biden’s remarks.

Some of the speakers on the night sought to humanise the president, who is sometimes accused of lacking empathy.

His daughter, Ivanka Trump, a White House adviser, said: “I’ve been with my father and seen the pain in his eyes when he receives updates on the lives that have been stolen by this [coronavirus] plague.”

Ja’Ron Smith, a White House political aide who has worked on racial disparities in the criminal justice system, said the president “really cares”.

The parents of Kayla Mueller, a US hostage of the Islamic State group who was killed in Syria, lauded Mr Trump for ordering the operation, named after their daughter, that killed IS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi last year.

“The Trump team gave us empathy we never received from the Obama administration,” said grieving father Carl Mueller.

Other speakers touted Mr Trump as a law-and-order strongman – a message hammered home during the previous three nights of the party conference.

Mr Trump’s personal attorney Rudolph Giuliani, who was mayor of New York in the 1990s, said: “These continuous riots in Democrat cities gives you a good view of the future under Biden.”

Biden – who was vice-president under Barack Obama – struck back on Twitter, posting: “When Donald Trump says tonight you won’t be safe in Joe Biden’s America, look around and ask yourself: How safe do you feel in Donald Trump’s America?”

Speaking by video link on Thursday night, Mr Biden said he was planning to hit the campaign trail again.

The Trump campaign has mocked him for running his White House bid during the pandemic mostly from the basement of his home in Wilmington, Delaware, citing coronavirus prevention measures.

Biden has a steady single-digit lead in opinion polls over Mr Trump with 68 days until voters return their verdict.

Mr Biden is reportedly to win endorsements on Friday from more than 160 people who worked for former President George W Bush or for past Republican presidential candidates Mitt Romney and John McCain.

BREAKING: Japanese Prime Minister, Abe, to Resign for Health Reasons

0

Japanese Prime Minister, Shinzo Abe, is set to resign for health reasons, officials from his LDP party say.

He has suffered from the disease ulcerative colitis for many years but his condition is thought to have worsened recently.

Public broadcaster NHK said Mr Abe, 65, wanted to avoid causing problems for his government.

Earlier this week, he became Japan’s longest continuously serving prime minister, after taking office in 2012.

In 2007 he resigned abruptly from an earlier term as prime minister because of his struggles with ulcerative colitis, a chronic condition affecting the large intestine, that he has lived with since he was a teenager.

Two hospital visits in one week sparked questions about whether Mr Abe’s health was deteriorating. He had been due to serve until September 2021.

He has not revealed what the visits were for but one is reported to have lasted nearly eight hours.

Officials from his governing Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) have previously dismissed speculation that he would step down, saying the prime minister’s health was fine.

On Tuesday one of his aides told Reuters that he thought Mr Abe would fulfil his tenure.

Akira Amari, head of the LDP’s tax panel, dismissed the suggestion that the prime minister would dissolve parliament’s lower house for a snap general election soon.

“There won’t be a snap election for the time being,” he said.

Still, rumours have persisted about Mr Abe’s growing fatigue as he fields growing scrutiny for his handling of the coronavirus pandemic, at a time when approval ratings for his cabinet have dropped.

Mr Abe has a reputation as a staunch conservative and nationalist, and for stimulating growth with his aggressive economic policy known as “Abenomics”.

He has strengthened Japan’s defences and boosted military spending, but has been unable to revise the constitution’s pacifist Article 9, which bans a standing army for anything other than self-defence.

A resignation or an announced intention to resign would trigger a vote within Mr Abe’s LDP to replace him as president.

This election would be followed by a parliamentary vote to elect a new prime minister.

The winner would hold the post until the end of Mr Abe’s term in September 2021.
