Osinbajo advocates stiffest punishment for rape offenders

0

The Vice President of Nigeria, Yemi Osinbajo has advocated stiffest punishment for perpetrators of sexual harassment in the country.

The Vice President spoke on Wednesday at a webinar on anti-sexual harassment themed “Finding Safe Spaces for Female Students in Nigerian Universities”, organized by the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife.

The event was based on the book authored by notable journalist and former presidential spokesman, Olusegun Adeniyi, titled “Naked Abuse: Sex For Grades In African Universities”.

Osinbajo said it was a wrong notion that victims or potential victims of sexual harassment were architects of their fate especially by their attitude, dressing, or willingness to be in compromising places with their violators, stressing that such view should be resisted in every situation.

He particularly advocated stricter punishments for rape offenders especially in situations involving lecturers and their female students.

Osinbajo said developing and adhering to a set of ethical codes of conduct for conversations and interactions involving lecturers and students in universities would greatly address the problem.

The Vice President, who spoke on ways of resolving issues around sexual harassment in Nigerian universities, said the search for answers to creating safe spaces for female students in universities must begin from the question of why such an evidently rampant crime was so under-reported.

He also recommended the adoption of a mandatory well thought-out whistleblower process emphasizing confidentiality, professional legal and medical help for victims or potential victims.

Blasphemy: Teenager appeals 10 years imprisonment sentence

0

A 13-year-old boy, Omar Farouq, sentenced to 10 years imprisonment for blasphemy by the Upper Sharia Court of Kano has on Monday 7th September, 2020 filed an appeal at the State High Court to challenge his conviction.

Farouq, through his counsel, Kola Alapinni, is asking the court to set aside the whole of the judgement of the Upper Sharia Court of Kano.

Omar Farouq was sentenced to 10 years imprisonment with menial labour for blasphemy by the same Sharia Court and the same date in Filin Hockey, Kano, Nigeria that sentenced Yahaya Sharif-Aminu to death for blasphemy

But in the appeal, Alapinni contended on a sole ground of appeal that the appellant’s trial, conviction and sentencing by the Upper Sharia Court, pursuant to Kano State Penal Code Law 2000 were unconstitutional, null and void, having grossly violated and conflicted with the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999, as amended, the African Charter on Human and Peoples Right and Universal Declaration of Human Rights respectively.

He contended that Penal Sharia Code law is only applicable and permissible in Islamic theocracies or countries whose constitution allows for such laws, whereas Nigeria is a secular state with constitutional democracy and the constitution being the supreme law.

He added that the offense of blasphemy for which Farouq was convicted is no longer a cognizable offense in Nigeria by virtue of section 10, standing alone or in conjunction with section 38 and 39 of the constitution respectively.

In addition, he contended that the State was quick to charge the accused for blasphemy but neglected and refused to provide him legal representation even though there is an existing framework for legal aid in Kano State.

Egypt’s prosecutor to probe missing AFCON trophy saga

The Egypt’s sports ministry said on Wednesday that it has referred a probe into a missing African Cup of Nations trophy which Egypt has possessed since 2010 to the prosecutor general after a string of explosive allegations.

The investigation was launched last week when celebrated ex-national goalkeeper, Ahmed Shobair said the Egyptian Football Association (EFA) found that the gold trophy, along with other awards from previous tournaments, had gone missing.

Officials were preparing to inaugurate a museum showcasing Egypt’s football memorabilia in time for the EFA’s centenary when the loss was realized, Shobair said on his popular talkshow.

Another former football hero, Magdy Abdelghani, along with the EFA, waded into the debate suggesting ex-national team players and coaches, Ahmed Hassan and Shawky Gharib knew of the 2010 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) trophy’s whereabouts.

But former football officials said it was looted during a fire in 2013 caused by protesters, known as the Ultras, at the EFA headquarters in Cairo.

The accusations prompted the sports ministry and EFA to kick off investigations that have been closely monitored by Egypt’s legions of fervent football fans.

Hassan and Gharib have both dismissed any link to the disappearance.

The continent’s football governing body, the Confederation of African Football, said on Sunday that it had learnt with shock reports of missing AFCON trophies from the Egyptian Football Association secretariat.
