US, Iran battle over sanctions at World Court

0

The United States and Iran will face off at the UN’s top court on Monday in the latest round of a battle over sanctions on Tehran reimposed by President Donald Trump.

Tehran dragged Washington to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague in 2018 after Trump pulled the US out of a landmark international nuclear deal with Iran.

They will argue over the coming week about whether the court, set up after World War II to deal with disputes between UN member states, actually has jurisdiction in the case.

Iran says the sanctions brought back by the Trump administration breach the 1955 “Treaty of Amity” between the two countries, signed long before the 1979 Iranian revolution severed ties.

Tehran won an early victory in October 2018 when the ICJ ordered sanctions on humanitarian goods to be eased as an emergency measure while the overall lawsuit is dealt with.

The US responded by formally ending the treaty, agreed when Iran was ruled by the Western-oriented shah, and accusing Iran of using the ICJ for propaganda purposes.

The United States will first address the court on Monday at 1300 GMT about whether judges have jurisdiction in the case, while Iran will speak on Wednesday.

A decision on that issue could take several months, while a final judgment will take years.

Mailafia scales fence as strange people try to break gate

0

A former Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Dr. Obadiah Mailafia has revealed how he scaled the fence of his home as strange people tried to break down his gate.

According to the ex-presidential candidate, the incident occurred last week Thursday, Daily Post reported.

He was reported to have stated this on Monday shortly after honouring a third invitation extended to him by the Department of State Services (DSS) in Jos, Plateau State.

Mailafia had last month accused a sitting northern governor of being the Commander of Boko Haram on a radio programme.

The claim pitted him against the security agencies, causing the DSS to invite him three times and the police once.

However, he refused to honour the police invitation, and headed to court for a restrainng order against the law enforcement agency.

He accused the security agencies of persecuting him for being the voice of the millions of voiceless Nigerians facing security challenges.

Mailafia further claimed that his life was in danger as he has been received threat calls.

“I have indicated that I have reason to believe that my life has been in danger.

“I have no conclusive proof but I get threats, I get calls.

“Where I was staying, on Thursday, I saw some strange people at the gate trying to break in. I jumped the fence and escaped because I don’t know who they are,” the economist stated.

Ogun Government Grants Land Investors 50% Discount on Land Use, Amenities Charges

0

The Ogun Government has granted a 50 percent discount to investors on all Land Use and Amenities charges.

Mr. Kunle Somorin, Chief Press Secretary to Gov. Dapo Abiodun, stated this in a statement in Abeokuta on Monday.

According to him, the grace will be enjoyed by all investors who showed up for payment on or before the end of September.

Somorin stated that the present administration had put a mechanism in place to make it convenient for investors to pay their Land Use and Amenities charges, bearing in mind the harsh economy affecting many countries as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

He added that the state government has the overall economic development of the state in mind and there was a need to further strengthen the existing relationship with various industries domiciled in the state.

He stated that the reduction was in good faith to ensure that the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) agenda is built upon as the government can not do it alone.

Somorin further noted that taxpayers who pay their Land Use and Amenities charges between Oct. 1 and Oct. 31, would enjoy a 25 percent discount.

“Payments made from Nov. 1 to Nov. 30, would attract a 10 percent discount, those who had already paid before the government made the decision would get their credit.

“Payment has been simplified for the convenience of business owners through the use of payment codes via the online platform, which could either be done through the use of the card, USSD, and internet banking.

“To pay using the online platform, business owners are to visit http://pay luac.ogunstate.gov.ng, enter their bills payment code and the payers contact details, click on make payment button, select card, USSD or internet banking options to complete the payment.

“A payment receipt would be sent automatically by the REMITA platform, with a payment notification sent to the payer by the OGSG LUAC platform, on entering of the payers’ payment code, the discounted amount payable would on such bill be calculated automatically and displayed.

“Business owners are advised to visit any bank branch of their choice nationwide to make their payment.

“It would be recalled that the government had inaugurated the State Business Environment Council to focus on sustainable reforms that would address challenges militating against ease of doing business and limiting effective private sector participation of the state economy,” he said.

To fix Nigeria’s economic mess, we must change constitutional foundations – Moghalu

0

The 2019 presidential candidate of the Young Progressive Party (YPP), Dr. Kingsley Moghalu, says Nigeria’s economic woes will continue until the nation’s polity is restructured.

The former Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) noted that Nigeria’s overdependence on disappearing oil revenue was unsustainable.

He stated this in a tweet on Tuesday, in apparent reaction to Finance Minister, Zainab Ahmed’s comment that the nation’s revenue had dropped by 65 percent.

She added that this drastic drop compelled the Federal Government to end fuel subsidy in the country.

This followed another announcement by the Debt Management Office (DMO) that Nigeria’s total public debt stock now stood at N31 trillion.

According to the government agency, the public debt stock increased by about N2.38 trillion, or $6.593billion, as of June 30.

Reacting, Moghalu said the nation’s constitutional foundations must be rejigged to end its economic mess.

The economist said a truly federal constitution would incentivise the component units to generate wealth rather than rely on the centre for hand-outs.

Moghalu wrote, “Nigeria’s economic mess can’t be fixed without changing our constitutional foundations.

“The 1999 Constitution mandates us to “share” a vanishing cake (crude oil revenues).

“A new, truly FEDERAL constitution will set up real incentives to produce and create wealth. #Restructuring”
