Stakeholders of the Nigeria Halal industry have for the first time organised a virtual roundtable where they discussed issues that are key to the sustainability of the industry, Muslim News can report.

The roundtable, held on Saturday, September 19, was hosted by the Halal Compliance and Food Safety (HaCFoS) Limited.

Muslim News findings revealed that the session had in attendance representatives of corporate organisations like the Halal Certification Authority (HCA), Jaiz International Halal Certification, and Halal Standard Development Trust (HASDAT).

The meeting, we reliably gathered, was necessitated by the growing recognition of the Nigeria Halal industry in the globe, coupled with the significant opportunities that exist for Halal trade in Africa.

In his opening remarks, Dr. Salisu Monsuru Adekunle, who represented HaCFoS, reiterated the need for the stakeholders’ roundtable discussion.

He stated that the main purpose of the roundtable is to ensure better representation at the international level, adding that coordination of the Halal stakeholders’ activities in the country, leadership, and governance of the halal industry are also key issues.

During the deliberation, the stakeholders identified some of the challenges facing the industry.

Professor Ibrahim Oreagba, the Chairman of the HCA, called the attention of the stakeholders to lack of halal laboratory and proliferation of Islamic scholars who arbitrarily issue the halal logos to manufacturers without due process.

He said, the stakeholders must work together to address these challenges which he said go against “Global halal industry best practices.”

Dr. Abdullah Shuaib, a director at Jaiz International halal Certification expressed concern over the lack of unified halal standard and logo, inadequate professionals, and the need for proper training.

Dr. Shuaib emphasized the need for cooperation, solidarity, and collaboration among the stakeholders, while encouraging them to always lend helping hands to one another.

“This would not only have a significant impact on the industry but it will ensure sustainable growth and benefit everyone,” he noted.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Luqman Zakariyyah, Chairman of HaCFoS proposed an establishment of a central national body to ensure best practices and oversees activities of the Nigerian halal industry.

According to him, Halal professionals should be well trained in stages and placed on different levels based on their capacities and experiences. This is to ensure quality and sustainable halal industry in the country.”

Mr. Sulaiman Olokodana who is the Secretary to the HASDAT called for adequate awareness on the benefits of the halal industry, adding that, HaCFoS is in the best position to handle the training through collaboration with all the stakeholders.

He presented the activities of the organisation which majorly focused on halal certification in his presentation, disclosing that some products from both national and multinational companies had been certified.

Mr. Sulaiman Olokodana, in his presentation also disclosed that HASDAT had equally certified a number of products, especially from the agricultural products companies.

Another speaker, Mr. Kamil Shuaib informed the stakeholders that Jaiz has been working to promote Halal Industry in Nigeria, especially on manpower development.

In the communiqué issued at the end of the 3-hour webinar, the stakeholders unanimously agreed on certain steps such as Consultation with the Nigerian Supreme Council of Islamic Affairs (NSCIA) and all other relevant bodies will be carried out to achieve this great body.

This national body will comprise of the representatives from the existing registered stakeholders. A committee led by HASDAT and a representative from each organization in attendance was set up for the wide consultation and to draft a working paper for the establishment of the central body and all its affiliates.

The stakeholders in attendance expressed their satisfaction over the roundtable with the hope that it will improve collaborative effort and the steps taken will accelerate and ensure the sustainability of the Halal industry in the country.

AfDB president, others task Nigerians in Diaspora on national development

0

Dr Akinwumi Adesina, President of the African Development Bank (AfDB) and some notable Nigerians have urged their compatriots in the Diaspora to key into government efforts for national development.

Some of the notable Nigerians include Mr Innocent Chukwuma, CEO of Innoson Group, and Nigeria’s High Commissioner to Canada, Amb. Adeyinka Asekun.

They called on Nigerians in Diaspora to key into efforts by the Federal Government to harness their resources directly for national development

The advice came at the just concluded 20th Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the Nigerians in Diaspora Organisation, Americas (NIDOA) with the theme, “Harnessing Diaspora Capital for Sustainable Development in Nigeria.

According to them, Nigeria’s emigrant communities are critical national assets mostly needed now to drive their country’s post-COVID-19 economic recovery efforts.

However, they called for a conducive environment and formal structures back home to leverage the capitals, influence and connections of the Nigerian Diaspora.

In a pre-recorded video message, Adesina highlighted the strong financial power of Nigerians abroad as shown in their remittances averaging $22 billion (N8 trillion) annually.

“Think of it. What this means is that Nigeria’s value added Diaspora is a significant net gain rather than a brain drain.

“The Diaspora, however, is more than money of course. The Diaspora represents knowledge, strategic influence and networks.

“In a world of hyper change, Nigeria needs its best and brightest to tackle the most challenging issues of our time, and to ensure its rightful place in the League of Nations.

“Together, let us inspire a greater Nigeria, a developed, prosperous and dynamic country bursting with energy and hope,’’ he said.

The AfDB president lauded President Muhammadu Buhari’s foresight in setting up the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM) to properly harness their “brains, innovation and entrepreneurial capacities’’.

He called for the right policy and political engagement to attract Nigerians abroad and properly tap their huge capitals for national development.

In a keynote address, Innoson noted that the huge remittances of the Diaspora to Nigeria is an indication that they are interested in the wellbeing of their fatherland.

“But remittances are not enough. We need them back to the country. We need the strength from abroad to power our economy.

“We need the Diaspora human capital to come back and contribute to our GDP. This is the way forward to achieve our greatness.

“If Innoson Vehicles after 10 years is still waxing strong in spite of the challenges, I believe that you too can succeed in Nigeria, because whatever that is wrong in Nigeria can be corrected with what is right in Nigeria,’’ he said.

The automaker also stressed the need for government to create the right environment for Nigerians to return home and contribute their quota.

For his part, the Nigerian High Commissioner to Canada said the quantum of financial flows from the Diaspora was capable of sustaining Nigeria’s development if properly channeled.

Asekun said: “I believe it is commendable and worthwhile to send in money for day-to-day living and for consumption.

“But I also believe that the whole impact of these flows will be felt upon the development process when a structure is brought to bear in the process.

“Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa made very valuable points in terms of all the various initiatives in place such as the opportunities for mortgages,’’ he said.

Turning to Nigerians, home and abroad, he noted that the nation’s development is in their hands, adding that the creation of an enabling environment in Nigeria is also their collective responsibility.

The Chairperson of NiDCOM, Mrs Abike Dabiri-Erewa, highlighted some programmes the commission has initiated, including a Diaspora trust fund.

“Recently we put in place the Nigerians in Diaspora Trust Fund Committee to work out modalities so that we can have a proper structure for Nigerians who want to invest at home.

“The committee was inaugurated by the Minister of Foreign Affairs not long ago and will soon report back to us.

“We are also working with the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria for what we call Diaspora Mortgage Programme where you can sit in the comfort of your home and be able to get a mortgage and then a home in Nigeria.

“There is no excuse any more. You now have NIDCOM to work with and we are determined that the Diaspora will never be ignored again in the annals of our country,’’ she said.

All the speakers lauded the “tremendous achievements’’ of NIDOA in the last 20 years, especially its influence on government’s policies that led to the establishment of NIDCOM.

Earlier, the Chairman, Board of Trustees of NIDOA, Mr Obed Monago, said the organisation had sustained its mission, including promoting patriotism, networking and cooperation among Nigerians in the Diaspora since its creation in 2000.

Monago said the theme of this year’s AGM was apt coming at a time Nigeria needs all the resources it could muster to recover from COVID-19.

“The impact of COVID-19 has shown that time is now for the Diaspora to think inwards and homewards and act in the most definite ways to help bring about the socio-economic development that is so much needed in our country.

“However, we will passionately ask the federal government to provide that enabling environment for us to build our country.

“This includes corruption eradication, rule of law, transparency, checks and balances, infrastructure, constant power supply, accountability, favourable monetary policies, ease of doing business, among others,’’ he said.

As stated, the projects tagged “Operation 377”, will saw the construction of over 250 roads will and 23 power projects and that the execution would be led by the Deputy Governor, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat.

Sanwo-Olu said that the intervention was initiated in response to the series of requests by the various communities across the state to address their specific challenges, and that the execution of the projects would change the grassroots development narratives.

Speaking on Friday during the ceremony held at the Adeyemi Bero Hall, Government Secretariat, Alausa, Sanwo-Olu said that plans had been concluded to mobilize contractors to site and ensure commencement of the projects across the 377 wards.

“The state-wide 377 ward projects being launched today are state intervention projects in grassroots development. The projects are conceived in response to requests by the various communities across the State to address specific challenges. These projects are not universal; they are diverse, reflecting the needs of each ward across the state.

“The implementation of the projects will commence immediately after this official flag-off, as contractors have been fully mobilized to move to the sites. I urge residents who are the ultimate beneficiaries of these projects to take ownership of them by monitoring the implementation process and ensure that the jobs conform to the quality and standards specified in the project designs,” the Governor was quoted as saying in a statement by his spokesperson, Gboyega Akosile.

Sanwo-Olu said that identifying the needs and the design of the projects was in line with the concept of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and participatory governance in which the people are considered as key stakeholders.

The Governor described the grassroots as “the bedrock of development”, stressing that the projects were strategic in promoting the wellbeing of the people across communities, adding that his administration would continue to give residents a voice on issues that affect them.

“This administration’s development agenda is driven by the spirit to build a Greater Lagos that is livable and conducive for the growth and development of enterprise. The dream of a Greater Lagos is not exclusive; it is predicated on the principle of inclusiveness by which development is not considered as satisfactory until it has addressed the yearnings of the greatest number of the people who contribute to the commonwealth.”

Sanwo-Olu urged all public officers to be responsible in dealing with the people, noting that governance would be meaningless without the input of the people from whose mandate public officers derived their powers.

Dr Hamzat, who is the Chairman of the Projects’ Implementation Committee, said that all contractors would move to their sites next Monday, noting that the intervention was in demonstration of the governor’s campaign promise to run an inclusive administration.

He said that the projects’ selection followed a meeting between the Governor and all 377 councillors across the state during which Sanwo-Olu asked them to name specific projects they wanted executed in their wards.

“The projects will be implemented by contractors in collaboration with Ministries, Departments and Agencies, including the Ministry of Works and Infrastructure, Ministry of Local Government and Community Affairs, Directorate of Technical Service, Lagos State Electricity Board and Public Works Corporation. Supervision and monitoring of the projects will be done in collaboration with the ward councillors and party executives.,” he said.

Buhari assures credible gubernatorial election in Ondo

0

President Muhammadu Buhari has assured that the forthcoming gubernatorial election in Ondo State would be free and fair, saying that his administration would ensure citizens across Nigeria were given a level playing ground in electing their choiced persons to leadership positions.

This, he said, was in line with his commitment in ensuring that innocent Nigerians don’t suffer regardless of political party, ethnic, tribe or religious affiliations across the country.

President Buhari maintained that plans had been concluded to ensure all players involved in the exercise were neutral in discharging their duties and responsibilities toward ensuring credible elections during next month poll.

“I thank you for bringing your deputy and supporters to come and see me after beating my party. I am supposed to preside over all Nigerian interests whether I like it or not, but my single desire is to make sure that innocent people don’t suffer. That message I got across to the Inspector General of Police, that elections must be free and fair.

“If contestants have too much money and they decide to spray, so be it. But what I insist is, nobody should go and raise a counter force to the government, arm heavily-drugged thugs to go and humiliate people.

“I want Nigerians to appreciate that I respect them as Nigerians and that I am bound by the oath I have taken, that their security is in the hands of God and in the hands of the government, which I am leading,” Buhari was quoted as saying in a statement by his spokesperson, Femi Adesina.

President Buhari noted that as the leader of the governing party, and despite the fact that the party has lost some states in elections, he wishes to leave behind a political culture based on integrity.

“We have lost states across the country. Now I do not like to escape the responsibility, seeing as the leader of the country, I am also the leader of my party, that I am not leading the party very well.

“I am trying to make sure that the party is built on a civilised basis, rule of law and respect for human rights and human beings, right from polling units to local governments, to states up to Abuja and that’s what I have been insisting as my contribution to the National Working Committee and executive of the party. I know we are a developing country, a developing economy and trying to develop our political culture. I want the development of political culture to be based on integrity and accountability. Let people work very hard and earn what they are looking for through their hard work and through fair competition,” the President said.

In his remarks, Governor Obaseki thanked the President for ensuring that fair play reigned during the election which saw him victorious.

“You would recall a couple of weeks before the election, I came to see you and you assured me that we were going to have a free, peaceful and credible election. That is what we had during the election of 19th September and the whole world has acclaimed that Edo election was perhaps one of the best conducted in recent times in Nigeria. This could not have been possible without your insistence that the right things be done, and for that, we want to say thank you very much,” he said.

0

No fewer than 10 Egyptians and seven Sri-Lankans deportation have been approved by the Federal Government after violating their entry condition into the country, a situation said to have been against the nation’s Immigration Act.

Their actions, the government said, contravened section 45, subsection 2, section 46, subsection 1 and Section 47, subsection 1 of the Nigeria Immigration Act 2015.

The Minister of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola, said that the deportation of 10 Egyptians and seven Sri-Lankans were with immediate effect after violating conditions for their entry into the country.

Equity News had reported that the state chapter of suspended Oyetunde Ojo, son-in-law to the party’s national leader, Bola Tinubu, Special Adviser to the President on Political Matters, Babafemi Ojudu, and nine others over alleged anti-party activities.

“Dr. Kayode Fayemi, the Executive Governor of Ekiti State is hereby suspended from the Party in view of his numerous anti-Party activities especially his role in the recent concluded governorship election in Edo State which is contrary to the provisions of Article 21 (A) (ii) of the APC Constitution.

“For five days prior to the Edo elections, Gov Fayemi hosted PDP big wig Mr. Femi Fani- Kayode in the government house in Ado Ekiti in the run-up to the Edo elections. It was here they perfected the coup against our party in Edo State,” the state’s APC SEC said in a statement.

The party claimed that the National Secretariat was yet to receive communication from the state chapter on the purported suspensions and that Fayemi remains the party leader in the state.

“The actions are a nullity as the Party’s National Secretariat is yet to receive communication from the state chapter on the purported suspensions. We strongly advise all members to adhere to our Party constitution. Governor Kayode Fayemi remains the leader of the party in Ekiti State.

“In line with the mandate of the Governor Mai Mala Buni-led APC Caretaker/Extra-Ordinary National Convention Planning Committee and the President’s admonition to party members to ensure and support ongoing amicable and rancour-free settlement of internal party disputes, we call on our esteemed party members and leaders in Ekiti State to be duly guided.

“For the avoidance of doubt, the Architect Paul Omotosho-chaired APC Ekiti State Working Committee is the authentic, valid and duly recognised Executive as no factions or divisions exist in the state chapter,” the statement said.

Bauchi Govt. okays school reopening, sets modalities

0

The Bauchi State Government has disclosed that approval has been given for reopening of schools across the state and resumption of academic activities from October and that modalities had been put in place to ensure safety of teachers, students and others that make up the school communities.

It explained that the decison to reopen schools from October 12 for academic activities that were disrupted by outbreak of coronavirus was reached after careful considerations and deliberations by stakeholders in the state.

The state Commissioner for Education, Aliyu Tilde, said that though approval had been given for schools to reopen, tertiary institutions were exempted from reopening until such times approval was given to the effect.

Briefing newsmen on Friday in Bauchi, Tilde said that primary and secondary schools can reopen from October 12 in full compliance to all safety measures introduced to curb person-to-person transmission of coronavirus.

Furthermore, the commissioner warned that any school that does not meet all the COVID-19 regulations laid down by Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) would not be allowed to reopen.

“At the stakeholders meeting, it was resolved that all primary and secondary schools in the state can reopen starting from Oct. 12, subject to their adherence to all the COVID-19 regulations on school reopening.

“We shall expand the COVID-19 school reopening template that was successfully used to reopen the SS3 classes in August, to cover the reopening of other classes.

“No school shall reopen unless and until it meets the conditions stipulated in the schedule of reopening. This simply means that not all schools may open on the said date,’’ he said.

Tilde explained that the NCDC focal person on COVID-19 in the state would monitor and ensure compliance with the conditions stipulated and that all schools with low class population could resume fully and run their usual school hours since social distance could easily be achieved, while observing other COVID-19 school protocols.

“However, to meet COVID-19 requirement for social distancing, schools with moderate and high sizes will stagger their hours and days vertically and horizontally,’’ he said.

Tilder further explained that all public schools would be decontaminated before reopening, adding that all teaching and supporting staff in public schools were required to fully resume work at their duty station on Oct. 3 to prepare for fully for the school calendar year.
