0

Prosperity Cup Women’s defending Champions, Niger Delta University Queens have been ousted from Nigeria’s biggest grassroots football spectacle, the Bayelsa Governor’s Football showpiece .

In a keenly contested match at the BDGS battle ground, high-scoring Ezuogha Queens defeated defending champions, NDU Queens by a lone goal to progress to the next round of the competition.

Ezougha, which had put up a ruthless performance in their opening fixture scoring eight goals against Diamond Stars, had to dig deep to find the back of their opponents net in the 67th minute through Numulayefa Princess.

In the second match of the day at the same venue, Stardom Life Sports Academy of Ogboloma pipped Seaside Academy of Ovom by a lone goal. Paul Favour’s goal on 37 minutes was all the Ogboloma-based team needed to advance to the next round of the tournament.

The Kpansia arena will take centre stage on Wednesday, when Jerry Queens FC of Ogbia confront Afini Ladies of Yenagoa at 3.00p.m., while Crystal Stars will keep a date with Global Queens by 4.30p.m.

Action continues on Thursday at the same venue with Akeddei Queens from Sagbama LGA taking on Bayelsa State College of Nursing Sciences, BYSCON Queens by 3.00p.m. while Niger Delta Queens trade hard tackles with Golden Sun Sports Club of Yenagoa at 4.30p.m.

Speaking Tuesday’s game, victorious coach of Stardom Life Sports Academy, Inemotimi Kofi, said both sides gave their best, pointing out that his team would have done better if not for some players who missed the match because of examination commitments.

According to him, he knew the game was going to be tough for his team, stating that they have been in close camping preparing for the competition, which gave his team a slight advantage.

He, however, expressed the hope that his full squad will be available for their next tie.

Also speaking , head coach of Seaside Academy, Awusa Anthony, said in addition to the cheap goal his players conceded which demoralized them, his team’s wastefulness in front of goal was one of their greatest undoing. He said they would go back to the drawing board, correct their mistakes and come back stronger next season.

Nigeria Secures $5.5 Billion Health Investments, Launches Pharmaceutical Training Academy

Under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Nigeria has secured $5.5 billion in private sector funding for 22 new large-scale health sector manufacturing projects. According to the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Muhammad Ali Pate, the Federal Government has also partnered with the Empower School of Health (Geneva) to establish the Empower Academy Nigeria — Africa’s foremost pharmaceutical manufacturing training institute.

This development follows Nigeria’s recent success in securing €1 billion from the European Investment Bank (EIB) and $1 billion from Afreximbank to support health sector value chain localization.

Empower Academy Nigeria will:

– Focus on training a world-class workforce for pharmaceutical manufacturing.

– Support local production of pharmaceutical excipients, APIs, inhalers, extended-release medications, dermatological patches, and more.

– Train and upskill up to 2,000 Nigerian professionals annually.

-Offer certification courses in collaboration with Africa CDC, WHO, UNITAR, and the International Federation of Pharmacists (FIP).

– Feature cutting-edge equipment and facilities for training in process engineering, regulatory compliance, quality control, and environmental monitoring.

According to the Coordinating Minister (@muhammadpate), this initiative marks a historic step in Nigeria’s drive for health sector self-sufficiency and global best practice adoption.

Senator Adeola Denies $400 Billion Loan Claim Under Buhari’s Administration

0

The chairman of Senate Committee on Appropriation, Senator Solomon Adeola has denied news report that the Administration of former President Mohammadu Buhari borrowed $400 billion to stabilize the naira against the dollar during his tenure.

Contrary to the report in some major newspapers and some online blogs on Saturday April 26,2025, the senator at his Town Hall Meeting/ Mega Empowerment Programme with constituents in Ayetoro, Ogun State, speaking mostly in local Yoruba language, has justified the removal of oil subsidy and the floating of the exchange rate by the incumbent administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu saying without these bold fiscal policies, Nigerian economy was headed for a collapse.

Senator Adeola stated that previous administrations have been spending trillions of naira on fuel subsidy and defending the naira against the dollar adding that this was to the benefit of a very negligible number of Nigerians while Nigeria accumulated huge national debt.

At no point did the senator mentioned the name of the former President Buhari or made specific reference to his administration as incurring a debt of $400billion. It is therefore clear that the debt figure attributed to former President Buhari administration is a misquotation from reporters’ translation of the senator’s speech from Yoruba to English language.

The misquotation must have come about from confusing 40 for 400 in translation as the figure of debt for previous administrations. It is also noted that most of the reporters of the major newspapers that reported the misquotation did not personally attend the event and relied on some online blogs for their story.

Senator Adeola holds former President Buhari in high esteem and acknowledge his valiant efforts in piloting the economy under the circumstance he found it during his tenure.

50kg Rice Price Dropped To N58,000 In Nigeria

0

The price of a 50kg bag of rice has dropped to N58,000 in some parts of Nigeria, particularly around remote areas, amid imports from the Republic of Benin, a report by S&P Global has said.

The report said that the West African parboiled rice market has slumped to a near two-year low as supplies flood into regional markets following India’s removal of export duties on parboiled rice.

A 50kg bag of rice has dropped from N80,000 to N58,000 as a result of the influx of the commodity to neighbouring Benin Republic, from where it enters Nigeria.

Platts, part of S&P Global Commodity, reports that the influx of lower-priced rice from India has filled warehouses to capacity in Benin, according to market participants.

Between September and December, India was said to have exported approximately 2.11 million metric tonnes of parboiled rice to West Africa, up sharply from 720,000 metric tonnes in the same period of 2023.

According to the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority, in 2024 as a whole, India exported 5.35 million metric tonnes of parboiled rice to West Africa, up from 3.9 million metric tonnes in 2023.

Commenting, a trader based in Togo said the current situation in almost every region of West Africa is the same, quiet and bearish.

As Nigeria, the largest rice market for Benin, continues to illegally import rice from Benin, both local and imported rice prices in Nigeria have plummeted over the past two weeks.

It was said that the price for a 50kg local rice had dropped from N80,000 or N90,000 to N60,000, while Indian imported rice prices have dropped to N80,000.

“Despite the price decline, demand has not risen correspondingly. With prices continuing to slide daily, buyers are adopting a cautious approach, waiting for stabilisation before making purchases,” the report said.

A trader based in Benin said demand was only likely to increase once the Christmas season comes into focus around September.

Our correspondent reports that Nigeria is the major consumer of rice imported into the Benin Republic.

In border communities in Ogun, the staple sells at prices below N50,000 due to the proximity of their communities to the Benin Republic.

Despite the ban on the importation of rice, the commodity remains the most smuggled product, even as the Nigerian Customs Service has sleepless nights battling rice smugglers.

Osimhen Scores Goal 31 Of The Season In Galatasaray’s 5-1 Rout

Osimhen shames his doubters, scores 31st goal of the season in Galatasaray’s rout.

Nigeria and Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen celebrated his 22nd goal of the season in the Super Lig and 31st in all competitions as Galatasaray secured another important win.

Nigeria and Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen delivered another statement performance on Sunday, netting his 31st goal of the season as Galatasaray cruised to a commanding 5-1 victory over Eyupspor in the Turkish Super Lig.

Osimhen, who has faced questions about his ability since his high-profile move to Istanbul, silenced critics with a dynamic display.

The 26-year-old was instrumental from the start, providing the assist for Roland Sallai’s opener before setting up Lucas Torreira to double Galatasaray’s lead after the break.

Osimhen then got on the scoresheet himself in the 71st minute, making it 3-0 and effectively sealing the result for the league leaders.

Alvaro Morata came off the bench to add two late goals, ensuring Galatasaray’s dominance was reflected on the scoreboard.

Eyupspor managed a consolation through Luccas Claro, but it did little to dampen the visitors’ celebrations.

With this latest strike, Osimhen boasts 22 goals in the Super Lig and 31 in all competitions for the season, a tally that underlines his status as one of Europe’s most sought-after strikers.

His blend of pace, power, and clinical finishing has been key to Galatasaray’s title charge, keeping them five points clear of Jose Mourinho’s Fenerbahçe at the top of the table with just five matches remaining.

Osimhen’s consistency and Morata’s impact off the bench show Galatasaray’s attacking depth as they chase domestic glory and aim to make a splash in Europe.

For Osimhen, this performance is a resounding answer to his doubters and a timely reminder of his world-class pedigree.

I’m Honoured, Excited Over World Bank’s Appointment – Dangote

0

President and CEO of Dangote Group, Aliko Dangote, has expressed gratitude following his appointment to the World Bank’s Private Sector Investment Lab, a global initiative aimed at accelerating private investment and job creation in emerging economies.

In a statement confirming the development, Dangote described the appointment as both an honour and a reflection of his long-standing commitment to economic development through private enterprise.

“I am both honoured and excited to accept my appointment to the World Bank’s Private Sector Investment Lab, dedicated to advancing investment and employment in emerging economies,” Dangote said.

“This opportunity aligns with my long-standing commitment to sustainable development and unlocking the potential of developing economies.”

He referenced the successes of the so-called Asian Tigers, economies that experienced rapid growth through strategic investment, as a source of inspiration for advancing similar outcomes in other parts of the world.

The World Bank announced Dangote’s inclusion on Wednesday as part of a broader expansion of the Lab, which enters a new phase focused on scaling up solutions that attract private capital and generate employment in developing countries.

Other newly appointed members include Bill Anderson, CEO of Bayer AG; Sunil Bharti Mittal, Chairman of Bharti Enterprises; and Mark Hoplamazian, President and CEO of Hyatt Hotels Corporation.

World Bank Group President Ajay Banga noted that the expanded membership underscores the institution’s focus on integrating private-sector leadership into its strategy for global job creation.

“With the expanded membership, we are mainstreaming this work across our operations and tying it directly to the jobs agenda that is driving our strategy,” Banga said.

This isn’t about altruism—it’s about helping the private sector see a path to investments that will deliver returns, and lift people and economies alike. It’s central to our mandate.”

The lab, which was co-chaired in 2023 by Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, previously sought to mobilise £1 trillion in sustainable investment, particularly targeting energy transition projects in emerging markets.

Over the past 18 months, the lab has convened leaders from global financial institutions to identify and address key barriers to private sector investment in low-income economies. Its findings have now been consolidated into five core focus areas, including regulatory and policy certainty, which are being embedded across World Bank operations.

Dangote Group, founded by Aliko Dangote, is the largest conglomerate in West Africa and one of the most prominent on the African continent. With investments spanning cement, fertiliser, salt, sugar, and oil, the group employs over 30,000 people and is Nigeria’s largest private-sector employer and taxpayer.

The company’s flagship project—the $20 billion Dangote Petroleum Refinery & Petrochemicals—is the largest single private investment in Africa.

Dangote also leads the Aliko Dangote Foundation, the largest private philanthropic organisation in sub-Saharan Africa. The foundation primarily supports child nutrition and also funds health, education, economic empowerment, and disaster relief efforts.
