The Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR) and Nasarawa State Government have sealed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on the establishment of the University of Public Relations and Leadership (UPRL) to be located in Gudi, Akwanga local government area of the State.

The MoU signed in Abuja on Monday maps out a number of benefits to the host state, including at least 20 scholarship slots yearly for qualified indigenes, with each of the 13 local government areas represented when the institution takes off.

It also offers 50 concessionary admission slots annually for qualified candidates sponsored by Nasarawa State government, with representation from all the local government areas.

Speaking at the official MoU signing, NIPR President, Dr. Ike Neliaku who described the varsity as a global project noted that it is part of the Institute’s contributions towards addressing leadership gap in Africa which he said is the bane of the continent’s development.

“It is only recently that we started paying attention to issues of leadership, especially in Nigeria. In UK and US, they have institutions that train leaders. The leadership component of UPRL will address the under-development created by bad governance. It will ensure we raise a new generation of credible leaders who will eventually become the new Nigerians that will see to the enthronment of a sustainable new nation”, he said.

While emphasising that Global Alliance for Public Relations and Communication Management is a key partner coming on board to provide global faculty and technical support for the universe, Dr. Neliaku said when completed, it will attract positive attention and further expose the country for global relevance.

In his remarks, governor of Nasarawa State, His Excellency, Engr. Abdullahi Sule who handed over the Conveyance of Approval of Grant of Land for siting of the university reiterated his commitment to ensure that necessary measures are put in place for commencement of the academic institution.

While expressing delight that Nasarawa will be the host state for the global standard academic institution, the governor assured that perimeter fencing of the property will commence immediately, which will be followed by construction of administrative blocks.

He said the UPRL will serve as a hub for manpower development and capacity building for indigenes of Nasarawa and neighbouring states, preparing Nigeria as a hub for equipping leaders for effective service delivery.

NIPR, BPP Collaborate to Stop Quacks from Bidding for PR, Communication Jobs

0

The Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR) and Bureau of Public Procurement (BPP) have agreed to collaborate as regulators to stop quacks from bidding for government contracts, aiming to deepen professionalism as a key component of procurement.

Speaking on Tuesday in Abuja, the Vice President of NIPR, Prof. Emmanuel Dandaura, who led a delegation on a courtesy visit to the BPP said that the activities of quacks and uncertified firms violate the provisions of the Act that established the Institute and constitute threat to the nation’s economy.

He stressed that the law establishing NIPR makes it a criminal offence for any individual or organisation who is not certified by the Institute to bid for or handle public relations briefs, urging the BPP to make NIPR certification a mandatory requirement for PR and communication-related jobs.

“We have a number of quacks operating in the communication domain. We see how government agencies advertise communication jobs and such jobs end up in the hands of uncertified firms, which has caused a lot of damage to the system”, he noted.

In his remarks, the Director General of BPP, Dr. Adebowale Adedokun said that NIPR is a credible organisation and right partner that BPP will leverage to project the activities of the Bureau to the key stakeholders.

Dr. Adedokun informed that contrary to popular belief that procurement is transactional, it supports good governance, stressing BPP’s readiness to work closely with the NIPR to deliver greater value to the nation’s procurement space.

He pointed out that under his leadership, procurement will be professionalised and committed to effective collaboration with the NIPR to fight quackery in both professions.

Speaking during the inspection of the project, the NDDC Managing Director, Dr Samuel Ogbuku, reiterated the Commission’s determination to deliver the road alongside several others, stressing that it was a mandate from President Bola Tinubu.

Lagos 2027: New Opinion Poll Indicates Strong Public Demand For Ambode’s Return

0

As the political drumbeat begins to echo across Lagos ahead of the 2027 governorship race, a familiar name is rapidly dominating the conversation — Akinwunmi Ambode. Recent data from a wide-reaching opinion poll conducted across the 20 Local Government Areas (LGAs) and 37 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) of the state indicates that the former governor may be staging a strong comeback — backed by overwhelming public demand.

The poll, carried out both physically and online by a team of seasoned correspondents and analysts, posed a straightforward question to respondents: “Do you want Akinwunmi Ambode back in 2027?” The results speak volumes.

According to the findings, 59% of respondents expressed clear support for Ambode’s return, citing his impactful tenure from 2015 to 2019. 22% indicated a preference for a fresh face, while 19% remained neutral or undecided, reflecting an electorate that is both politically aware and cautiously optimistic.

Across the sampled demographic — youth groups, civil servants, technocrats, market women, and professionals — Ambode’s legacy looms large. Many referenced his strides in infrastructural development, urban renewal, traffic management, environmental sanitation, and digital innovation.

His administration is particularly remembered for the introduction of smart street lighting to bolster security, massive road expansion projects, and a quiet but efficient governance style. “We want a governor who works without noise — someone who understands Lagos,” said Yinka Ogunremi, one of the respondents.

The sentiment on the streets and in online spaces is not merely nostalgic. It is rooted in performance and a desire for continuity in purposeful governance. For many, Ambode represents a bridge between vision and execution — a technocrat who knew how to get things done with minimal political drama.

Though Ambode leads current public opinion, he is not without competition. Other names generating speculation.

Each of these individuals has loyal followings, strong political backgrounds, and strategic alignments. However, none currently command the grassroots momentum being witnessed around Ambode — a momentum that could reshape political dynamics in the state.

Political observers argue that if Ambode decides to throw his hat into the ring, his candidacy will not only energize the electorate but also redefine the direction of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos.

In the words of a civil servant interviewed in Agege: “Lagos doesn’t need drama, we need delivery — and Ambode has done it before. Let him come back and finish what he started.”

While time will tell if this groundswell of support translates into a formidable movement or formal candidacy, one thing is clear: the race for Lagos 2027 has officially begun, and Akinwunmi Ambode appears to be more than just a contender — he may already be a frontrunner.
