0

The Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Education Loan Fund, Akin Sawyerr said student loans will be disbursed directly to the institutions of applicants to avoid diversion.

He also noted that individuals who obtain the loans will be made to repay their loans two years immediately after completion of the mandatory National Youth Service Corps.

Sawyerr made this known during a meeting with the Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission, Chris Maiyaki in Abuja.

According to a transcript of the meeting obtained by Sunday PUNCH in Abuja, Sawyer said that the sources of NELF funding included; one per cent of all profits accruing to the Federal Government from oil and other minerals; one per cent of taxes, levies and duties accruing from the Federal Inland Revenue Service, Nigeria Immigration Service, Nigerian Custom Service; Education Bonds and Education Endowment Fund schemes.

He also stated that the Education Loan would also be funded through donations, gifts, endowment and revenue accruing from any other source.

Meanwhile, the lecturers under the auspicies of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, the Federal University of Technology, Akure, chapter, has again reiterated its rejection of the proposed students’ loan scheme initiated by the President Bola Tinubu-led administration.

The lecturers described the scheme as a way to starve the public universities of funds, also saying if implemented, it would further stifle Nigerian indigent students.

The Chairman of ASUU of the FUTA, Prof Pius Mogaji, stated this during an award of scholarship to some brilliant and indigent students of the institution on Friday.

Mogaji explained that the proposed scheme would keep students in permanent debt, adding that it would starve public universities of funding by the government.

Army Arrests Dangote Trucks, 3 Others Taking Banned Goods To Cameroon

Nigerian Army Intercepts Two Dangote Trucks, 3 Others Allegedly Transporting Prohibited Goods To Cameroon

Troops of the Nigerian Army have intercepted two Dangote trucks and three others allegedly transporting banned goods to the Republic of Cameroon, SaharaReporters can report.

The trucks, loaded with 600 50kg bags of cement each, were on Friday paraded to journalists at the headquarters of the Nigerian police in Yola, the Adamawa state capital.

The interception followed an executive order banning the transportation of building materials across the country’s border through Adamawa routes by the Adamawa State Governor, Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri.

While jointly displaying the vehicles, the spokespersons for the governor and the police command, Humwashi Wonosikou and SP Suleiman Nguroje respectively, told journalists that the trucks were intercepted a few kilometres before Jamtari, a border village between Nigeria and Cameroon.

Wonosikou said, “We’re here to address a disturbing trend in the state. As if the hardship on the people is not enough; there are some people who would want to test the will of the government and the government is saying such actions are unacceptable.

“We’re all living witnesses when the government came up with a policy of banning the movement of building materials across the country’s border. We’re a border state and we’ve had issues where items are transported across the border.

“But then the government, for building materials, would not want them transported out of the country. You can see behind me are trucks that were apprehended and brought here. They were intercepted by the military.

“And it is believed that these products are being transported out of the country, because if you look at it, where is the community at the border area in Adamawa State that requires this amount of cement to be used?”

On his part, Nguroje said, “Personnel have been deployed throughout the state to enforce the government order, banning transportation of building materials across the border.”

However, officials of the Yola depot of Dangote Cement, who were on the ground, vehemently denied that the products were being taken to Cameroon.

One of them who spoke on condition of anonymity for lack of authority argued, “This is a clear violation of our right to do business! It is absolutely wrong for our trucks to be intercepted within the Nigerian territory.

“The goods in these trucks were procured by our customer, who requested them to be conveyed to Jamtari. It is therefore not in our right to demand an explanation as to why he wants them there.”

But in a dramatic twist, one Abiola Oyetunji, identified on the waybill as the contact person, expressed surprise that the truck had left the company’s depot in Yola.

According to her, the trucks can leave the depot only after the goods have been sold.

“I’ve not sold the cement yet; how could the truck have moved out of the depot in Yola? The driver told me he was at the depot up to this time,” she added.

Dangote Cement Plc is a Nigerian publicly traded multinational cement manufacturer headquartered in Lagos. It is a subsidiary of Dangote Group, a Nigerian multinational industrial conglomerate, founded by Aliko Dangote.

Aliko Dangote, a Nigerian businessman, is Africa’s richest man.

Judge Orders Trump To Pay $364 Million, Strips Business Licenses

0

Judge Engoron issued his long-awaited ruling today.

After conducting an 11-week trial of Trump Org on a case where the New York Attorney General alleged that Donald Trump engaged in a pattern of fraudulent business practices over the court over course of many year, Judge Engoron ordered Trump to pay a massive $372 million in total fines. Trump was also stripped of his business certificates in the State of New York, which makes it virtually impossible for him to continue to conduct business in the state.

The AG also asked Judge Engoron to ban Donald Trump, Jr. and Eric Trump from conducting business in NY for 3 years. Engoron declined to grant that request, finding that there was insufficient proof presented at trial to show that they were aware of their father’s fraudulent schemes.

Engoron had previously found Trump liable on some of the counts and stripped him of his business licenses on those. Trump appealed that case and any punishment was stayed by the court until the appeal is resolved. That is expected to happen now with this fine and suspension on the remaining counts.

Judge Engoron ruled that Trump repeatedly inflated his assets on his financial statements to banks in order to secure favorable financing, often making up numbers in his own head rather than rely on third-party appraisals. Trump’s legal team, led by Alina Habba and Chris Kise, argued that Trump included disclaimer language in these statements that rendered the statements “worthless.” Judge Engoron did not agree, ruling that Trump still had a duty to make good faith financial disclosures and adding a disclaimer clause doesn’t absolve that responsibility.

FG Summons Dangote, BUA Over Rising Cost Of Cement

0

David Umahi, minister of works, has summoned cement manufacturers over the rising cost of the product.

The price of cement has been oscillating between N8,000 and N10,000 per bag from about N4,000 a few weeks ago.

Dangote, BUA, and Lafarge are some of the cement manufacturers summoned by the works ministry.

Orji Uchenna Orji, media aide to the minister, said: “Worried by the escalating cost of cement despite huge patronage by road and housing contractors to cement manufacturers, the Honourable Minister of Works, His Excellency Sen Engr Nweze David Umahi CON, has summoned an urgent meeting of all cement manufacturers in Nigeria”.

Orji quoted his principal as saying that the disparity between ex-factory price and market price is huge.

“It is common knowledge that the manufacturers have their challenges, which we shall look into, but from our findings, the disparity between ex-factory price and the market price is wide,” Umahi was quoted as saying.

“We therefore need to look into the situation and other issues with a view to finding a common front.”

Stop Running Rivers State Without A Budget – APC Tells Fubara

0

Caretaker Chairman, All Progressives Congress (APC), Rivers State chapter, Chief Tony Okocha, has urged Governor Siminalaye Fubara to stop running the state without a budget.

He advised the governor to obey the peace agreement of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu by re-presenting the state budget before the House of Assembly.

Describing the development as a gross financial misconduct by the governor, the APC chieftain accused Fubara of jettisoning an agreement he entered with the President to re-present the budget to a complete house, for peace to reign in the state.

Okocha gave the advice yesterday in Abuja at an event to discuss the imperative of revisiting the president’s intervention for progress in Rivers State.

Okocha, who lamented that the governor was going against the laws of the land by ignoring the House of Assembly, regretted that it had gotten to the point where the assembly now overrides the governor for declining four important bills passed to him by the lawmakers.

He said: “They started it; a few of them were running to Mr. President to intervene in the matter. And Mr. President, as busy as his schedules are, called Rivers people together for a peace meeting. I was there at the meeting with other stakeholders, the governor agreed to implement all the agreements. Now, the way he rushed to present the budget before four assembly members, he also went back and re-presented before the complete house. It is not a difficult task.

“As it stands now, Rivers is sitting on a keg of gun powder that will soon go into flames if the governor does not call himself to order. Running Rivers State without a budget amounts to gross financial misconduct.

“There must be something he is hiding because that is blatant abuse of law and a gross disrespect for the President because it is contained in the eighth agreement he signed to.”

Okocha advised the governor to close his ears to mediocre and fifth columnists, whose business is pecuniary.
