Baba Eto-led The Mandate Movement Is Mainstream, Enjoys Tinubu’s Endorsement — Bamigbade

0

The national leadership of The Mandate Movement has denied the existence of another mainstream of the group, saying the Cardinal James Omolaja Odunmbaku, popularly known as Baba Eto-led leadership is the mainstream and only one, saying it has the support of President Bola Tinubu.

This is in response to a media report at the weekend credited to one Chief Olu Arulogun, who claimed to be the chairman of all chairmen of The Mandate Movement, under the leadership of one Abdullahi Ayinde Enilolobo.

In a statement on Monday by the Director of Media and Publicity of The Mandate Movement, Dr. Seyi Bamigbade, the Movement urged Nigerians to ignore the report, insisting that there is one mainstream The Mandate Movement which is led by Baba Eto.

He noted that The Mandate Movement has the endorsement of the President, Bola Tinubu and could not have said he did not order the creation of the group, saying Chief Arulogun and his cohorts

He said, “As a matter of fact, the relationship between Cardinal Odunmbaku and Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu has been confirmed to have pre-dated the emergence of the latter as Lagos State governor in 1999.

“In the run-up to the election, Odunmbaku was appointed the state chairman of Bola Ahmed Tinubu Campaign Organisation (BATCO) which has metamorphosed into what is today known as the “The Mandate Group.” Interestingly, Baba Eto still remains the National chairman of the group till today and he has continued to enjoy the support of President Tinubu till date.

“Just in case they have forgotten, where were they when Baba Eto served as a member of the Central Working Committee of Alliance for Democracy from 1998 to 2006 when he worked in synergy with Tinubu during a period he was building his structure?”

Dr. Bamigbade further urged Nigerians to continue offering support to the President Tinubu-led administration, expressing hope that the repair processes being carried by the President on the economy will soon yield positive results.

Shettima to Nigerians: Amid hardship, protest in a responsible and mature manner

0

Vice-President Kashim Shettima has appealed to Nigerians to protest the current economic challenges in the country “in a responsible and mature manner.”

He said the economic policies and choices adopted come with challenges and difficulties which would be “more telling on the poor.”

Shettima spoke in Lagos during the 29th pre-Ramadan lecture organised by the University of Lagos Muslim Alumni with the theme, “Economic Reforms for Nigeria: Challenges and Prospects for the Future.”

Represented by his Special Adviser on Political Matters, Dr. Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, the Vice-President also hinted that the forthcoming Ramadan would come with “severe” challenges for many Nigerians.

Daily Trust reports that the removal of subsidy from petroleum and the floating of the naira by the present administration have triggered hyperinflation and the rise in cost of food items.

There have been protests across the country over hardship in the land even as the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu continues to assure that there’s light at the end of the tunnel.

Tinubu recently hit at the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) which recently protested over hardship in the country, saying it is not acceptable to declare strike when the administration is barely a year.

Reiterating, the Vice-President said the reforms might be challenging but the government has no intention to punish Nigerians.

He said, “The leadership of President Tinubu recognizes that this Ramadan will come with severe challenges for most Nigerians. The road to where we are today was long and full of missed opportunities and tragic failures to build on our great potentials.

“The consequences of our past are the stark realities we face today, such as rising cost of living and pessimism over our prospect to turn round our economy in the direction of growth and inclusive development.

“Yet, my brothers and sisters, we do not have the choice of continuing in the direction that brought us where we are today. We have to fix this country, and failure to do this is not an option. All the options we have are difficult and challenging, and they are, without a doubt, more telling on the poor. If there are easier and reliable alternatives to the policy choices we have adopted, we would have adopted them.

“Our administration does not plan to make lives of Nigerians more difficult. Nor do we intend to deceive fellow citizens that the change in direction and the expected outcome can be achieved without pain or sacrifices.

“We are also acutely aware that ours is a set of related Nigerian problems, and the solutions we seek must be genuinely informed by a Nigerian context, not the experiences of others or the preferences of special foreign interests which are removed from consequences of mis-steps or errors of judgement.

“Fellow alumni, I appeal to you to help make space for our administration to achieve the goal of turning our nation around. As products of a distinguished institution, we have learnt that progress is only possible if it is informed by criticism and critical scrutiny. We expect that Nigerians should express their feelings over our circumstances in a responsible and mature manner. We are also a deeply religious people, and we believe in the powers of faith and prayers. Let us be reminded that Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala tests His servants with ease and hardship, and He asks that we pray to Him for relief from hardship, and discipline in times of abundance.

“I join you in praying that Allah will grant us the privilege of undertaking our Ramadan fast as prescribed by Him, and we shall receive the reward.”

President Bola Tinubu has asked Qatari captains of industry to report any Nigerian official who demands any form of bribe before allowing them to do business in the country.

He insisted that Nigeria would no longer be held back by its past dotted with bureaucratic bottlenecks and corruption that stifled the ease of doing business.

Do not offer a bribe to any of our people, and if it is requested or taken from you, report to us. You will have access to me,” Tinubu said at the Nigeria-Qatar Business and Investment Forum in Doha, on Sunday.

Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale, revealed this in a statement he signed Sunday titled ‘President Tinubu to Qatari investors: Report to me of my officials who obstruct progress or ask for bribe; no deviation from path to prosperity.

Tinubu also assured the international business community that Nigeria is ready for serious business, as his administration will deal decisively with any entrenched interests in the country that undermine investor confidence in the Nigerian economy.

He also pledged to remove all bottlenecks standing in the way of profitable and legitimate enterprise, saying, “Do not let perceptions become a hindrance to your will to invest. Nigeria is serious about revolutionising investment promotion.”

The President told Qatari investors that Africa’s largest economy and its systems are being reformed and upgraded, asking Qatar businessmen to report any government official who demands a bribe or any form of inducement at any point in their business endeavour moving forward with full assurance of their direct access to him.

“I am here to give you the assurance that reforms are going on; forget about whatever you heard in the past.

“Whatever is the obstacle or problem that some of you might have experienced; it is in the past because there is no obstacle in the future,” he assured.

Tinubu also assured investors that their money would find easy mobility in and out of the economy.

“We are removing obstacles today, and we are going to continue to remove all obstacles.

“We have done so much within nine months. And I assure you, it is free entry, and free exit.

“Your funds will flow smoothly into and out of our country. Bring your investments,” the President stated.

Looting Of NEMA Warehouse, Symptom Of Impending Revolution – Shehu Sani Warns

0

Former lawmaker and social critic, Senator Shehu Sani, has reacted to the alleged looting of a warehouse belonging to the National Emergency Management Agency of Nigeria, NEMA, by some residents of the Federal Capital Terrritory, FCT.

According to Sani, the development is a dangerous symptom of an impending revolution.

DAILY POST reported some residents of the FCT had looted a warehouse belonging to the NEMA amid the current economic hardship across the country.

It was gathered that the residents carted away foodstuffs and other items.

“Masses looting foodstuffs from a Government Warehouse in our oil rich Nigeria is a dangerous symptom of an impending revolution that must be averted or contained,” he wrote on his X handle on Sunday.

Recall that the International Monetary Fund, IMF, had said that stalled per-capita growth, poverty and high food insecurity have exacerbated the ongoing cost-of-living crisis in Nigeria.

The report emerged amid rising inflation, exchange rate crisis, weak economic growth and business shutdowns.

Don’t Sabotage Tinubu’s Efforts In Fixing Economy – Oyintiloye Tells Governors

0

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Osun State, Olatunbosun Oyintiloye has urged state governors and senior civil servants to give President Bola Tinubu maximum support as he tries to fix Nigeria’s economy.

Oyintiloye said that it is not possible for the president alone to achieve his Renewed Hope Agenda for the people without the support of the governors and top civil servants, who were the engine room of the government.

He said this while speaking with newsmen on Sunday in Osogbo.

Oyintiloye said that the governors needed to support the various initiatives of the president in fixing the economy by utilising their monthly allocation for poverty alleviation in their various states.

The APC Chieftain said that the various efforts of the president in fixing the economy may not be immediately visible to many Nigerians, if the state governors refused to utilise their monthly allocation for the benefit of the masses in their states.

He said: “This is the time for state governors, irrespective of political affiliations to join the president in fixing the economy by attending to the welfare of the people.

“What the president is doing at the centre to fix the economy will only be meaningful to the people, if the state governors can lend a helping hands.

“What the governors are currently collecting as monthly allocation is more than in enough to lift the people out of poverty in relation to what the president is doing.

“While the masses are shouting the name of the president at every slight discomfort, they should also hold their governors accountable, asking them what they are doing with the improved monthly allocation.

To set the record straight, the governors have to come out and tell people of their states the amount they have collected since June last year and how they have administered the funds.

“In the reckoning of most Nigerians now, the governors are seen as part of those sabotaging efforts of the president to lessen effects of the removal of fuel subsidy on the people.

“We are in a very critical situation in which unnecessary bureaucracy which can hinder the efforts of the president be suspended.

“Any act of sabotage in whatever form in the civil service should be rooted out for the sake of the benefit of the masses.”

Oyintiloye, however, urged Nigerians to be patient with the president, adding that with all the various interventions the president is putting in place, the country will soon attain the height of desired greatness.

Cattle Dealers Sue Abia Govt Over Plans To Demolish Houses Inside Market

An Abia State High Court sitting at Isuochi would on March 13, 2024, commence hearing in a suit seeking to stop the state government from going ahead with its plan to remodel the Umuchieze Garki Cattle Market.

The government has also decided to end the practice of cattle dealers and their families making their homes inside the market.

But the cattle dealers and residents of the market have dragged the government to Court following a warning notice served on them by the Town Planning Authority of Umunneochi Local Government, which is poised to commence the demolition of residential houses inside the market.

The suit, No. HUM/9/2024 was filed by 12 persons, including Sarkin Zango, Hussaini Muhammad, and Buba Kedemure, the spokesman of the group, for themselves and on behalf of cattle dealers and the market residents.

In the interim, the court would decide on an application for an interlocutory injunction seeking to restrain the government from carrying out the demolition of residential houses inside the market, pending the hearing and determination of the case.

Since last October, the cattle dealers have been at loggerheads with the Abia government after the Government took a firm decision to remodel the cattle market and make it non-residential, citing security issues.

Joined as defendants in the suit are the state Commissioner for Lands, Chaka Chukwumerije; Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Ikechukwu Uwanna; Chairman of Umunneochi Local Government, Ndubuisi Ike, and the state Commissioner of Police.

Akinwumi Adesina: AFDB Supporting Nigeria With $134m To Cultivate Rice, Maize

0

The African Development Bank (AfDB) says it is supporting Nigeria with $134 million for the cultivation of rice, maize, cassava and soybeans to boost food production.

Akinwumi Adesina, president of the AfDB, disclosed this on Saturday after visiting the Centre for Dryland Agriculture (CDA) at Bayero University, Kano.

Adesina said the bank would support Nigeria in cultivating 300,000 hectares of rice and maize, 150,000 hectares of cassava and 50,000 hectares of soybeans during the 2024 planting season.

“This March, the AfDB is supporting Nigeria to cultivate 118,000 hectares of heat-tolerant varieties of wheat and another 150,000 hectares of maize,” Adesina said.

“We live in an era of climate change and yet only 3 percent of African agriculture is under irrigation. We have to make sure we help our farmers with information that is timely and appropriate.

“We have no alternative but to adapt to climate change; adopt better ways of using water, particularly in the cultivation of dry land crops that are more resilient and tolerant.”

The economist said the AfDB would provide grants for the CDA and collaborate with it to become a centre used for the prediction of weather patterns and the gathering of information that would make farmers plan better.

“We will work with the centre to become one of the centres of excellence in technology,” he said.

“We will also support youths to develop their business ideas into reality with our 20,000-dollar grant on `Agri Pitch’ and `Agri Hacking’.”

Adesina commended Sagir Adamu-Abbas, the vice-chancellor of Bayero University, and Jibrin Mohammed-Jibrin, director of CDA, for assisting farmers with access to technology in the face of climate change.

In his remarks, Mohammed-Jibrin said the CDA is renowned for its research and teaching in development initiatives, focusing on dry land agriculture.

“The centre is dedicated to improving livelihoods, resilience and sustainable use of natural resources in African drylands through training and demand-driven research,” he said.

He said the CDA had received several World Bank grants for research and had so far enrolled about 1,153 doctorate and masters’ degree students and trained farmers in agro-ecological practices.

CDA is a World Bank-supported centre established to serve as a regional training hub for the West and Central African sub-regions.

OIL THEFT: NUJ CONFERS MERITORIOUS INTERNAL SECURITY AWARD ON TOMPOLO

0

••• AS TSSL CHAIRMAN RESTATES DETERMINATION TO FIGHT OIL THEFT

The Nigeria Union of Journalists has conferred its Internal Security Meritorious Award on the Chairman of Tantita Security Services, High Chief Government Ekpemupolo alias Tompolo.

The national President of the NUJ, Chief Chris Isiguzo, said that the award was in recognition of the sterling contribution of Tompolo and his firm, TSSL, to the critical campaign against crude oil theft in the country.

Recently, Tantita Security Services Limited working alongside the Navy, the Police, the NSCDC, and others has, intensified the campaign against the theft of the nation’s oil resources arresting and ensuring the forfeiture of vessels used in committing the crime.

Isiguzo led the national leadership of the NUJ to confer the award on Tompolo in Oporoza, Gbaramatu Kingdom, Delta State on Saturday.

He stressed that the country would have been in some trouble without the patriotic efforts of Tompolo.

Isiguzo said that this was the first time the NUJ in its history would be conveying the Internal Security Meritorious Award of the union on anybody.

The NUJ leader explained further that the Internal Security Meritorious Award was the only award approved during its National Security Conference in Abuja and it was given to Tompolo.

He said, “Somebody has risen to the occasion and gathered an array of young men who have taken it upon themselves to help this country continue to survive as a peaceful nation, united and continuing to fend for its people.

“And that is the man that has, to a very large extent, substantially, helped us address the issue of crude oil theft.

“That is one thing that has occupied our national life over time. By his commitment, dedication and diligence, Nigeria, as a country, has to a very large extent, reduced the activities of men of the underworld who have consistently engaged in pilfering, taking our common patrimony for their personal gains.

“The NUJ, having assessed the activities of TSSNL, has decided that we must accord the necessary recognition to the man who carries the flag, birthed this security organization, who has exceptionally distinguished himself.

“The NUJ has come to the Oporoza Community in Gbaramatu Kingdom to honour a distinguished son of the Niger Delta; a general in his own right who has distinguished himself, ensures and maintains an appreciable level of internal security.

“We have come to confer on him, the Internal Security Meritorious Award of the Nigeria Union of Journalists.

“In the course of the national security conference, held in Abuja, only one award had been approved and it is conferred on Dr. Government Ekpemupolo.

“I’m also excited that I’m doing this after 61 years of the existence of the NUJ, this award is coming up at this time.

“It is not just an honour to Tompolo but also an honour to me too. It is an honour to all of us and what that means is that the issue of insecurity is not just the responsibility of government but of every Nigerian.

“When you provide information, and intelligence to security operatives and agencies, you have contributed in some measures to reducing the problem of insecurity in the land.

“So, it is a collective responsibility, and all hands must be on deck to ensure we address our problems.

“If Nigeria is peaceful, every part of the country, including your household, will be peaceful and that will give birth to development and progress.

He recalled that the Union’s National Security Conference meant to examine the worsening security situation in the country was attended by former Inspector General of Police, and Chairman Chairman of the Police Service Commission, Dr. Solomon Arase, the Minister of the FCT, Nyesom Wike, and a diverse segment of Nigerians.

Isiguzo said that a position paper of the conference on the issue of security will be transmitted to President Bola Tinubu.

In his reaction, the Chairman of Tantita Security Services Limited, Chief Government Ekpemupolo restated his promise to end the criminal theft of the nation’s crude oil resources in the Niger Delta region.

He stressed that the country was in serious need of concerted support to stop the activities of those sabotaging the economy for personal gains.

The NUJ President had in his entourage, the National Secretary of NUJ, Shuaibu Leman and Delta state NUJ Chairman, Churchill Oyowe and others.
