PM Russia Will Not Attack NATO But F-16s Will Be Shot Down In Ukraine, Putin Says

Russia has no designs on any NATO country and will not attack Poland, the Baltic states or the Czech Republic but if the West supplies F-16 fighters to Ukraine then they will be shot down by Russian forces, President Vladimir Putin said late Wednesday.

Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 has triggered the deepest crisis in Russia’s relations with the West since the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis.

Speaking to Russian air force pilots, Putin said the U.S.-led military alliance had expanded eastwards towards Russia since the 1991 fall of the Soviet Union but that Moscow had no plans to attack a NATO state.

We have no aggressive intentions towards these states,” Putin said, according to a Kremlin transcript released on Thursday.

The idea that we will attack some other country Poland, the Baltic States, and the Czechs are also being scared — is complete nonsense. It’s just drivel.”

The Kremlin, which accuses the U.S. of fighting against Russia by supporting Ukraine with money, weapons and intelligence, says relations with Washington have probably never been worse.

Asked about F-16 fighters which the West has promised to send to Ukraine, Putin said such aircraft would not change the situation in Ukraine.

“If they supply F-16s, and they are talking about this and are apparently training pilots, this will not change the situation on the battlefield,” Putin said.

“And we will destroy the aircraft just as we destroy today tanks, armoured vehicles and other equipment, including multiple rocket launchers.”

Putin said that F-16 could also carry nuclear weapons.

“Of course, if they will be used from airfields in third countries, they become for us legitimate targets, wherever they might be located,” Putin said.

Putin’s remarks followed comments earlier in the day by Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba that the aircraft should arrive in Ukraine in the coming months.

Ukraine, now more than two years into a full-fledged war against Russia, has sought F-16s for many months.

Belgium, Denmark, Norway and the Netherlands are among countries which have pledged to donate F-16s. A coalition of countries has promised to help train Ukrainian pilots in their use.

PRESS STATEMENT

FG DECLARES FRIDAY 29TH MARCH, MONDAY 1ST APRIL 2024 PUBLIC HOLIDAYS TO MARK EASTER CELEBRATION.

The Federal Government has declared Friday, 29th March and Monday, 1st April 2024 as public holidays to mark the 2024 Good Friday and Easter Monday respectively.

The Honourable Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, who made the declaration on behalf of the Federal Government urged Christians and all Nigerians in general to emulate the sacrifice and love displayed by Jesus Christ in dying for the redemption of man.
According to the Minister, Easter, beyond religious significance, promotes values of love, forgiveness and compassion which are essential for social cohesion and harmony.  He calls on Christians to imbibe these virtues as they are capable of impacting positively on the socio-economic development in Nigeria by fostering unity, reducing conflicts and encouraging cooperation among Nigerians.
He further urged Nigerians to show acts of charity and generosity to help alleviate the material conditions of the less privileged amongst them.  This, he said, is in tandem with the Renewed Hope Agenda of Mr. President.

While wishing Christians at home and abroad a happy and blissful Easter celebration, the Minister also called on Nigerians to join hands with President Tinubu led Administration in its determination to bring sustainable development and usher in prosperity to all.

Tinubu To Vet Foreign Affairs Ministry’s Ambassadorial List

0

Months after receiving the names of some ambassadorial nominees, President Bola Tinubu has yet to draw up a consolidated list of diplomats who will serve as Nigeria’s envoys to various countries and multilateral organisations, The PUNCH reports.

This is as the Ministry of Foreign Affairs says it has since collated and forwarded the names of prospective diplomats to the President for consideration.

We have collated everything on our part and forwarded it to Mr. President,” the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, confirmed to our correspondent before Monday’s Federal Executive Council meeting.

However, the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Mr Bayo Onanuga, confirmed to our correspondent that such nominations must pass through a thorough process before a final list is released. He debunked a list making the rounds, describing it as “fake news.”

There is no official list as of today. There is a list in circulation. That is fake news. The foreign affairs list will still go through certain processes before it is released.

“Don’t forget that the ambassadorial list has two components. There are career ambassadors and political ambassadors. So, whichever one they submitted, it will still go through a long process.”

In November 2023, a senior official in the ministry said “Names of new ambassadors are being compiled.”

Although it was not clear if the nominees were political or career diplomats, feelers indicate that they primarily comprise the latter.

It is believed that while career diplomats are determined by their career progression, as recommended by the foreign service, political diplomats are often appointees of the President.

In December 2023, a high-ranking official in the nation’s foreign service, who spoke anonymously to The PUNCH, confirmed to our correspondent that one of those considered for the top diplomatic jobs is the Founder of Guaranty Trust Bank Plc. Mr. Afolabi Adeola.

Adeola will be designated Nigeria’s Ambassador to one of the world’s top three economies.

The source stated, “Yes, the President has a list of recommended persons and is considering it already.

“One of those I saw is Fola Adeola, the Founder of GTB.

“He is being considered as the Nigerian Ambassador to one of the world’s top three economies.”

Aside from Adeola, The PUNCH, on Tuesday, gathered that a Senior Special Assistant to the President, a former Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Olufemi Pedro, and the Speaker, Katsina House of Assembly, Tasiu Maigari, are also being considered for ambassadorial jobs.

Explaining the rationale for the choice, the source noted that the Tinubu administration was keen on deploying technocrats and captains of industry as its front persons in foreign lands.

“The President is reserving many of the slots for technocrats, people who have built a strong reputation in their respective fields and have built companies employing thousands of Nigerians. We need people who can use their influence to secure deals and partnerships for the benefit of their country.

“It is not a new thing. When choosing envoys, the most developed economies send their best hands for those jobs. And Tinubu is following that path.

“For example, Adeola is an investor and is not a strange face on the foreign scene and the global business community. He knows them and they know him. And he is not the only one. You can see that this speaks of the administration’s pursuit of more Foreign Direct Investment,” said the source.

On the process followed in compiling the nominees, sources told our correspondent that the Federal Government had set up a committee to recommend qualified individuals to fill the roles.

A source, who did not want to be named, said, “A committee was set up to make recommendations for career and political ambassadors.

“You see, most of the career ambassadors already know they are next for appointments. But they don’t know to which country they will be sent. There are countries where Nigeria has delicate political interests. For these ones, the government usually sends political ambassadors.

“If you remember, President Buhari appointed his former service chiefs as ambassadors to some African countries.”

Nigeria has 109 missions, 76 embassies, 22 high commissions and 11 consulates globally.

On September 2, 2023, President Bola Tinubu recalled all career and non-career ambassadors operating the country’s diplomatic missions, embassies and consulates globally.

A statement by Nigeria’s Foreign Affairs Ministry confirmed the recall of the ambassadors, saying: “Sequel to the inquiries on the letter recalling the Nigerian ambassador to the UK, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, has clarified that all career ambassadors and non-career ambassadors have been recalled on the instructions of President Bola Tinubu.”

The envoys were directed to return to the country on or before October 31.

They include the 41 non-career ambassadors and 42 career ambassadors appointed by Former President Muhammadu Buhari in July 2020.

The diplomats were deployed after the Senate confirmed them by Section 171(2)(1c) and Subsection 4 of the 1999 Constitution.

An explainer by Buhari’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, noted that only 25 career ambassadors who had attained the retirement age and had been in public service for 35 years were recalled.

Dollar Not Selling At ₦1,000/$1 – BDCs Debunk Viral Post

0

Contrary to the report making the rounds on social media, Bureau De Change operators said there was no truth in reports that the dollar is now selling at N1,000 at parallel market.

There have been rending reports on social media that dollar is now selling at N1,000 in Abuja.

The post read, “This morning, at Zone 4 Abuja, along the Sheraton Hotel, the dollar is selling at N1,000 – $1. Abdulsalam BDC is selling N900 if buying over $5,000.

“There’s a mad rush to dispose of dollars at Zone 4. The dollar in the parallel market is presently selling at a lower price than the official market.”

However, our correspondent reached out to “Abdusallam BDC” (Abubakar Abdusallam) on Wednesday in Abuja, and he denied selling FX at the quoted price.

“Dollar is selling at N1300/$1, not N1000 or N900,” he said.

Recently, the Central Bank of Nigeria offered to sell $10,000 to each BDC operator at N1,251/$.

The apex bank expects them not to sell above N1,269/$, representing a margin of N18.

A social media user, whose real name could not be ascertained, also debunked the rumour, stating that he was at the location (Sheraton Hotel Zone 4) and there was no such transaction.

“I was at Zone 4 this morning, and there was nothing like that. This is fake news,” he said.

The President of the Bureau De Change Association of Nigeria, Aminu Gwadabe, could not be reached for statement as of the time of filing this report.

NLC Rejects Abure’s Re-election As LP National Chairman

0

The Nigeria Labour Congress has rejected the re-election of Julius Abure as Labour party’s national chairman vowing not to accord him any form of recognition.

Abure was returned as the party national chairman at a national convention of the party held in Nnewi, Anambra State, on Wednesday.

The convention also saw all members of the National Working Committee return.

The slots for representatives of both the NLC and the Trade Union Congress were, however, left vacant.

NLC spokesman, Benson Upah, while reacting to the news, vowed that the congress will never back the party under Abure’s leadership.

While describing the convention as a charade, Upah told our reporter that the return of the national chairman was a nullity as far as the NLC is concerned.

He said, “It’s an illegality, a nullity. The whole exercise was a charade! Nothing can legitimise such brazen impunity.”

Bayo Onanuga Takes Dig At Buhari Over Treatment Of Fallen Soldiers

0

A presidential spokesperson said Wednesday that President Bola Tinubu will attend the national burial for the Nigerian military officers and soldiers killed on 14 March by armed persons in Okuama Community in Delta State.

Bayo Onanuga, Mr Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Strategic Communication, did not, however, limit his post on X to announcing the president’s intention, he also took a dig at Mr Tinubu’s predecessor, Muhammadu Buhari, for not attending the funerals of soldiers slain on duty.

“It is the first time in the last ten years that a Nigerian President will attend such a solemn event, in honour of our men of gallantry and valour,” Mr Onanuga wrote.

Two other burials in 2018 and 2021 were not graced by the incumbent president, Mr Onanuga wrote.

Mr Buhari was the Nigerian president between 2015 and 2023.

In November 2018, Boko Haram terrorists killed several Nigerian soldiers in different attacks on the Nigerian Army 157 Task Force Battalion in Borno state. Then the former chief of army staff Ibrahim Attahiru, a lieutenant general, and 10 other officers were also killed in an ill-fated military plane crash. Former President Buhari did not attend the burials on both occasions.

Mr Onanuga added in his post, “We told you then that President Tinubu cares. He is demonstrating it yet again.”

The post has since stirred controversy on X (formerly Twitter) with many Nigerians criticising Mr Onanuga for playing politics and having zero respect for the families of the slain soldiers.

“It’s disgraceful to exploit the deaths and funerals of military personnel for petty political attacks against other parties,” an X user Ben Samuel said in reply to Mr Onanuga’s tweet.

“Why not simply state that the president is attending the final farewell of the fallen heroes and end with a period,” he said.

Another user, Lannister Aspiration, said: “The last paragraph was not entirely necessary. It is acceptable for the president to express sympathy for the fallen soldiers, but attempting to politicise every action of the President, including attending a burial site of the fallen soldiers, is not in line with Bola Tinubu’s style.”

“Everything you said after the first full stop, is not necessary at all, are we celebrating the president’s presence at a funeral venue now, whether the President attend is not what is needed, talks should be about arresting the assailants and how living military officers won’t face the same issue,” said Wilex Williams, another user.

After the public outrage, Mr Onanuga edited the first version of the tweet, removing the section where he referred to the incidents in 2018 and 2021.

“It is confirmed that President Bola Tinubu will be attending the national burial for the Nigerian military officers and soldiers killed on 14 March by some gunmen in Okuama Community in Delta State. It is the first time in the last ten years that a Nigerian President will attend such a solemn event, in honour of our men of gallantry and valor. We told you then that @officialABAT cares. He is demonstrating it yet again,” the new version of the post reads.

Mr Onanuga has been a close ally of Mr Tinubu for decades and was a spokesperson for the president during his campaign. Mr Tinubu appointed him as his adviser on Information and Strategy last October.

Mr Onanuga’s slight dig at ex-President Buhari appears to reflect the relationship between the former president’s core supporters and those of the incumbent. The supporters have sometimes publicly criticised each other’s principal on social media despite belonging to the same party.

Although both men are members of the ruling party, APC, Messrs Buhari and Tinubu have had a topsy-turvy relationship amidst suspicions that Mr Buhari tried to stop Mr Tinubu from succeeding him.

Although Mr Tinubu has reversed some of Mr Buhari’s policies and accused some top officials of the Buhari administration of corruption, he has repeatedly praised Mr Buhari and refused to publicly criticise him since Mr Tinubu assumed office as president.

Dangote Refinery To Accelerate European Trade Decline

0

Europe has been exporting refined gas to Africa, including Nigeria, for the past decade.

In the last decade they’ve earned approximately $200 BILLION exporting gas to Africa.

Today, that lucrative trade they’ve enjoyed is being seriously threatened, with massive job losses and company shutdowns envisaged in Europe.

Who is responsible for this alarming situation in Europe?

The massive DANGOTE OIL REFINERY in Lagos, Nigeria.

Nigeria’s Dangote Oil Refinery Could Accelerate European Sector’s Decline

By Ahmad Ghaddar and Robert Harvey

Reuters

March 27, 2024

LONDON, March 27 (Reuters) – Nigeria’s giant Dangote oil refinery could bring to an end a decades-long gasoline trade from Europe to Africa worth $17 billion a year, heaping pressure on European refineries already at risk of closure from heightened competition, analysts and traders said.

The refinery started production in January and cost $20 billion to build. It can refine up to 650,000 barrels per day (bpd) and will be the largest in Africa and Europe when it reaches full capacity this or next year.

Dangote Refinery, Lagos

It has long been touted as the turning point for Nigeria’s quest for energy independence. Nigeria is Africa’s most populous nation and its top oil producer, yet it imports almost all its fuel due to lack of refining capacity.

About a third of Europe’s 1.33 million bpd average gasoline exports in 2023 went to West Africa, a bigger chunk than any other region, with the majority of those exports ending up in Nigeria, Kpler data shows.

“The loss of the West African market will be problematic for a small set of refineries that do not have the kit to upgrade their gasoline to European and U.S. specification,” consultancy FGE’s head of refined products Eugene Lindell said, referring to more stringent environmental standards for other markets.

As much as 300-400,000 bpd of refining capacity in Europe is at risk of closure because of rising global gasoline production, according to Kpler’s analyst Andon Pavlov.

A European refinery executive who declined to be identified said coastal refineries that are geared for exports will be more exposed while inland refineries are less vulnerable because they rely on local demand.

“The changes won’t happen overnight, but they could ultimately lead to closures of refineries and their conversion to storage terminals,” he added, referring to the challenging market environment.

SHRINKING SECTOR

Around 30 European refineries have shut down since 2009, data from refining industry body Concawe show, with nearly 90 plants of various sizes and complexities still in operation.

Closures have been brought on by competition with newer and more complex plants in the Middle East and Asia and more recently because of the impact of the [‘covid pandemic’].

…European refineries don’t produce enough diesel to meet regional needs but produce too much gasoline and rely on exports to clear excess supply.

West Africa has long been the main outlet for gasoline that doesn’t meet stricter environmental restrictions in Europe on sulphur and metals content…

That trade accounted for $17 billion in 2023, according to price data from Argus Media and Reuters calculations.

The Dangote refinery, funded by Africa’s richest man Aliko Dangote, was configured to produce as much as 53 million litres of gasoline a day, about 300,000 bpd…..

Earning ₦200K Monthly In Nigeria Is Better Than £2000 In UK – Allen Onyema

Anybody earning N200K monthly in Nigeria is better than someone that is earning £2000 in the UK – Air Peace boss, Allen Onyeoma (video)

Allen Onyeoma, the CEO of Air Peace, has said that those who earn two hundred thousand Naira monthly in Nigeria are better off than those earning two thousand pounds in the United Kingdom.

He said this while appearing as a guest on TVC.

Speaking to the host about the economic crisis and strength of the Naira, Onyema said he agrees that the bulk of the issue is “artificial”.

He added: “Go to London, if you earn two thousand pounds a month in London, you’re a pauper. What two thousand pounds can afford you is like two thousand Naira.”

He continued: “The person earning two hundred thousand Naira in Nigeria is better.”

Onyema added that with earnings of 200,000, a Nigerian can afford a maid, a driver and other domestic staff.

He said he believes completely that the Naira has more value than is being projected when compared to other foreign currencies.

He added that Nigerians should stop demonetising the country.
