Naira Crash Makes Lagos, Abuja Cheapest Cities For Expatriates

0

Nigeria’s commercial hub, Lagos, and the capital city, Abuja, have been identified as the cheapest cities globally for expatriates to live in, according to the 2024 Mercer Cost of Living Survey released on Monday. The depreciation of the naira has significantly reduced the cost of living for international workers in these cities.

Naira’s decline began last year after President Bola Tinubu implemented a cocktail of reforms, abandoning the long-standing currency peg established by former Central Bank Governor, Godwin Emefiele, which had kept the naira artificially high.

On Saturday, inflation reached 33.95 per cent, driven primarily by rising prices of food and non-alcoholic beverages, which accounted for 17.59 per cent of the increase. Housing, water, electricity, gas, and other fuels contributed 5.68 per cent, while clothing and footwear, transport, and household furnishings added 2.60 per cent, 2.21 per cent, and 1.71 per cent respectively.

The Mercer survey highlighted that Lagos and Abuja experienced the most substantial drops in cost of living rankings among 226 global cities between 2023 and 2024. Last year, Lagos was ranked the 47th most expensive city, and Abuja was 140th.

In the latest survey, Lagos plummeted 173 spots to 225th, with Abuja just behind at 226th. The report noted that currency devaluations were a major factor in these declines.

Despite the reduced cost of living for expatriates due to currency devaluation, inflation has risen significantly in many of these countries. Between March 2023 and March 2024, Nigeria and Angola both saw inflation rates soar above 20 per cent.

Among the 10 most expensive cities for international workers, half are in Western Europe, with Switzerland hosting four. However, Southeast Asian cities dominate the top positions, with Hong Kong and Singapore ranked first and second respectively.

IPMAN: Dangote Could Crash Fuel Price To ₦‎515

0

The Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN) has said that, when fully operational, Dangote refinery could crash the pump price of fuel to between N515 and N550 depending on the location. IPMAN Public Relations Officer, Chinedu Ukadike, in an interview with New Telegraph yesterday, said the marketers were expecting that the refinery would sell petrol between N480 and N500, adding that once that happens, oil marketers would sell at a pump price of between N515 and N550 depending on the location.

He also said the refinery would break fuel importation monopoly by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company of Nigeria. Ukadike said: “We are happy. We congratulate Dangote. What he has done in diesel, is good enough because since he came in, diesel has remained within the benchmark of N1,000 and N1,100. “So that has helped marketers and transporters to be able to move their petroleum products and reduce unnecessary expenses and costs.

“Diesel was almost N1,600 until Dangote announced its price to N1,200 and later N900 per litre, it will give marketers a sense of belonging and enhance competition in terms of the distribution in the down stream chain. “Definitely there will be a reduction in petrol price. We are anticipating and optimistic that Dangote will give us petrol at the price regime of around N480 and N500 and once that is done, we are good to go. Once that is done, we could sell between N515 and N550 depending on the location.”

He added: “Independent marketers are delighted because this is the end of monopoly in the distribution of PMS in Nigeria. The monopoly of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, (NNPC Ltd) as a sole importer will once be challenged and the after deregulation or removal of subsidy will be practiced in Nigeria because once there is monopoly through regulation.

Employee Compensation Act Does not Exclude Right of Action in Negligence- Industrial Court Rules

Awards N30 Million Against Firm

The National Industrial Court has held that Employee Compensation Act 2010, the current law dealing with compensation for work-related injury claims, does not exclude the right of action in negligence for industrial injury claims.

The decision was handed down by the Presiding Judge of Owerri Judicial Division of the Court, Hon. Justice Nelson Ogbuanya, while delivering Judgment in the suit filed by Anthony Utibe against his erstwhile employer, Jiuxng Intergrity Industries Ltd, over the permanent disability injury he sustained at work.

The Court awarded the sum of N30,000,000.00 (Thirty Million Naira) in favour of Anthony Utibe, as compensation by way of general damages, arising from the company’s breach of duty of care which resulted in permanent damage of the functionality of his right hand, coupled with acts of unfair labour practice in the ill-treatment meted to him, culminating in his exit from Construction Company upon sustaining the injury in the industrial accident, and the sum of N1, 000,000.00(One Million Naira) as cost of action.

From facts, the Claimant- Anthony Utibe who worked as a Mason with Jiuxng Intergrity Industries Ltd Construction had submitted that he got injured while at work. After all medication and surgery, a final medical report confirmed that he had sustained permanent disability on his right hand and he was quickly laid off by the company which refused to pay him any compensation, and he sued under the common law principle of negligence.

In defense, the Defendant- Jiuxng Intergrity Industries Ltd Construction had through its counsel contended that the company other than bearing the medical expenses and costs associated with the treatment, is no longer liable to pay any amount to the Claimant, and if there is any more liability, it should be made under the Employee Compensation Act.

The Construction Company further maintained the position that Anthony Utibe’s right of action lies only under the ECA, and also set up a defence of contributory negligence, and urged the Court to dismiss the case.

After a careful evaluation of evidence and pleadings of the parties, Justice Ogbuanya, in a well-considered Judgment, resolved the issue in favour of Anthony Utibe and held that the legal route for seeking compensation for workplace injury is not only available under the Employee Compensation Act (ECA), but also by way of general damages in action founded on common law principle of negligence, as in the instant suit.

His Lordship pointed that “a cursory review of the current legal regime for injury claim arising from industrial accident since the enactment of Employees’ Compensation Act (ECA) 2010, has presented two optional but mutually exclusive routes to receiving remedy of compensation for injury sustained at work or workplace– (1) the statutory route through ECA and (2) through the common law principle of negligence”.

Justice Ogbuanya further stated that “the established ‘principle of election’ set up under the ECA, is to the effect that a victim of workplace injury is enjoined to elect which of the two routes (statutory or common law), to take in the search for remedy to compensate for the resulting incapacitation, with the consequence, that once a decision is made, there is no going back”.

On the substantive suit, Justice Ogbuanya, while holding that bearing the cost of medical treatment does not, ipso jure, relieve the employer from making payment for compensation of the victim-employee or even to his/her dependent in case of injury resulting in death, found the construction company liable in negligence for breach of duty of care owed to the Claimant, noting that “appropriate Health, Safety & Environment (HSE) safety protocols indicating safety measures in place at the construction site, were lacking in the Defendant’s organization, as the Defendant failed to lay any evidence in support of its bare averments on the alleged non-adherence to ‘proper safety protocol’ by the Claimant”.

According to the Judge “it is impressed upon the Court that the Defendant’s liability ends with its bearing of the cost of various medical treatments on the Claimant’s injury, without minding the impact of the resulting incapacitation of the Claimant’s right hand for his livelihood and future endeavours, which is where the issue of compensation comes in, as bearing cost of treatment does not, ipso jure, relieve the Defendant employer from making payment for compensation of the victim employee or even to his/her dependent in case of injury resulting in death. Both common law principle of negligence and statutory remedy under the ECA are in tandem with this rule”.

On the whole, the Court, using ‘annuity-format’ measure of the quantum of damages awardable, and after considering the issue of unfair labour practice arising from the manner the Claimant was laid off after sustaining the permanent injury in the course of duty for the Defendant company,  awarded the sum of N30,000,000.00 (Thirty Million Naira) against the Defendant in favour of the Claimant, as compensation by way of general damages.

The vigilante members arrived at the scene in the compound and descended on the young man, requesting him to provide the missing phone. The witness said several people pleaded with them but they insisted that he must provide the phone before they leave him.

The persistent beating continued until they realised that the situation had gone out of their control, so they stopped. Narrating further, he said after a while they noticed that the motionless body of the deceased became cold and stiff, they immediately carried him to the office of the security group, Anioma Security Watch Network, at 17 Gbenoba Str, Agbor, where the aggrieved mob started damaging the patrol Hilux.

A quick intervention of the Nigerian Police Force and the Military calmed the situation as some police officers and military personnel were seen talking with the relation of the deceased, thereafter the lifeless body of the young man was taken in a police van in the company of relatives and friends to mortuary at Agbor Central Hospital. A few hours after the tragic incident, the said Nokia torchlight phone was found with the woman’s son who went to pick it up.

The woman’s son claimed he didn’t want to interrupt the sleep of the young man when he entered his room to collect it, hence he took the phone and left. In an interview, the deceased father said he pleaded with the woman to allow them to replace the phone but all his pleas fell on deaf ears.

“I pleaded with the woman to allow us to replace her phone but she insisted it must be that her particular one or she’ll make that call,” the grieving father said.

Stop Storing Cooked Food In Refrigerator Over Three Days – NAFDAC Warn Nigerians

0

Moji Adeyeye, Director General of the National Agency for Food and Administration and Control, has urged Nigerians to refrain from storing cooked food in the refrigerator for more than three days.

Adeyeye warned that cooked food stored in the refrigerator for days is susceptible to contamination by disease-causing pathogens, key agents of foodborne diseases that can lead to death.

She made this known in a statement on Tuesday signed by Sayo Akintola, the agency’s Resident Media Consultant, News360 Nigeria gathered

Adeyeye, who said this in commemoration of the 2024 World Food Safety Day with the theme, ‘Food Safety: Prepare for the Unexpected’, urged stakeholders in the food supply chain to take deliberate actions to institute a food safety culture in their operations to mitigate food hazards and risks that could compromise food safety.

The World Food Safety Day celebrated annually on June 7 was established by the United Nations General Assembly task force in 2018 to raise awareness and encourage efforts to prevent, detect and address public health risks linked to unsafe food.

The statement partly read, “She however, urged Nigerians to refrain from storing cooked food in the refrigerator for more than three days, warning that cooked food stored in the refrigerator for days is susceptible to contamination by disease-causing pathogens, key agents of foodborne diseases that can lead to death.”

Adeyeye remarked that food safety is not only important for public health but a sine qua non for economic development and food security.

She noted that food safety is a collective responsibility, adding that everyone from producers to consumers needs to play their part to ensure food safety.

According to her, the campaign aims to promote global food safety awareness to strengthen efforts of preventing, detecting, and managing foodborne risks globally by highlighting the importance of being prepared for food safety incidents.

“Let us all stay true to the statements ‘food safety is everyone’s business’ and ‘food safety is a shared responsibility’ as we celebrate this year’s World Food Safety Day. Working together, we will continue to strengthen our food safety system, ensuring its resilience, robustness, and preparedness for the unexpected,” she said.

According to the World Health Organisation, an estimated 600 million – almost one in 10 people in the world – fall ill after eating contaminated food, and 420,000 die every year, resulting in the loss of 33 million healthy life years.

WHO said $110bn is lost yearly in productivity and medical expenses resulting from unsafe food in low- and middle-income countries.

Also, the Director of Food Safety and Applied Nutrition, Mrs Eva Edwards, alerted that foodborne diseases are expensive, yet they are preventable.

Edwards emphasised the significance of food as a necessity for human life, stressing that it can also be a source of harm if not handled properly.

She stated that food safety emergency response must be anchored on a multisectoral, collaborative, integrated one-health approach across the health, agriculture, and environment sectors, the tiers of government including relevant external partners and non-governmental organisations.

‘’Let’s all play our part in promoting the culture of good hygiene practices in our homes, communities, and food establishments. Together we can ensure a safer and healthier food supply for everyone,” she noted

Obi Visits Chef Grace Nwaokobia (Guinness World Record) To Cheer Her Up

0

In consonance with my commitment to encouraging our young people towards entrepreneurship and expertise, I showed up this morning to cheer on Chef Grace Nwaokobia @chefgraceggk as she made us proud by breaking the Guinness World Record for the longest home kitchen cooking marathon by an individual. The old record stood at 68 hours and 30 minutes. By the time I arrived at about 6:40 am, she had already broken the record and extended it to 86 hours and counting.

Interestingly, the food cooked has largely gone to charity. I gathered that on Saturday, the food made was supplied to The Little Saints Orphanage in Ilupeju, in line with Chef Grace’s dedication to charity.

Let’s create a supportive environment in Nigeria that empowers young people to be productive, unlocking their entrepreneurial potential. By doing so, we can build a new Nigeria which is now very possible! -PO
