Nigeria’s women’s national basketball team captain, Sarah Ogoke, has gotten her first job as a medical doctor after graduating from the New York College of Podiatric Medicine. The D’Tigress captain got the job just a few weeks after her father died of cancer.

Sarah Chikaodinaka “Cheeks” Ogoke is a member of the Nigerian female national basketball team called D’Tigress. She is a 4-time Afrobasket champion with D’Tigress, winning the title in 2017, 2019, 2021 and 2023. She also played at the 2018 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup.

Sarah has played for Southern Polytechnic State University and the University of Pittsburgh in the United States, First Bank Basketball Club of Lagos (the best female basketball club in Nigeria and one of the best in Africa), Deepwater Basketball Club (also in Nigeria), Celta Vigo in Spain, Primeiro Agosto in Angola and Ferroviário of Mozambique with whom she won the FIBA African Women’s Champions Cup in 2019.

Sarah Ogoke was born in New York in 1990. Her father, Bentley Ogoke, is a medical doctor and her mother Edith Okure-Ogoke is a nurse. She is following in her parents’ footsteps and she has a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology/Premedicine from the Southern Polytechnic State University, Mariett, Georgia. She is studying at the New York College Of Podiatric Medicine to become a podiatrician (foot/ankle doctor).

She divides her time between Nigeria, the United States and Mozambique. She has worked as a volunteer clinician at the JonBon Hospital in Imo State and has been involved in many training camps for youth in many parts of Nigeria.
