It was gathered that the policemen mounted roadblock on the expressway doing stopand- search operations when the gunmen struck.
The gunmen, who attempted to gain access to the premises of the Ezillo Police Division, were, however, repelled by the officers on duty.

The corpses of the slain policemen were said to have been deposited at a mortuary in Abakaliki after they were confirmed dead by doctors.
When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Loveth Odah, confirmed the attack but did not give details of the casualty, adding that reinforcement had been drafted to the area. She assured that the command would give details of the attack.
