In a swift and stern response to former Governor Nyesom Wike’s recent remarks, the Ijaw Youth Council, led by Dr Theophilus Alaye has defended the integrity of Ijaw youths and condemned the derogatory label of “thugs.”
Dr Alaye represented by his Spokesman, Bedford Berefa stated this during an interview last week in response to Governor Wike’s comments that insinuated negative perceptions of the Ijaw Youth Council, painting them with a broad brush of criminality. The council however asserts that such characterizations are baseless and misguided.
“It is regrettable that a former governor would resort to name-calling rather than engage in constructive dialogue. We respect you as a national figure and we are proud of your antecidence. However, we are not comfortable with your antics to oust a sitting governor that was collectively elected by the Rivers people”
The Council’s Spokesman noted that it is unacceptable to give ethnic colouration to the rousing repelling voices against the unfortunate ploy to remove a vibrant and efficient governor for no just cause.
Berefa pointed out that the Ijaw Youth Council has a long history of advocating for the rights and well-being of the Niger Delta adding that the IYC has consistently championed causes that promote unity, development and social justice.
The Spokesman acknowledges peculiar challenges facing the region. Therefore, he emphasized the need for peaceful and inclusive solutions to political misunderstandings.
“Nevertheless, the former governor should stop using threats and unguided statements just to stay relevant in the Rivers state political space. What is governance if the governor is not in charge of the political structure” Berefa added.
“We understand the complexities of the political landscape in Rivers State. It is imperative that we come together, put aside our differences and prioritize the welfare of our citizens void of ethnicities” .
The Ijaw Youth Council further expressed their commitment to play roles for fostering a conducive environment for progress and development in the Niger Delta, highlighting the importance of collaboration between government officials, community leaders, and youth organizations.
As the situation unfolds, many are hopeful that this exchange of perspectives will lead to a constructive dialogue and pave the way for a more harmonious political climate in the region.
The IYC called for open dialogue and urged all stakeholders to work together in finding lasting resolutions.
