Despite the challenges thrown up by the ethnoreligious gang-up during the election process, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, has been declared winner of Nigeria’s 2023 presidential election.
Tinubu, a southern Muslim who contested on a Muslim-Muslim ticket with Kashim Shettima as his running mate, was declared winner of the election in the wee hours of Wednesday by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
In the result officially announced by the country’s electoral commission chief, Prof. Mahmud Yakubu, Tinubu scored a total of 8,794,726 votes to upset Peter Obi’s Christian, Igbo-dominated Labour Party, who scored 6,101,533 votes to clinch third position.
Muslim News gathered that Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, another Muslim from the north, who contested under the leading opposition People’s Democratic Party, PDP, scored 6,984,520 to emerge second, while the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) candidate, Dr. Rabiu Kwankwaso, also a Muslim from the north, came a distant fourth with 1,496,687.
Declaring the results, the INEC chairman, said: “I, Professor Mahmud Yakubu, hereby certify that I am the returning officer for the 2023 general election. The election was contested.
“That Tinubu Bola Ahmed of the APC, having certified the requirements of the law, is hereby declared the winner and is returned elected.”
The INEC chairman added that the issuance of the certificate of return to Tinubu will take place at 3pm on Wednesday.
“It’s my turn actually!” An elated Bola Tinubu enthused an hour after he was declared the President-elect of Nigeria by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Wednesday morning.
“I am profoundly humbled to serve as the 16th President of our beloved country. This is a shining moment in the life of any man and an affirmation of our democratic existence,” he added.
The former Lagos State Governor thanked all those who participated in the February 25 election with particular mention of ‘Atikulated’, ‘Obidients’, ‘Batified’ and ‘Kwankwasiyya’ supporters.
“I take this opportunity to appeal to my fellow contestants to let us team up. It is the only nation we have. It is one country and we must build it together,” he said.
