The Governor of Kaduna State, Nasir El-Rufai has argued that zoning in political parties would not solve the economic problems currently rocking the country.
El-Rufai who spoke during a plenary session at the National Economic Summit on Tuesday held that the solution was to give everyone an equal opportunity.
“Zoning in political parties cannot solve the economic problems we are facing. Selecting the best person to get the job done will benefit everyone.
“The best we can do is to give everyone an equal opportunity,” he said.
It will be recalled that zoning had become a major topic of discussion in the political space.
In a recent development, the governor of Ebonyi State Dave Umahi dumped the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for All Progressives Congress.
Giving reasons for his defection, the Ebonyi state governor said that PDP had been unfair to the South Eastern region.
While the constitution does not make provision for zoning of political leadership positions, political parties often zone offices and ‘to allow fairness with regions and ethnic groups’z
As South Eastern groups are of the opinion that it is their turn to mount the helm of leadership, El-Rufai believes that everyone should be given a fair chance at leadership.
