UNILAG Governing Council Confirms Ogunsola Acting VC

The Governing Council of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) has approved the appointment of Professor Folasade Ogunsola as the acting Vice-Chancellor of the institution.

The council led by John Momoh, its acting Chairman, approved her nomination at a virtual meeting on Tuesday.

Ogunsola was elected as acting Vice-Chancellor after she secured 135 of 167 votes, thereby polling the highest number of votes in the election held by members of the UNILAG Senate on Monday.

The election was held after the Federal Government had on Friday asked Wale Babalakin, the university’s Pro-Chancellor; and Professor Oluwatoyin Ogundipe, the ousted Vice-Chancellor, to step aside from official duties following the leadership crisis in the institution recently

The Ministry of Education had in a statement in Friday announced that President Muhammadu Buhari had approved the setting up of a special visitation panel to address the crisis and also asked the institution’s Senate to nominate an acting Vice-Chancellor.

Ogunsola, a professor of medical microbiology, becomes the first female to occupy such a position in the institution’s 58th-year history.

She was the provost of College of Medicine, University of Lagos, and the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Development Services at the UNILAG before her emergence as acting Vice-Chancellor.
