Surgeon Admiral AB Afolayan Rtd has been appointed as the New Managing Director/ Chief Executive Officer of Defence Health Maintenance Limited DHML, a cooperate entity owned by the Ministry of Defence and the Nigerian Armed Forces as a Health Maintenance Organisation (HMO).
It was established in response to the challenges of providing access to quality health care services for all eligible military personnel (serving and retired) and their families.
DHML brings together the health resources of the Nigerian Army, the Nigerian Navy and the Nigerian Air Force. It complements these with a network of civilian healthcare providers and professionals, to provide better access to quality healthcare services.
Surgeon Rear Admiral Azeez Bayo Afolayan (Rtd) is a distinguished Consultant paediatrician with over 30 years’ experience in the practice of Military Medicine and Health Administration.
He had a Degree in Medicine and Surgery from the University of Ibadan in 1979. In 1995 became a fellow of the West African College of Surgeons specializing in Paediatrics.
During his service in the Nigerian Navy, he was awarded the General Service Star, Forces Service Star, Meritorious Service Star and the Defence Service Star.
Surgeon Rear Admiral Azeez Bayo Afolayan (Rtd) served in different capacities both afloat and ashore in the course of the career in the Navy. He served twice as the Director of Medical Services, Naval Headquarters Abuja from 2009-2012 and 2014-2015, also served as Director Medical Administration and Logistics, Defence Headquarters, Abuja (2012-2014).
He was the Secretary-General of the Pan African Committee of Military Medicine (2004-2005) and later served as the Director-General of the 39th World Congress of Military Medicine (2011-2012).
The retired Surgeon Rear Admiral also represented the Nigerian Armed Forces on the Board of the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (2004-2005). He is a member of Nigeria Medical Association, Paediatrics Association of Nigeria and FCAI.
Surgeon Rear Admiral Azeez Bayo Afolayan (Rtd) would be bringing his wealth of experience to bear in the smooth running of the Defence Health Maintenance Limited as the third Managing Director/ Chief Executive Officer.
