FG To Begin Disbursement Of Free Meters To Target Location In Nigeria

The Federal Government of Nigeria has begun its plans on delivering free meters to 30 million Nigerian consumers, the plan which is targeted to blanket Kaduna, Eko and Ikeja franchise areas is to for commencement today, Friday, October 30, 2020. Sources from the presidency has disclosed that the reason for the disbursement of the free metering was to put an end to the recurring complaints of estimated billings in the electricity sector.

More information from presidential sources also disclosed that the locations to receive meters are Bawo Road, Kano metropolis (KEDCO), Tudun Wada in Kaduna (Kaduna Electric), (Ikeja Electric), Oshodi Business District in Ikeja, Surulere (Eko Disco District) and Yaba (Eko DISCO). State Government representatives have also been assigned according to monitor the disbursement of the free meter in the specified locations across Nigeria.

As disclosed by Presidential sources “NMMP is to roll out six million meters for all connections points on grid without meters over the next 18 to 24 months, estimating to impact 30 million consumers nationwide.

“Following Mr. President’s directive on mass metering, the Central Bank of Nigeria, on October 18th, approved guidelines for funding the mass metering programme which entailed that all meters under the scheme will be locally sourced, creating thousands of manufacturing jobs through lead manufacturers such as MOMAS, MOJEC and others.”

The Presidential source also stated, “the launch of the NMMP will be part of a continuous effort where all DisCos will go from location to location across the country with their respective Meter Asset Providers to install meters for all Nigerians.”

The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Laolu Akande confirmed the story, saying that more details will be revealed as the distribution progresses across the country.

He further added that current efforts by the Federal Government on improving power supply and mass metering was in line with some of the agreements recently agreed on by the FG and Organized Labour.
